Are you getting headaches because of the Laboratory Puzzle in Blue Prince? All the clues for this brain teaser can be found inside the room itself. However, you need to gain access to another area, one with a special requirement in relation to the Lab, before you can complete your objective.
How to solve the Laboratory Puzzle in Blue Prince
The Laboratory Puzzle is solved by powering up the machinery and pulling the correct levers. The clues themselves are found in the periodic table of elements/diagrams in the room. We'll get into all those details in a bit. For now, let's talk about why the Lab itself is an important fixture of the manor.
Laboratory Experiments
The main reason why you always want to have access to the Laboratory in Blue Prince is because of the experiments. When you interact with the computer terminal, just choose the Experimental House Features to see a list of (a) causes/triggers and (b) effects that can be combined.
For instance, there are triggers where you need to draft "archived" rooms or rooms that cost +2 gems. Others require you to unlock a certain number of trunks/chests, bypass security doors, or even dig trash from dirt piles.
Choosing a particular trigger, combined with an effect, can yield to amazing results. For example, let's say you have this combination:
- Cause: "Each time you find some trash while digging"
- Effect: "Gain +1 to your allowance"
If you have a Shovel and you're finding a ton of junk from dirt piles, then your trash will still be your treasure due to the boosts to the amount of gold that you start with.
Laboratory Puzzle clue - The Periodic Table of Elements
If you want to solve the Blue Prince Laboratory Puzzles on your own, then your first task is to look at the two periodic tables in the room itself.
- One of these has the letters/abbreviations of each element written down as is.
- The other, meanwhile, has blank boxes with a few that have numbers written on them.
The idea is to look at the numbers as a sequence, and then find the letters of the elements that correspond to those spots. For instance:
- 1: Pu
- 2: S
- 3: H
Eventually, you'll learn that the hidden message is: Push Three After Nine.
How to power up the Laboratory in Blue Prince
If you look at the machine in the Laboratory, you'll notice that it can't be activated yet. A note also says that you need steam power, and that only comes from the Boiler Room.
To be clear, the Boiler Room does appear frequently in manor runs, but you can't just place it anywhere. Instead, you have to place it so that it's connected via ducts/shafts leading back to the Laboratory. Here's how:
- Regardless of whether you drafted the Boiler Room or Laboratory earlier, make sure that both have an available opening/doorway.
- If you get lucky and you're able to draft them adjacent and connected to each other, then that's great.
- If not, you can connect them by drafting unblocked passageways through gear-type rooms or red rooms:
- Gear-type rooms - These include both the Laboratory and Boiler Room, as well as the Workshop, Security, and others. Check your room directory to see rooms with the gear icon.
- Red rooms - These include options with passageways, like the Gymnasium and Chapel. The Dark Room, Archives, and Weight Room also work, but they're a lot riskier to plop down due to their effects.
You know you did it right if you look up at the ceiling and there's an unbroken connection of ducts/shafts that connect multiple rooms together. Once you've done this, just activate the Boiler Room by making sure that steam powers up the device at the top. Then, push the activation switch to see the Boiler Room light up. You can also adjust the dial toward the left, center, or right depending on the path you've made back to the Laboratory.
Alternate method: The Electric Eel Aquarium
If you can't get the Boiler Room to appear, then there's another method. It involves the Aquarium, albeit one that has a perk from an Upgrade Disk. The perk that you need to select is the one that enhances the Aquarium to have Electric Eels. This causes the Aquarium to act like an activated Boiler Room right from the get-go.
Again, if the Aquarium's door connects to either of the Laboratory's entrances, then you should be fine. If not, then you still need to draft connecting rooms--i.e. gear rooms or red rooms--toward the Laboratory's entrances.
Laboratory Puzzle reward
Well, you've done that hard part. If the Laboratory machine is powered up, all that's left is to do the following:
- Push Lever 9 up.
- Push Lever 3 up.
Congratulations! You've completed the Laboratory Puzzle in Blue Prince. This triggers a cutscene which shows a that new location has been unlocked outdoors. It's called Blackbridge Grotto. Here are a few additional tidbits:
- Blackbridge Grotto's permanent perk allows you to remotely access one offline terminal per day. An offline terminal refers to a computer in a room that you haven't visited yet during that particular run. For instance, if you reach the Security room early, you can quickly hack into the Laboratory computer--even if you haven't drafted the Lab yet--to activate an experiment.
- If you visit Blackbridge Grotto, you can pick up a rather curious-looking item, a Microchip. Naturally, if this piques your curiosity, then you might want to look for the other Microchip locations as well. (Spoilers abound, of course!)
- There are other permanent upgrades that you can acquire in your playthrough. These include the perks from the Garage Door, Breaker Box, and Campsite Gate.
