    Where we droppin'?

Today, battle royale games seem omnipresent--from mega-franchises born from the free-for-all format to the limited-time modes that pop up in established non-BR titles. Believe it or not, however, the battle royale game genre is less than a decade old; in the early months of 2016, this new type of multiplayer experience first burst onto the gaming scene. 100 players, all dropped onto an island with nothing but the clothes on their backs, must explore the island and find weapons, armor, and whatever else they can scrounge up in order to become the last one standing.

Below is the fruit of battle royale's labors: 14 games that have taken this new and exciting format and run with it. There are names you have certainly heard of on this list, like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone, while others may have fallen under your radar and deserve a look. Despite being so new, battle royale games have offered plenty of incredible gaming experiences, and these 14 are the best of the best to play in 2025. If you just want something to play with friends, check out our picks for the best co-op games and best cross-platform games.

    Fortnite

    • Developer: Epic Games
    • Release Date: July 21, 2017
    • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, Android

While Fortnite wasn't the first battle royale game to make a splash--that one's coming up shortly--Epic Games's decision to pivot a tower-defense game to battle royale was a seminal moment for the entire gaming industry. What started as a simple 100-person battle royale has grown into a platform of its own, with names like Lego, Disney, and more partnering up to take advantage of its popularity. It also doesn't hurt that the core battle royale experience is a ton of fun, both with and without Fortnite's trademark building mechanics.

    Call Of Duty: Warzone

    Call Of Duty: Warzone

    • Developer: Activision
    • Release Date: March 10, 2020
    • Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC

It was only a matter of time before the most popular first-person-shooter game in the world got in on the battle royale action, and after a test run of sorts via Black Ops IV's Blackout mode, Call of Duty did just that with Warzone. Taking the CoD FPS formula and dropping it into the battle royale format was a natural fit, and Warzone quickly became the most popular way to play CoD throughout the year.

    PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

    • Developer: Krafton
    • Release Date: March 23, 2017
    • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, iOS, Android

The game that launched a thousand battle royales, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds--or PUBG--was the first of its kind to gain significant traction in the video game space. Its gameplay loop was easy to learn but hard to master, and the map was filled with things to find and enemies to battle. While Fortnite may have overshadowed it a bit, PUBG has carved a nice slice of the battle royale pie for itself, especially if you consider both of the mobile versions, PUBG Mobile and PUBG: New State. For some, the first is the best, and PUBG isn't going anywhere any time soon.

    Apex Legends

    Apex Legends

    • Developer: Respawn Entertainment
    • Release Date: February 4, 2019
    • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, Android

Each of the battle royale games on this list so far leans on fully customizable characters that, otherwise, act in-game exactly the same as every other character. Respawn Entertainment decided to go a different route, instead creating a battle royale where players chose specific characters with specific abilities--more akin to a hero shooter like Overwatch. Mix that with the mobility mechanics of Respawn's other FPS, Titanfall, and the result is one of the best battle royale games on the market.

    Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

    • Developer: Mediatonic
    • Release Date: August 4, 2020
    • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mobile

Not all battle royale games are about running and gunning; sometimes, the contest involves running, jumping, and trying to make your cute little bean friend fall off the side of a platform. Mediatonic's 2020 smash hit captured the hearts of many a COVID-quarantined gamer thanks to its lighthearted gameplay and adorable characters, who can be dressed up in all sorts of silly costumes before every run. Fall Guys is great for nights where you just want to laugh for a while, and it's all thanks to those cute lil' beans.

    Naraka: Bladepoint

    • Developer: 24 Entertainment
    • Release Date: August 11, 2021
    • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC

The majority of battle royale games have focused on firearms, explosives, and other modern weaponry. Naraka: Bladepoint asks, "What if we do battle royale, but with swords, daggers, and crossbows?" The result is an incredibly fun spin on the genre, with the heavy melee focus creating intense battles throughout the 60-player matches. There are some firearms, like a musket and a pistol, but those will only get you so far in Naraka; either you learn the way of the sword, or you lose.

