Comic-Con 2020 Cosplay Classics: The Best Marvel Cosplay From Last Year

Comic-Con is different this year. Besides the panels being released digitally for anyone to watch, there's a notable lack of big superhero brands like DC and Marvel (besides New Mutants, which, granted, we are very excited about).

There are some silver linings, but one thing we'll definitely be missing is the cosplay. Without anyone gathering in San Diego for Comic-Con 2020 thanks to COVID-19, we won't get to snap lots of shots of cosplayers in person. We're sure there will be plenty to see on social media, but it just won't be the same.

Instead, we're taking a look back at some of our favorite cosplay from Comic-Con years past. In that spirit, here's the best Marvel cosplay we encountered last year at San Diego Comic-Con 2019.

Tony Stark's Mark XLIV Iron Man armor is nicknamed Hulkbuster in the comics and Veronica in the MCU. In both cases, the armor was built for the same purpose: to give Tony the strength to take on the Hulk.

Dr. Steven Strange was a world-renowned surgeon before a car accident damaged his hands. His search for a cure led him down a mystical path, ultimately resulting in him becoming Earth's guardian from the supernatural, the Sorceror Supreme.

After being bitten by a radioactive spider and gaining its powers, Peter Parker became the web-swinging hero Spider-Man. Likewise, on another Earth in a different dimension, Gwen Stacey was bitten by a radioactive spider and took on the name Spider-Ghost. The two would finally meet in the Spider-Verse comic, promising to watch each other's back. This story was loosely adapted in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movie, with Spider-Ghost renamed to Spider-Woman.

Margaret "Peggy" Carter worked alongside Captain America during World War II, and the two fell in love. After Captain America was seemingly lost in an accident, Peggy went on with her life and started a family. When Captain America awoke in the present day, he went to find Peggy and found she was already an old woman. Cap then began a relationship with her descendant, Sharon Carter.

The Norse god of Thunder has been one of the Avengers since the very beginning, in both the comics and the MCU. In Avengers Endgame, Thor wields Stormbreaker and sports a new haircut and beard for the final battle against Thanos.

Before she became Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers was Ms. Marvel, a normal human who gained superpowers when her DNA was mutated via the blood of an alien Kree named Captain Mar-Vell. Carol would eventually go on to use the codename Binary, then Warbird, and finally Captain Marvel, leaving her original hero name to be used by Kamala Khan, an Inhuman.

Both T'Challa and his sister Shuri have held the title of Black Panther, a label given to the ruler of the African nation of Wakanda. The Black Panther possesses super strength, speed, and reflexes, all of which are augmented by a vibranium suit and assortment of gadgets. T'Challa has gone on to join the Avengers and Fantastic Four but Shuri has primarily remained a solo act.

Brother to Thor and Norse god of mischief, Loki was the original antagonist of the Avengers and has continued to be a thorn in the side of the superhero team for years.

Manipulated through his feelings for one of his classmates, who happened to be the personification of Death, Thanos sought the Infinity Stones to erase half of life in the universe. He amassed quite the following on his quest, including the last surviving member of the Zen-Whoberis species, Gamora. Gamora would eventually betray her adoptive father and join the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Peter Quill is a brilliant strategist and charismatic leader, excelling in his role as head of the Guardians of the Galaxy and king of Spartax. Though the MCU primarily portrays Gamora as his romantic partner, the comics actually wrote Star-Lord as the fiance to X-Men's Kitty Pryde, aka Shadowcat.

Shatterstar is a mutant from both the future and a different dimension. He possesses superhuman strength, speed, and intelligence.

Quentin Beck is a part of Spider-Man's core rogues gallery as the master of illusion, Mysterio. A gifted special effects artist and magician, Mysterio fights Spider-Man by subjecting him to illusions that seem so real, Spider-Man's brain usually believes they are.

Martin Li possesses two distinct personalities: one positive, and one negative. Martin is a kind-hearted man who runs a center to help the homeless and poor. His alter personality, Mister Negative, is Chinatown's Kingpin, who wields abilities that Martin doesn't even know he has--such as mind control.

Doreen Green is a brilliant mechanic and inventor who also possesses the powers of a squirrel. This includes a large tail that assists with her balance, powerful buck teeth, claw-like nails, superhuman agility and speed, and the ability to talk to squirrels.

Luke Cage, aka Power Man, was the first black superhero to be the title character of a comic book. After being subjected to an experimental procedure in prison, Luke is given superhuman strength and unbreakable skin.

Daniel "Danny" Rand is able to channel his chi into a near unbreakable mystical force in his hand. He uses this ability to fight crime as the costumed vigilante, Iron Fist.

Wanda Maximoff is the twin of Quicksilver and daughter of Magneto. Her mutant ability allows her to warp reality itself in any way she sees fit. Originally an enemy of the X-Men, she would later become a hero, join the Avengers, marry Vision, and start a family. The MCU heavily retconned this character, making the Scarlet Witch into a telekinetic and telepathic superhuman who gained her abilities through exposure to the Mind Stone.

In Captain America: Civil War, Peter reveals his original Spider-Man suit is completely hand-made--including the goggles which are constructed to keep his enhanced senses in check.

The last surviving member of her species, Gamora possesses enhanced strength and reflexes in comparison to the average human. Adopted as the daughter of Thanos, she betrays the Mad Titan and goes on to join the Guardians of the Galaxy.

There's more than one universe and thus there's more than one Spider-Man. In the "Ultimate" universe, Miles Morales becomes Spider-Man after Peter Parker dies defending New York from Green Goblin. Bitten by a different spider than Peter, Miles has a different assortment of spider-based powers, including camouflage and venom stingers in his finger tips.

An expert in various forms of martial arts from his previous work as a boxer, marine, and mercenary, Moon Knight is a formidable superhero even before he starts using his powers. Blessed by an Egyptian moon god, Moon Knight's physical talents are augmented at night with the level of superhuman strength dependent on how full the moon is.

Loosely based on the Norse figure Bryhhildr, Brunnhilde led Asgard's shield maidens, a group of warrior women who defended Thor's family. Brunnhilde and Thor eventually became lovers, and she adopted the alias Valkyrie when she became a superhero for Earth. Like her lover, Valkyrie eventually became one of Earth's mightiest heroes, joining the Avengers. This origin is loosely used for the character's introduction into the MCU in Thor Ragnorak, with some minor changes.

A mutant, Elizabeth "Betsy" Braddock uses her powers to fight crime as the superhero Psylocke. Her powers have adjusted and changed over time, with almost every iteration having a different loadout. Currently, Betsy is classified as an Omega-level mutant, putting her on par with Jean Grey as one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel comics.

Olivia "Liv" Octavius is the Doctor Octopus of Miles Morales' universe in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Like her other universe counterparts, Liv is a brilliant scientist who ultimately uses the four limbs she attaches to her body to engage in villianous acts.

The original Ant-Man and Wasp were founding members of the Avengers (replaced with Hawkeye and Black Widow in the MCU). After the original Ant-Man became Yellowjacket, he passed his suit on to an ex-convict, Scott Lang. Wasp would pass her legacy on to her daughter, Nadia van Dyne, a brilliant teenage inventor who spent the first half of her life trapped in the same Red Room that trained Black Widow and the Winter Soldier. In the MCU, Nadia is given a completely different backstory and renamed Hope.
