Are you hoping to recruit Yagoro in Assassin's Creed Shadows? This fella also happens to be a ninja-in-training, though he tends to be more of a sloppy shinobi than a stealthy expert. Our guide has all the details that you need to have him join your League. Do take note that this article contains minor spoilers.
How to recruit Yagoro in Assassin's Creed Shadows
To be fair, the process to recruit Yagoro happens fairly late in the campaign. It involves completing various personal quests, as well as defeating Yagoro himself as part of a mission called Blade in the Dark.
Note: In terms of main quest progression, we were able to recruit Yagoro well before we eliminated all 12 Shinbakufu targets. However, we're unable to confirm if there's an exact number of bosses that you need to take out before certain quests appear.
Prerequisites to meeting Yagoro
In our playthrough, we had completed the following personal quests prior to meeting Yagoro:
- Yasuke's personal quests: Lady of Whispers, An Education, and Lords of Azuchi.
- Naoe's personal quests: Before the Fall and Wolves and Foxes.
- Old Kofun: Secrets of the Blade - This requires you to investigate the Old Kofun in Izumi Settsu to gain access to the Assassin Brotherhood's chambers. It's also where you'll acquire the Apprentice Assassin armor set. You can learn more about this part in our Secrets of the Blade/Apprentice Assassin guide.
A Blade in the Dark: Quest start and Yagoro's location
Now, it's time to recruit Yagoro in Assassin's Creed Shadows. First, you'll want to head to the Engyoji area in the Harima region. If you've already tackled the Genzaburo's Soldiers quest, then you've likely explored a bit of the region already. Here's what you need to do:
- From Himeji Castle, keep going north-northwest until you reach the Engyoji sub-region.
- There's a small landmark here called Maniden Hall. As you approach this place, the quest marker for A Blade in the Dark should appear.
- Investigate the corpse of the soldier who was recently slain. Naoe remarks that the culprit is using a Hidden Blade similar to hers.
How to track down and defeat Yagoro
Follow the bloody trail up the sloping path until you reach Hideoyshi Camp. This place is crawling with soldiers, all of whom are on high alert because their comrades are being ripped apart by an unknown assailant. Try to sneak around without getting spotted until you're close enough to the western wall.
If you look at the large tree just beyond, you should see a ninja perched on one of the branches. As soon as you approach, the ninja will run away, so you have to give chase.
Once you catch up at Mitsunodo Hall, the unknown shinobi will challenge you to a fight. Beware because he has some blindingly fast maneuvers, as well as thrown kunais and smoke bombs. If you manage to drop him down to 50% of his health, he should surrender and introduce himself as Yagoro.
The samurai target and Yagoro's perks
Yagoro wants to bring justice by defeating the oppressors. He then asks you to slay the samurai target in the nearby yard. Once the deed is done, you can have a chat with Yagoro. Respond with the following:
- "It is a symbol."
- "To serve others."
Congratulations! You've made an ally of Yagoro in Assassin's Creed Shadows. You can now make use of his quirks in battle:
- Ability: Assassinate - Yagoro kills an enemy with three or fewer health chunks.
- Passive 1: Chain Assassination - Yagoro kills an extra enemy.
- Passive 2: One with Death - Kill enemies with up to five health chunks.
As you can see, Yagoro is the perfect companion for a stealthy slayer like Naoe. Since he can also quickly eliminate foes, you should be able to clear enemy bases in no time. Don't forget that there are several recruitable allies/companions in the game, as well as romance options.
