Dragon's Dogma 2 Classes - Best Starting Vocation To Pick

Dragon's Dogma 2 allows you to choose from several classes, which all have unique capabilities. Some offer a straightforward means of decimating foes, while others grant support boosts. Still, you might want to know which one is ideal when you're beginning your journey. Here's our guide on the best starting vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2.

What is the best starting vocation (class) in Dragon's Dogma 2?

Dragon's Dogma 2 has the following starting vocations: Fighter, Archer, Thief, and Mage. Take note that you can always switch to a different class by talking to a Vocation Guild NPC. However, it's still a good idea to consider what's ideal given their respective roles.

    Thief

    Thief

The best starting vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2, arguably, is the Thief. This is primarily due to near-unrivaled DPS capabilities, where you're stabbing and slashing your foes into mincemeat. The Skull Splitter skill alone can take out chunks off a boss' health bar. Formless Feint, meanwhile, can be learned quite early in the campaign once you go to the Nameless Village. It makes you nigh invulnerable as you zip across the battlefield.

    Archer

    Archer

If you want to hang back and snipe foes from afar, then the Archer is the ideal pick for your starting vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2. The Tempest Shot skill allows you to rapidly fire dozens of arrows in a short span of time, while Exploding Shot deals tremendous damage. Augments like Endurance, Radiance, and Lethality are also great regardless of your active class.

    Fighter

    Fighter

The doughy Fighter is a frontline combatant, and the ideal option for those who like to get into the thick of the fray. It's pretty much the game's tanking class, given that it lets you equip a shield. The class allows you to bash foes with your shield, toss allies into the air, or do an area-of-effect taunt to make hostiles target you.

Sadly, we feel that the Fighter is better suited for pawns (i.e. your main pawn so you can choose specific abilities). You're better off as a Thief or Archer so you can fine-tune your damage-dealing skills and get the proper equipment.

    Mage

    Mage

Mages are invaluable members of the party, primarily because they can cast healing spells like Anodyne and Argent Succor. Moreover, the High Palladium spell grants a barrier that nullifies the first hit that connects, which can be a lifesaver. The class also has a few damage-dealing spells, too.

Unfortunately, much like the Fighter, the Mage is better off as a vocation for a pawn. Your AI-controlled companions are smart enough to cast healing and buffing spells when necessary anyway. In the same vein, you're more likely to find success as a Sorcerer (assuming you prefer playing as a spellcaster) due to its devastating magic attacks.

In the end, the best starting vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2 is, generally speaking, dependent on your preferred playstyle. There are those who might want to stay in the frontlines to tank enemy damage, and there are others who like to remain at the back, either shooting arrows or casting spells. The choice is entirely up to you.

Do take note that there are also other unlockable vocations, such as the Warrior, Sorcerer, Trickster, Mystic Spearhand, Magick-Archer, and Wayfarer. Moreover, there are Vocation Maisters that teach you ultimate techniques. Lastly, once you've discovered all the vocations in the game, you might want to check our class tier list to see which ones are head and shoulders above the rest.

Fierce foes and loyal companions await you as you journey onward in Dragon's Dogma 2. For other tips and strategies, you can visit our guides hub.
