Check out all of the Super Mario Bros. Movie posters!
The animated Super Mario Bros. Movie comes out this April after a small delay, but from what fans have seen so far the movie looks like it will be well worth the wait. Nintendo and Illumination debuted the first full trailer back in November that gave fans their look at the Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser's island, and aspects of other Mario games like Mario Kart. Pratt's casting as Mario might have given some fans worries, but this will be undoubtedly pure Super Mario magic.
The upcoming movie will be the franchise's third film adaptation, following the Japanese anime film Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! from 1986, and the live-action film Super Mario Bros. starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo from 1993. The latter of caused hesitation from Nintendo to license its properties for decades.
Mario creator and video game icon Shigeru Miyamoto became interested in attempting to develop another film when Nintendo was bringing its older games to the Virtual Console service. He met with Illumination founder Chris Meledandri via Nintendo working on a Super Nintendo World as part of Universal Parks. From there, the two were discussing a Mario film and in January 2018, Nintendo announced that it would work with Illumination and Universal to produce it. Production was underway by 2020, and the cast was publicly announced in September 2021.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The Lego Movie), the film features an ensemble voice cast including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, the original voice of Mario Charles Martinet, and Kevin Michael Richardson. Check out the posters that have come out so far!
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is scheduled for release in the United States on April 7, 2023, and in Japan on April 28.
1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Here we have the first full poster and the whole gang is here. Mario, Luigi, Toad, Donkey Kong, and Bowser are on display, even with Magikoopa Kamek and what appears to be a Blue Shell Koopatroopa.
2. Chris Pratt as Mario
The mustached hero that started it all. We were first introduced to Mario back in Donkey Kong in 1981, but he was called Jumpman at the time. Mario's first installment was 1983's Mario Bros. along with his brother, Luigi, in an arcade hit before coming home to American families in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. In the upcoming film, he is voiced by Chris Pratt.
3. The Super Mario. Bros Movie Poster
This is a promotional poster that will be used for a lot of licensing material. Expect to see this image a lot when the movie premieres this April.
4. Charlie Day as Luigi
Luigi's solo poster featuring Mario's younger brother alongside a Dry Bones. From what we've seen, there's a lot of hinting that the spin-off series Luigi's Mansion is somehow involved in the movie, with Luigi having a lot of supernatural elements tied to his promotional material. For the film, Luigi is voiced by Charlie Day.
5. Anya-Taylor Joy as Princess Peach
Princess Peach shown front and center, with her Mushroom Kingdom behind her. Most of the Mushroom Kingdom imagery we've seen so far is mainly Grass Land, with Toads busying themselves throughout the city. Originally called Princess Toadstool until Super Mario Bros. 64 where she was rechristened Peach. She is voiced by Anya-Taylor Joy.
6. Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong
Mario's former rival and king of the jungle Donkey Kong has his own solo poster as well, sporting a redesigned face for the film. We know at some point in the movie, DK and Mario brawl it out in a Super Smash Bros.-style square-off. In the movie, DK is shown in his Donkey Kong Country attire, a monogrammed tie. He is voiced by Seth Rogen.
7. Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
Toad's solo poster features the happy-go-lucky mushroom adventurer surrounded by a field of fire flowers. Toad is known for their loyalty to Princess Peach and willingness to help their friends. In the Mario franchise, there are other individual Toad characters (e.g., Toadette, Toadsworth, Toadbert, and Captain Toad). In the movie, they are voiced by Keegan-Michael Key.
8. Jack Black as Bowser
The King Koopa himself, Bowser. His solo poster shows him with his volcanic castle in the background. The imagery of his castle is similar to what we've seen in past incarnations from Super Mario RPG and more modern Mario games like Super Mario Bros. on the Wii. Bowser will be voiced by Jack Black.
9. Peach Racing Down Rainbow Road
One of the latest posters featuring scenes from the movie, and has Peach on her Mach Bike from the Mario Kart series. We saw her in her racing attire in the first full trailer and Rainbow Road, but we're not sure who the gorillas are going after Peach.
