AFK Journey, like its predecessor AFK Arena, has dozens of characters right from the game’s launch. With so many characters to choose from, it can be intimidating and overwhelming to figure out which characters to invest in for the long run.
This guide will cover the 10 best characters currently in AFK Journey and why each one is worth investing in and upgrading. Just because some characters are obtained already at a higher rank, such as Epic, does not guarantee they are better than Elite characters. Some characters starting at the Elite rank will soar much higher than characters starting at the Epic rank when both are upgraded to their final rank of Supreme+.
Check out our list and reasonings below for the best characters in AFK Journey.
Vala, Phantom of Oakenfall
Vala was the first character under a banner with the game’s launch and she is an absolute powerhouse. A Lightbearer Rogue who is able to swap between long-range attacks and close combat with her Ultimate to both evade and deal massive damage to pick off enemies individually. Marking an enemy at the start of the match allows Vala to focus all her attacks on that enemy while draining the energy of the marked target and getting her to Supreme+ will have her deal an additional 10% damage on marked targets. Her Hero Focus allows her to increase her attack speed each time she scores the final blow on an enemy allowing her to–a lot of the time–get five kills on non-summonable enemies. Unlocking her EX Weapon further extends her assassination strengths, since killing an enemy will grant her Haste, increased movement speed, and become only targettable to allies until all allies die. If Vala is on your team, you will definitely hear her victory quote often since she is amazing at swiftly taking down the enemy team–sometimes even by herself.
Rowan, The Roamer
Rowan is a familiar face for many players from AFK Arena. An entrepreneurial child who is known for selling items, wares, and goods all over, with his trusty aix, Bradduck. Where Rowan shines in combat as a Lightbearer Support is not just with his healing potions he can throw to allies below 50% health or Bradduck that can deal damage to enemies, but Rowan’s Ultimate throws coins on the ground that increases the energy of allies in rapid succession. His Ultimate allows allies to quickly gain their own Ultimates throughout a match and use theirs more often with the help of Rowan’s Fatal Greed. Rowan’s EX Weapon adds a super potion to his stall, which when used grants increased physical and magical defense. Rowan’s use of his stall and his aix will allow your team composition to receive healing, damage enemies, and increase their defense, while allies set off Ultimate after Ultimate. Rowan is a perfect partner with Vala, so she can continually use her Ultimate to zip around the area, and equipping the Starshard Spell for the team allows the team’s damage per second to reach new heights.
Thoran, Fallen King
Thoran is the best tank in the game hands down. Where Thoran differs from other tanks is not just soaking up damage or crowd-control skills, but when Thoran dies the first time in a match–he resurrects with 40% of his health. Most of the time, you can have Thoran be the solo tank on your team composition due to his resurrection skill. When this resurrection is not triggered, Thoran will increase his energy recovery faster with attacks and skills. Soul Retaliation is Thoran’s Ultimate, with Thoran charging his blade, taking the damage from enemies, and unleashing a large area slash that heals him. Thoran’s EX Weapon has him making a pact with an ally and this pact will allow Thoran to take half of the damage for the ally, but when dead, the ally will heal Thoran. Thoran can soak up damage, deal it back with his Ultimate, heal himself, and redirect damage to himself by protecting allies. The best tank in the game.
Odie, Desert Defender
Odie’s strengths lie in being farther away from enemies at a maximum distance to shoot his blow darts and inflict poison. Corrosive Dart allows Odie to inflict an unremovable poison status onto an enemy that deals damage per second until the target dies, and when the target does die, Odie gains energy to use the Ultimate again. Odie is a squishy Mauler Ranger but can ramp up damage throughout a match due to his poisonous skills as long as he stays alive and is protected by others. Odie is excellent in the late-game stages, Dream Realms, and PVP modes due to his Hero Focus granting additional speed. By reaching Mystic+, this rank allows Odie to instantly kill enemies falling below a certain threshold. Odie is an Elite Hero, so you can easily pull for him; but more importantly is also available in the Dream Store, so you can purchase up to 15 copies of Odie in the game’s first month to upgrade him to his higher ranks with ease.
