Are you planning to sail on the Reservoir boat in Blue Prince? While you might think that this is a quaint activity that leads to a bit of sightseeing, it's actually a fairly convoluted task that requires visiting multiple locations. Don't worry, since we've got you covered with all the details. Just watch out because this article contains a few spoilers.
How to sail on the Reservoir boat in Blue Prince
The Reservoir is one of the most notable locations in the Underground zone. You can sail on the Reservoir boat by altering the water levels via the Pump Room. This is easier said than done because (a) you don't know what those water levels are, and (b) you still need to make changes in the Pump Room itself.
In any case, we've outlined our guide to mention the clues first, just in case you want to solve things on your own. After this section, we then talk about how to complete the objectives.
Note: This whole process requires a few visits to the Pump Room. Don't worry even if you don't have enough steps to make it back to the Reservoir from the Pump Room in one go. The configuration that you set it to will be retained across multiple days/runs until you make changes.
Reservoir water levels clue
If you want to ride the Reservoir boat in Blue Prince, then you might be interested in the clue that informs you about the water levels. This is found in the Underground just past the Red Door (activated via the Boiler Room).
In the Rotating Gear area, use the control mechanism so you can cross the gap in the upper section. There, look at the window pane to see the water levels. The most important ones are:
- Dock Level: +13
- Entry Level: +6
- Fully Drained: 0
Think of the Reservoir's water levels as akin to a math problem. If full, the Reservoir has 14 pips/levels (+14). We have to bring it down to Dock Level (+13) first, and then to Entry Level (+6).
Dock level: How to move the Reservoir boat to the other side
This is a fairly simple task, but you do need to have access to the Pump Room for this one. It's similar to what you did when you drained the Fountain, except you only need to drain one water level from the Reservoir assuming that it's full (+14):
- Look at the Pump Room control panel like a math equation. First, you need (a) Tank 2 to be empty, and (b) the Kitchen to be filled with water.
- Drain the water from the Kitchen using Tank 2. This means Tank 2 has one level remaining.
- Use the switch at the back so that it's set to Tank 2. Then, select the Reservoir and interact with the middle pump. This lets you partially drain the Reservoir (-1).
- This leaves the Reservoir at Entry Level (+13).
With this configuration, you must have to access to the Underground's western half, which is where the boat is initially docked. There are entry paths from the Fountain, Tomb, and Blue Flames Elevator. Chances are, you won't be able to go through the Fountain since it has water, which leaves the the Tomb and Blue Flames areas as your only options.
Once you're down below, interact with the boat in the Reservoir. This leads to a cutscene where Simon sails across the underground lake, bringing the boat over to the Foundation side of the cavern.
Entry level: The Boiler Room and Pump Room configuration to partially drain the Reservoir
The next step if you want to sail on the Reservoir boat in Blue Prince requires another visit to the Pump Room. This time, though, you need to set the Reservoir's water level to +6 (entry level).
For this process, you need to make sure that the Boiler Room is activated, and that it's connected to the Pump Room. A powered-up Pump Room lets you use the reserve tank:
- Either the doorways in the Boiler Room and Pump Room are connected directly, or you have an unbroken pathway via gear-type rooms with openings (i.e. Security) or red rooms (i.e. Archives, Gymnasium, and others).
- Alternatively, you can use an Aquarium with the Electric Eel upgrade, which acts akin to a pre-activated Boiler Room.
- You can learn more about these details in our Boiler Room guide.
Okay, then, let's get back on track. Let's say you already have the Pump Room powered up by the Boiler Room or Electric Eel Aquarium:
- Make sure the Reservoir is filled with water again (+14 level).
- Fill the other rooms with water and make sure both Tank 1 and Tank 2 are empty.
- You can use the reserve tank to fully drain Tank 1 several times.
- Switch back to the Reservoir and drain the water into Tank 1 and Tank 2 (-8 in total).
- This leaves the Reservoir at entry level (+6).
What's beyond the Reservoir?
With the above configuration, you should be able to sail on the Reservoir boat in Blue Prince. You should use the Foundation or the Basement entrance this time as that's the section where the boat is docked.
Then, go down the wooden steps and interact with the boat to trigger another cutscene. We don't want to spoil what happens next, but here's the gist:
- Take screenshots of every note, document, and map that you see in the next area. These give you hints related to other puzzles and mysteries in the game.
- Don't forget to pick up the Sanctum Key that's on the crate between the sofas.
Last but not least, this isn't the only Sanctum Key that you can find deep below the manor. There's also another one that can be yours if you fully drain the water.
