Avengers Endgame In Theaters Again: 13 Things To Watch For The Second Time Through

Avengers: Endgame is back in theaters ahead of its just-announced home release date. But there's more to re-watching Avengers: Endgame than simply keeping an eye out for brand new footage. Check out our recommendations below.

With Avengers Endgame being re-released in theaters--with the promise of some new footage, to boot--now is the perfect time to revisit the heartache, pain, confusion, and triumph that Endgame is.

For many Avengers fans, this will be your first Endgame re-watch since the movie originally hit theaters back in April. In some ways, not much has changed since then. But you'll still be going into Endgame with fresh eyes, and you never know what you might catch the second (or third, or beyond) time around.

Here are 13 things to look out for the next time you watch Avengers Endgame.

Here at GameSpot, we spent an unhealthy amount of time thinking about, debating, and describing Endgame's confusing time travel. Should we go with Bruce Banner's explanation, or the Ancient One's? Do changes in the past create multiple branching timelines, or do they change the future of your current timeline? What does the Avengers' time machine actually do? Why did they need a Quantum Tunnel at all? Repeated viewings only enhanced our befuddlement, but maybe you'll catch something the next time around that we missed.

In some of their many post-release interviews, Avengers Endgame writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus and directors Joe and Anthony Russo couldn't seem to agree on exactly how the movie's time travel works. The writers said they don't quite buy the multiple timelines theory, while the directors stated the opposite. How can the writers and directors disagree on something this fundamental? Maybe it will make more sense the next time we watch the movie.

When the gang heads to New Asgard to retrieve Thor, the setting appears pretty much like a normal coastal village. But when Valkyrie and the Asgardian forces appear at the movie's final battle, she's riding a Pegasus. Where did it come from? Maybe there's a clue hidden in the New Asgard scenes that we haven't noticed. Watch out for any big signs that say "Pegasus stable this way."

In case you didn't quite catch it the first time around--and we can't blame you, the cameo lasted about half a second--Endgame introduced the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first openly gay character, during the support group scene with Captain America. And that character was played by none other than co-director Joe Russo (which definitely doesn't make up for the fact that he was otherwise never given a name, but in this case, it's what we got).

Endgame is absolutely filled with Easter eggs and references to other MCU movies, the comics, and beyond. But this one is extra subtle--so subtle, in fact, that many viewers likely missed it the first time around. The ballet slippers glimpsed in one of Nat's early scenes as she works from the Avengers Compound are a nod to her training as a ballet dancer--as well as an assassin--in the comics.

You might have missed some of these the first time around, so keep your ears open for all of Tony's colorful nicknames for Thor. The best is probably when Tony casually calls the God of Thunder "Lebowski."

The same as above, but "Thumbelina" is probably the highlight here.

Here's one that may hint at the MCU's future. At one point, Nebula mentions that Vormir--the creepy planet that houses the Soul Stone--is a "dominion of death" at the "center of Celestial space." That may be our first nod at the future Eternals movie.

There are a bunch of Endgame cameos you might not have noticed the first time through, most notably--besides the above mentioned Joe Russo bit--two stars from Community: Yvette Nicole Brown during Tony and Steve's trip to 1970, and Ken Jeong as the security guard at Scott's storage facility (who doesn't even get a line).

As the movie's climactic battle commences, Doctor Strange and his sorcerers open portals to multiple other locations, and friendly forces pour through to aid the Avengers. Some of these portals go to known locations, like Wakanda. Others, though, are more puzzling. These are definitely worth a closer look when you watch again.

One of the best jokes in Endgame is a reference to a previous MCU movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, where Peter's new suit (courtesy Tony Stark) asked him if he wanted to activate "instant kill mode." It's a burp-and-you-miss-it moment in Endgame's final battle, but Peter finally gives the mode a try, and it's awesome.

During Tony Stark's funeral scene, there was one character present who had many viewers scratching their heads. That character turned out to be an older version of the kid from Iron Man 3, who less dedicated MCU viewers probably forgot about. When you watch Endgame again, you'll probably appreciate the reference better now that you actually know who that is, and it no longer seems like there's a random teenager present at Iron Man's wake.

The Russos confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that, prior to Bucky and Steve's conversation just before the latter hopped back in time (permanently), Bucky had somehow already found out about Steve's plan to live in the past. How or when or why will likely never be explained--you're definitely just supposed to intuit this based on his "I'm going to miss you," line, one of Sebastian Stan's only lines in the movie, but if we're lucky, there may be more clues about this offscreen twist that we missed the first time through Endgame.