Cecia, Requiem of Thorns
Cecia is a Ranger, but unlike Odie, she is of the Graveborn. Cecia does pretty good damage per second on her own, but where she shines is with her Ultimate: Queen’s Summons. An Eldritch abomination, Mr. Carlyle, will be summoned to stun, claw, and inflict crowd control effects on enemies. When Mr. Carlyle is on the field, this increases his and Cecia’s attack speed and gives them defense penetration. Even having Cecia at lower ranks, she, alongside Mr. Carlyle, can create devastation for the enemy team; especially since Cecia can summon him more than once in a match, making Cecia teaming up with Rowan to allow constant summons, interruptions, and damage from Mr. Carlyle. More copies of Cecia can be purchased from the Arena Store, so it is best to grab two copies before the store refreshes.
Hewynn, Tender Leaf
Hewynn is a Support Hero from the Wilder race. This quiet and meek water sprite can heal the entire area unlike Rowan who needs to be near allies to heal, Hewynn can heal allies that dive forward into the enemy lines. Hewynn is all about healing. Healing. Healing. Healing. There is not much else she really brings to the team and even though it does take some time to build up her Ultimate to heal all allies, she excels at her job as a healer in the game as long as you have a team that can protect her. Hewynn’s EX Weapon unlocks Tranquility, which reduces the damage allies receive by 30%. This Wilder is incredible at keeping allies alive, mitigating damage received, and having her as the solo Support on a team composition lends to her strengths to heal allies both near and far.
Reinier, Symmetric Sin
Reinier is a Hypogean Support that uses rifts, dimensions, and portals to upend the enemy. Having a unit to pummel the opponent and attack the enemy with the highest health points ratio allows Reinier to target the most troublesome enemies. Reinier’s Ultimate: Mutual Reflection will teleport the user and target to another dimension for 10 seconds. This may seem unfortunate, but most of the time this takes away an enemy support, damage dealer, or even a tank; so the rest of your team composition can deal with one less enemy for the time being. Having even a sole copy of Reinier without upgrades still makes this Hero extraordinary and is an exemplary Support to cause continuous disarray to the enemy team.
Scarlita, Herald of Compassion
Scarlita is a Celestial Warrior who starts the match high in the sky, granting allies shields, increasing her energy, and charging up her attack stats for 15 seconds before diving into the enemy to stun them upon landing. Scarlita works best with a team that can stay alive since her skill Divine Wrath will have her inflict true damage to enemies so long as allies are alive. On the higher levels of Divine Wrath, Scarlita will knock out low-health enemies outside the battlefield to defeat them. Divine Quake is Scarlita’s Ultimate, which follows a string of combos by dealing damage, knocking enemies to the end of the battlefield, charging, and stunning them as the finisher. Scarlita is adept in her role as a Warrior due to her Valkyrie Spirit shielding, dealing true damage to enemies based on the number of allies alive, and increasing allies' magic alongside physical defense, when reaching the rank of Supreme+.
Smoky & Meerky, Wasteland Apothecary
Smoky & Meerky is a Mauler Support that, at the start of the match creates an aroma recovering energy per second, healing the team, and granting haste from their Ultimate Special Aroma. The longer the aroma continues without interruption, the more significant support they provide allies. With Energizing Formula, Smokey & Meerky also increase allies in the area of the aroma’s attack by 10% with additional energy gain. This duo continually raises and supports their team as long as allies stay within the aroma, while also keeping all allies alive at a much faster rate than Hewynn. Due to Scarlita needing allies alive to deal true damage, Smokey & Meerky work extremely well with the Celestial Warrior for team compositions.
Koko, Wild Child
Koko is a Mauler Support who heals, reduces damage allies receive, grants life drain, and increases attack. Riding on her close friend, Patto, Koko can throw spears at the enemy and when a target is hit with a spear, the target will receive 10% additional damage from allies for the next five seconds. If Koko is next to enemies, then Patto will smash the area to stun allies making Koko great by interrupting enemy Ultimates or stopping Rogues like Silvina or Vala. When unlocked, Koko’s EX Weapon will grant all allies a shield that can absorb up to 15% damage. Koko is a Support Hero that is much tankier than others such as Rowan or Hewynn. She is able to protect allies and stun enemies that come near–with Patto–to then heal the lowest ally including increasing attack damage. A Hero that is skillful in longer fights with a tanky team composition.
Even though these are the best characters in the game, this does not include others such as Eironn, Korin, Carolina, Damian, and Arden, to name a few. Eironn and Korin are both excellent characters to upgrade and invest in, but they take far too long to become viable for team compositions since they only become astounding when their EX Weapons are unlocked.
Rather than hoping for and investing in characters that peak extremely early or peak extremely late--having you use an immense amount of materials--it is best to obtain, upgrade, and invest in the 10 best characters we have thoroughly listed above.
