How To Gain More Steps In Blue Prince

Do you want to gain more steps in Blue Prince? Think of steps as akin to health in other roguelike games. Once your health bar is fully depleted, you have to start another run. The same concept rings true in Blue Prince and, because items and rooms are randomized each day, having more steps allows you to discover more areas and secrets of the manor.

How to gain more steps in Blue Prince

By default, you have 50 steps at the start of each run. Each room that you enter causes you to lose steps--optimal room placements in the manor is important, since you don't want to waste so much time going from Point A to Point B.

You can replenish or gain more steps each day through the following means:

    • Entering bedrooms
    • Eating food scattered around the house
    • Eating a scrumptious meal in the Dining Room
    • Buying or acquiring certain items
    • Entering the sauna
    • Making use of lab experiments
    • Unlocking the Apple Orchard

    Gaining steps from bedrooms

    Gaining steps from bedrooms

Bedrooms, which are categorized as purple rooms, offer decent benefits for those who want to gain more steps in Blue Prince. The most important of these is the Nursery, which grants +8 steps whenever you draft a bedroom in the house. Here are a few others:

    • Bedroom: +2 steps whenever you enter this room.
    • Guest Bedroom: +10 steps.
    • Bunk Room: This room counts as two bedrooms.
    • Her Ladyship's Chamber: +10 steps the next time you enter a Boudoir; +3 gems the next time you enter a Walk-In Closet.
    • Nursery: +8 steps whenever you draft a bedroom.
    • Dormitory: Each time you draft an architect-type room--i.e. has a compass icon--you gain +10 steps if you enter the Dormitory.
    • Master Bedroom: +1 step for each room (of any type) in your house.

The Master Bedroom is harder to get as a draft option in runs, since it requires you to be at the higher ranks/rows in the house. However, the Bunk Room is more common, and it's actually a great pick if you already have the Nursery, which we consider as one of the best rooms in the game. Assuming you draft a Nursery before the Bunk Room, then the Bunk Room's effect is counted twice, which means you gain +16 steps instead.

    Eating all sorts of food

    Eating all sorts of food

All sorts of fruits can be found scattered in various rooms, though they're more commonly seen in areas like the Pantry or Kitchen. You may also use the Shovel to dig dirt piles--perhaps you can find turnips that replenish your steps, too.

Likewise, if you can unlock the Secret Garden, then you're in for a treat. Aside from giving you a means of reaching the Antechamber, the Secret Garden also spreads food around the house, which means you're likely to see stuff that you can eat even in rooms that you've previously visited.

Deciding on when to eat dinner in the Dining Room

Deciding on when to eat dinner in the Dining Room

If you want to get a huge amount of steps, then look no further than the Dining Room. The Dining Room always has a meal, though you won't be able to eat it until you reach rank 8 in the manor--i.e. the second to last row from the top.

If you draft the Dining Room closer to the top, then you'll be able to devour the meal soon enough. If you draft it closer to the entrance, then you'll have to retrace your steps after you've reached row 8 in your run.

Items that affect the number of steps

Items that affect the number of steps

Several items affect the number of steps in Blue Prince. These can appear randomly in locations or you can purchase them from the Commissary in case they appear as part of the selection pool:

    • Salt Shaker: Grants +1 step whenever you eat food.
    • Sleep Mask: +5 steps whenever you enter a bedroom-type location for the first time.
    • Lunchbox: +10 steps when you reach row/rank 5 in the mansion for the first time.
    • Running Shoes: Can sometimes negate the depletion of steps when you run around the house.
    • Hall Pass: Prevents you from losing steps if you walk between two adjoining hallways. Hallways you draft from an adjoining hallway don't cost gems.
    Relaxing at the Sauna

    Relaxing at the Sauna

The Sauna only appears as a potential draft option once you've plopped down a Pool during your run. When you enter a Sauna, you're guaranteed to have +20 steps the next day. Think of this as a way to ensure that you have bonus steps as you prepare for your next run.

    Trying out Laboratory experiments

    Trying out Laboratory experiments

The terminal in the Laboratory allows you to try different experiments where you choose one cause and one effect. One of these effects sets the number of steps to 40 whenever you trigger a selected condition--i.e. whenever you find trash while digging or whenever you bypass security-locked doors.

Note that there's also a Laboratory Puzzle that you can complete. The reward allows you to access one offline terminal--assuming you already know the terminal password--to make use of its functions. For instance, if you have a Security room in your run but no Laboratory yet, you can still access the lab experiments via the Security room's computer. Moreover, once you've found all the Microchips, you can find more causes and effects to experiment with.

A permanent boost from the Apple Orchard

A permanent boost from the Apple Orchard

The Apple Orchard provides a permanent boost of +20 steps, which means you start each day with 70 steps already. That's a huge boon, especially for those who really want to head deeper into the manor. You can learn more about this in our Campsite Gate/Apple Orchard guide.

That does it for our guide on how to gain more steps in Blue Prince. We hope you're able to make the most out of each attempt as you delve into the mysteries of your estate.

A surreal adventure filled with wonders and mysteries await you in Blue Prince. If ever you feel stuck or lost at any point in time in your playthrough, don't forget to check our Blue Prince guides hub.