    Garena Free Fire

    Garena Free Fire

    • Developer: Garena
    • Release Date: December 4, 2017
    • Platforms: iOS, Android

While Fortnite and PUBG were battling it out over the console battle royale scene, another developer was staking its claim in the mobile sector, and now it's become one of the biggest games in the world regardless of platform. Garena Free Fire follows the classic battle royale format, but it does so right in the palm of your hand through your phone or tablet, and as such, it's become a sensation across the entire world. If you've played Fortnite and PUBG and want to try something different, look no further than your phone.

    Super Animal Royale

    Super Animal Royale

    • Developer: Pixel Studio
    • Release Date: August 26, 2021
    • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PC

Super Animal Royale takes the battle royale format and applies the law of the jungle--and by that, we mean you control animals in the jungle and blast away with all sorts of guns, bombs, and other weapons. Tigers, foxes, panda bears, and more are the character choices in this top-down survival shooter, where 64 wild animals drop in and battle until there's only one left standing. Super Animal Royale trends to the sillier side of battle royale games, but it's still one of the best on offer today.

    • Release Date: November 20, 2024
    • Platforms: PC

The newest addition to the best battle royale games list, Supervive is technically still in open beta as of this writing. However, it has quickly become one of the fastest-rising battle royale games in terms of popularity, thanks to its mixture of battle royale, MOBA, and hero-shooter mechanics. Teams of three can choose from over 18 different heroes, then drop into a massive arena and wage war until one team is left. As the game is in its beta stage, there's only more to come, so if you're looking for something new in your battle royale, Supervive may be the answer.

    CRSED: Cuisine Royale

    CRSED: Cuisine Royale

    • Developer: Darkflow Studio
    • Release Date: December 12, 2019
    • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Android

Previously known as CRSED: FOAD, Cuisine Royale comes from a small Latvian studio called Darkflow. On the surface, it looks like a typical battle royale with realistic weaponry, but there's more than meets the eye here; not only can you dress your characters up in ridiculous outfits using everyday objects, but there are also a few supernatural elements that will keep your opponents guessing. You might run into an enemy with a powerful shotgun, but if you can summon zombies to distract them while you go in for the kill, there's nothing to worry about. That's CRSED: Cuisine Royale in a nutshell, and it's a good time.

    Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt

    Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt

    • Developer: Sharkmob
    • Release Date: April 27, 2022
    • Platforms: PlayStation 5, PC

Speaking of the supernatural, Vampire: The Masquerade seems like an odd choice for a battle royale game, but Sharkmob absolutely makes it work in Bloodhunt. Players can customize their vampire character, join a sect, and take to the streets of Prague to hunt and destroy other players. Once in a while though, you'll need to feed, and if you can locate a human on the battlefield, you can grab a bite while also temporarily enhancing your abilities. Sharkmob has announced that no more updates are coming to the game, but the servers are staying on for the foreseeable future, so get in and have a taste of what Bloodhunt has to offer.

    • Release Date: February 13, 2019
    • Platforms: Nintendo Switch

A battle royale … with Tetris? That's what Arika brought to the Nintendo Switch in 2019, and Tetris 99 is still going strong today thanks to its super-simple premise: Play Tetris, sabotage other players by clearing lines, and be the last one going when all is said and done. Tetris is one of the oldest and most beloved games ever made, which means anyone can pick up and play Tetris 99--so long as they know they'll have to worry about 98 other players trying to mess with them the entire time.

    • Developer: Konami
    • Release Date: September 12, 2023
    • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch

Super Bomberman R 2's Battle mode, like Tetris, takes a classic game and molds into a battle royale format. Here, up to 64 players are thrown into a massive labyrinth of classic Bomberman-style challenge rooms, each connected by a doorway. As more players are eliminated, the labyrinth will shrink until the final group are in one room--and then it's all out bomber mayhem. This is a neat mode that flew under the radar when it launched in 2023, and it's worth going back and giving it a shot now.
