Deadpool and Wolverine is on the way
Deadpool and Wolverine's release date is set for July 26, 2024, but it won't be surrounded by numerous other Marvel movies. In the past, Marvel would release multiple films per year. But in 2024, the company has just this one movie on the docket. The film previously known as Deadpool 3 is the only Marvel film coming in 2024 as part of Disney's strategy of releasing fewer, better films every year. Or at least that's the idea.
In any event, the Deadpool series is a fan favorite, and with Hugh Jackman joining the film and a big cast of cameos, expectations are high.
Following its debut trailer during the Super Bowl in February and many other trailers that followed, Deadpool & Wolverine releases this Friday, and ahead of that, we're putting together all the essential news and information to know about the comic book film.
This gallery covers particulars like the cast, director, and release date, along with quotes and commentary about what to expect.
While 2024 might not have many Marvel films, fans can look forward to more to come in the future. 2025 sees the release of Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts, while the Fantastic Four reboot with Pedro Pascal is coming in 2025 alongside Blade.
But for now, here's everything you need to know about Deadpool & Wolverine.
What is Deadpool and Wolverine about?
Deadpool and Wolverine got its first trailer during the Super Bowl in February, and this provided a first glimpse at the story and tone. Not much has been confirmed about the story so far, but the official synopsis says Wolverine is "recovering from his injuries" when he comes upon Deadpool. Together, they team up to "defeat a common enemy." It remains to be seen who that foe might be. The Super Bowl trailer revealed that the Time Variance Authority (TVA) is involved in some capacity, and that likely means there will be some multiverse elements to this story, as has become commonplace in recent Marvel films.
But I thought Wolverine died?
In 2017's Wolverine movie Logan, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine died. But Jackman's version of the character is alive and well in Deadpool and Wolverine because of the multiverse, or maybe that Deadpool and Wolverine takes place before Logan–we don't know. In any event, Jackman has said he's very proud of the movie Logan and the send-off for Wolverine, so he wanted to be careful that any future appearances as Wolverine wouldn't overrule what happened in Logan.
"It's all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines," Jackman said. "Now we can go back because, you know, it's science [flashes airquotes]. So, I don't have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too."
Reynolds and Jackman have, for years, played up a fictional feud with some very silly videos, so it'll be fun to see the two together in a movie with Deadpool and Wolverine.
Who's in Deadpool and Wolverine?
Deadpool and Wolverine will feature a big cast of returning and new characters. There will be numerous cameos, according to comments from Karan Soni, who plays Dopinder. And they could be massive. For example, Jennifer Garner is rumored to come back as Elektra, while Sir Patrick Stewart might appear as Professor X. Taylor Swift, meanwhile, is said to appear in the film as Dazzler (update: not true). You can see the full rundown of confirmed and rumored cast and characters below.

Will Deadpool and Wolverine be rated R?
After Disney bought Fox, many wondered if the traditionally family-friendly Disney might make some changes to Deadpool specifically. But thankfully, that's not the case. Marvel's Kevin Feige confirmed the R rating back in 2021, saying that Reynolds is a "force of nature," and that he's excited to see the actor bring Deadpool to life once again.
Before that, Disney CEO Bob Iger said Disney would "continue that business" as it relates to R-rated Deadpool movies following the buyout of Fox. "We do believe there is room for the Fox properties to exist without significant Disney influence over the nature of the content," he said in 2019.
The first Deadpool and Wolverine trailer certainly alluded to things that might push the film's rating to R, including what could be the first utterance of "pegging" in Disney movie history.
More recently, Reynolds talked about how he was surprised and impressed that Disney allowed him to make an R-rated Deadpool movie.
"I hope it doesn't sound condescending, I'm really proud of [Disney and Marvel] for doing this," Reynolds said during an interview with Fandango alongside his co-star Hugh Jackman and their director Shawn Levy. "I think it's a huge step for them. I mean it adds a whole other color to this kaleidoscopic wheel that is that company and the different people that they have been entertaining for forever so I was surprised though that they let us go... hard R."
Who's directing Deadpool and Wolverine?
