Doom Patrol Season 2: Everything We Know About The Bizarre DC Universe Series

For fans of the DC superhero streaming service DC Universe, this summer produced quite a bit of uncertainty. The cancellation of Swamp Thing after just one episode aired was quickly followed by the news that Warner will be launching another streaming service named HBO Max. Would that mean no more DC Universe? What would happen to shows such as Titans and Doom Patrol, not to mention upcoming series like Stargirl and the animated Harley Quinn show? Thankfully, the studio quickly confirmed that HBO Max "will not change" DC Universe, and at San Diego Comic-Con in July, it was announced that Doom Patrol will get a second season.

Doom Patrol was 2019's funniest, weirdest, and most original superhero show. The team of the series might have been introduced in an episode of Titans, but Doom Patrol is very different to the darker, more serious version from the Titans show. It's about a superhero team, but one that resembles a dysfunctional family more than an assembly of mighty heroes--these characters are damaged outcasts who are forced to live and work together simply because no one else will have them. But while the show is frequently very funny, it has real emotional depth too, spending as much time on building the relationships between the team members as it does sending them on strange adventures.

The first season of Doom Patrol is available in its entirety on DC Universe and is set to hit HBO Max when it launches next year. So while we're waiting for Season 2 to arrive, there are plenty of opportunities to revisit the first 15 episodes. But before you do any of that, here's our guide to everything we know so far about Doom Patrol Season 2...

Writer and showrunner Jeremy Carver will be back for Season 2. Carver told Entertainment Weekly about his plans for the next season and explained that he intends to dive into the long history of Doom Patrol in DC's comics for characters and storylines. "We have over 50 years of current and Silver Age and Bronze Age Doom Patrol comics," he said. "[They] really have been a lifesaver and an absolute repository of some of the most wonderfully bizarre and crazy ideas, but also beautiful character moments and depictions. We went full steam into Season 1 with a 'smoke 'em if you got 'em' attitude, and we intend to fully continue that in Season 2. There's a lot more where that came from."

All the main cast of Doom Patrol are expected to return for Season 2. So that's Timothy Dalton (Niles Caulder), Brendan Fraser (Robotman), Matt Bomer (Negative Man), April Bowlby (Elasti-Woman), Diane Guerrero (Crazy Jane), and Joivan Wade (Cyborg). There are also a variety of characters from Season 1 that we might me see again--including Alan Tudyk as Eric Morde and Tommy Snider as Beard Hunter--but nothing has been confirmed about them so far.

One character we can expect to feature for the first time is Dorothy Spinner, introduced as "the world's most powerful little girl." Caulder's super-powered daughter appeared right at the end of Season 1, but was only seen from behind as she emerges from Ezekiel's stomach. In DC's comics, Dorothy has the ability to make imaginary beings come to life; no news yet on who will play her in the show. Carver previously hinted how Dorothy's arrival might shift the team's dynamics. "We've introduced something of a major new character with the Chief's daughter," he told EW. "And we have still simmering resentments between the team and the Chief that will have to be resolved one way or another."

The final episode of Season 1 saw the team emerge from Ezekiel's stomach, having been eaten by the enlarged villain earlier in the episode. Unfortunately, it seems that Ezekiel is back to normal size, meaning the team--with the exception of Negative Man--are absolutely tiny. Carver previously hinted that working out how to get back to normal size will be a priority for the team. "It's a Doom Patrol pickle that feels very Doom Patrol to us," he told TV Insider.

No trailer has been released yet. There is a good chance we'll get one at this year's New York Comic-Con.

A specific release date for Doom Patrol Season 2 has not been announced yet, but it will be released sometime in 2020. It will be available on both DC Universe and HBO Max.
