During this year's Super Bowl, a teaser trailer for Deadpool 3 arrived, revealing the full title of the movie, Deadpool & Wolverine. However, it was one of those cases where you had to go online to watch the full clip. People across the world were disappointed to not see it during the broadcast of the big game. But then we all went online and quickly realized, "Yeah, you can't show this on TV."
The full trailer contained tons of violence, quite a bit of naughty language, and a reference to a sexual act that is a little less than broadcast TV-friendly. All in all, the trailer isn't really something you can put on one of the most-watched sporting events of the year. Arriving in theaters on July 26, Deadpool will finally find his way into the MCU… we think. We do know for sure that Deadpool will be traveling through the multiverse, finding himself in a situation where he has to team with the Time Variance Authority (TVA), along with killing them. Of course, it wouldn't be a comic book trailer without some fun Easter eggs, so we're breaking a bunch of them down.
1. Wade has the same friends!
It's Wade's birthday (his first one?). And according to the photo on the cake, he's still hanging out with the same group of people we've seen in previous Deadpool movies: Blind Al, Buck, Colossus, Peter, Shatterstar (wait, isn't he dead?), Vanessa, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Yukio, and Dopinder.
2. But seriously, Shatterstar is dead
During the X-Force parachuting sequence in Deadpool 2, Shatterstar's hair got in his face as he was parachuting to the ground. He fell into a helicopter and was cut into a million pieces, with green goo spraying everywhere (he's from the Mojoverse and is an alien, hence the lack of red blood). We probably shouldn't worry about the details here. Shatterstar is probably back because he looks really cool.
3. Deadpool's wig
This is the third time we've seen Deadpool with a wig--but it is the first time we've seen Wade in a wig. In promotional material for Deadpool 2, he wore a Bob Ross-inspired wig. For a scene in Deadpool 2, he wore a blonde wig in a strip club. Deadpool always looks good in a wig.
4. Deadpool and the number 17
Deadpool lives in apartment 17, so we dig some deep-diving to see if that is connected to Deadpool in the comics in any way whatsoever. Here's what we found.
Deadpool #17 (1997): Deadpool uses goggles to see into distant worlds, and he has a teleporter. Not much going on there.
Cable & Deadpool #17 (2005): Part of the "House of M" storyline, Deadpool finds Cable is alive and a baby.
Deadpool #17 (2009): Deadpool joins the X-Men.
Maybe Deadpool joins the X-Men? Hey, I had to research this, just in case, so you're going to have to read about it.
5. The TVA brings everyone together
If you're not keeping up with the Disney+ series Loki, here's a very quick recap. The Loki from Avengers: Endgame that grabs the Tesseract and disappears has become a variant Loki, as his journey branches away from the main timeline. In the Loki series, he's arrested by the TVA and eventually, he becomes a member of it. He jumps around between various universes, trying to fix all the branches. Warning: Avoid the rest of this slide if you want to avoid Loki Season 2 spoilers.
Things get even more intense in Loki Season 2, with the god of mischief ultimately sacrificing himself to save the timeline--though, he's not necessarily dead? Seriously, maybe you should just watch Loki.
In the trailer, Deadpool is greeted by members of the TVA. Is this the same TVA as the one that appeared in Loki? Unclear. Their outfits look similar, but the logo is a little bit different, as the Loki version fills in portions of the logo and leaves some portions of the logo outlined. Regardless, this is a big deal because it connects Fox's Marvel cinematic universe (which was also featured in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness) to the main MCU. The difference is that this version of Deadpool is a standalone franchise being introduced to the MCU and the Professor X from the Doctor Strange film may not have been a part of the X-Men franchise (Mainly saying that because of his X-Men '94 chair).
6. Do you know what you've gotten yourself into, Disney?
After the TVA shows up and shows them their weapons, which "delete" the person they attack from existence (they technically don't, but that's a whole other topic), Wade says, "Pegging isn't new to me, friend-o, but it is for Disney." Well, that's probably the only time in a Marvel movie that's going to be mentioned.
Warning if you're not familiar with that term: It's very NSFW.
7. Maybe it's a different TVA?
In the Loki series, the TVA's aesthetic is primarily orange and brown, except where A.D. Doug hangs out, which is more of a white-on-seafoam-green look. Later, we get back to an orange aesthetic for the inside, but it seems like more of a red than orange. However, considering the end of Loki Season 2, maybe things have changed? Or maybe this is a TVA from another universe? Or maybe they just had a little remodeling. It's hard to grasp, and the man here in charge of everything doesn't seem to be connected to the MCU TVA.
8. A salute for Captain America
Deadpool is introduced to the multiverse, and more specifically the MCU. The audience gets to see some of the heroes from the MCU, but there's a shot of three screens showing Captain America--two of which are from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which Wade wants to salute.
9. Pretty sure this is Professor X
After having to look up "The back of Patrick Stewart's head" on Google--I really did this– I can confidently say there's a very good chance this is Professor X. Stewart has been rumored to appear in the third Deadpool movie, reprising his role from the previous original X-Men movies, two Wolverine movies, one of the X-Men reboot movies, the previously mentioned Doctor Strange film, and 2018's Logan. Here he is, again. The best Professor X--sorry, James McAvoy.
10. That's where Logan died!
When Deadpool is killing a couple of TVA agents, in the background, you can see a fallen tree. In Logan, at the 2:08:33 mark of the movie, X-23 holds Logan as he breathes his last breath, but the viewpoint was on the other side of that tree--which we mainly know because in Logan, that's where the car was flipped over. The only difference is that this scene takes place after a snowfall, and Logan died without any snow on the ground.
11. Goodbye 20th Century Fox
Deadpool reloads his pistols in front of a half-buried 20th Century Fox logo. Disney bought the rights to many of its properties--mainly the Marvel stuff--a few years back. After that, the studio was renamed 20th Century Studios.
12. Totally not Doctor Doom
At first glance, watching this on my phone, I was 100% convinced that this was Doctor Doom. Upon further inspection, it's not; however, it does feel like the look of the character may have been inspired by Doctor Doom's costume.
13. Yes, that's Pyro
Yelling, "God, I love this part!," we briefly see a man in a red and yellow costume with red goggles around his neck. It's Pyro. How do we know? Well, the character in question is played by Aaron Stanford, who also played Pyro in X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand.
14. Here's Wolverine!
The final shot of the trailer shows off Wolverine, claws and all. We catch a glimpse of the character earlier in the trailer, but not in his outfit. Here, we get to see Wolverine in his classic '90s yellow and blue outfit.