Shawn Levy, who directed Ryan Reynolds in Free Guy, is directing Deadpool and Wolverine. The producers include Reynolds and Levy, as well as Kevin Feige and Lauren Shuler Donner. Executive producers include Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, Simon Kinberg, and Jonathon Komack Martin. The movie was written by Reynolds, along with series scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, with additional writing credits for Zeb Wells and Shawn Levy.
When does Deadpool and Wolverine come out?
Deadpool and Wolverine releases in theaters on July 26, 2024. Presumably it'll eventually also come to Disney+ and join the first two entries, but we don't know when that will be just yet.
Rejected Pitches
Ryan Reynolds told Empire that one of his first ideas was to create a Rashomon-style movie about Deadpool and Wolverine about an adventure the pair shared, but told from "three completely different perspectives."
Marvel boss Kevin Feige, however, said no, in part because he himself wasn't sure what the best approach would be for Deadpool as a Disney property following the company's acquisition of the character. "The truth is, I wasn't even sure how to incorporate Deadpool yet," Feige said. "I was very much thinking about how to bring mutants and the X-Men into [the MCU], and I thought it needed to be more than just playing the hits. But the truth is, Ryan is an idea machine."
Rashomon, a 1950 film from legendary director Akira Kurosawa, told its story from multiple perspectives, and Reynolds was thinking of something similar originally for the next Deadpool film. That was one of more than a dozen thoughts and ideas that Reynolds brought to the table.
"I went back to the drawing board, and I wrote up about 18 different treatments," Reynolds said.
Another idea was to make a movie in the vein of a film that had a relatively small budget of under $10 million, not unlike a film that might make it into Sundance, Reynolds said. "Sort of using the IP in a way that they previously hadn't used," he said.
Reynolds said he also pitched "bigger" ideas and concepts that fell between small- and large-scale.
Executive producer Wendy Jacobson said the creative team took its time coming up with the best idea, and once Hugh Jackman signed on to come back as Wolverine, the process took off.
"We definitely spun our wheels a little bit trying to find the reason for this movie to be," Jacobson said. "Once Hugh raised his hand, two months later we were prepping. It was honestly one of the fastest turnarounds I've ever seen."
No Prior Knowledge Necessary
According to director Shawn Levy, you won't need to watch any previous MCU show or movie to enjoy Deadpool and Wolverine.
"I was a good student in school," related Levy during an interview with the Associated Press. "I'll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies. I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world. But I didn't want to presume that. This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research."
Tickets on sale now

Call of Duty crossover coming?
A leak has surfaced that seems to list a series of potential finishing moves with poses and mannerisms reminiscent of Marvel's Deadpool, suggesting there might be some kind of Deadpool & Wolverine event coming up soon to help hype the movie.
Data miner "Crashfty" has shared clips of unreleased finishing moves, which all use quirky execution styles very similar to what you'd see from Ryan Reynolds' portrayal of Deadpool, with a unique stance, a sarcastic wave, and even the way the operator plops down to lie next to the enemy's body.
The Season 4 battle pass ends on July 24, meaning that's likely the start of Season 5 and would make for a very well-timed crossover if the leaks are true, as the new Deadpool & Wolverine movie releases in theaters on July 26.
No Taylor Swift
Sorry, Swifties! Taylor Swift was rumored to appear in Deadpool & Wolverine as Dazzler, but that is not going to happen.
For a while now, it's been rumored that Taylor Swift would have a cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine as Dazzler. Swift will not appear in the film, however, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Rumors about Swift playing Dazzler gathered steam in 2023. Deadpool and Wolverine stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, along with director Shawn Levy, attended a 2023 Kansas City Chiefs football game with Swift, who was cheering on her boyfriend Travis Kelce. People theorized, based on no real evidence, that this might be indicative of Swift playing a role in the movie.
Reynolds and Levy played coy about Swift potentially appearing in Deadpool and Wolverine, in part presumably because it helped build buzz around the film. But now, EW says it can confirm that Swift is not in the movie.
Reviews
Deadpool & Wolverine reviews began to appear online on July 23. Here at GameSpot, our Deadpool & Wolverine review scored the film a 4/10. Reviews across the board are mixed, but so far, Deadpool & Wolverine is by far the lowest-rated Deadpool movie ever.
