The world of Dragon's Dogma 2 is vast and full of dangers. Since you're going to tackle numerous quest objectives and visit several settlements, you might want to know if there are ways to speed up exploration. Here's our guide on how to fast travel in Dragon's Dogma 2.
How to fast travel in Dragon's Dogma 2
There are several modes of transport or fast travel methods in Dragon's Dogma 2. Be forewarned, however, that they're not as straightforward as what you've come to expect in most role-playing games (RPGs) or adventure games. These fast travel methods include:
- Oxcarts
- Permanent Portcrystals
- Temporary Portcrystals
- Ropeways
Riding the Oxcart
You'll learn of the Oxcart and related mechanics just a few hours into the campaign. In fact, this will be your main mode of transport to get from one town to another. Here's what you need to know:
- Certain villages and towns (but not all) have Oxcarts that travel the road between them.
- An ox icon in a settlement denotes an Oxcart Station.
- You won't be able to ride Oxcarts anytime you please. Instead, you have to wait until it's morning. You can interact with the nearby signboard to wait for the proper time.
- You then have to pay the driver (anywhere from 100 to 200 gold).
- Once you're done, sit at the back of the Oxcart and press the "Doze Off" button prompt to fast-forward on your journey.
Oxcart Raids
Oh, you thought you'll have a pleasant trip, eh? Not so fast. That's because there's a chance for Oxcarts to get attacked by hostiles while you're on the road. When this occurs, you have to eliminate all enemies in the vicinity. Only then will you be allowed to ride the vehicle once more.
However, you also have to take note of a couple of facets:
- If the Oxcart has been tossed or turned on its side, you can interact with it to push it back to an upright position.
- If the Oxcart gets completely destroyed during the raid, you'll have to walk the rest of the way.
Permanent Portcrystals
Permanent Portcrystals are structures with a faint purple glow. These are found in a select few settlements, such as Vernworth and Harve Village. Once you've interacted with a Portcrystal, its location will be saved. Later, should you wish to return to this area, you'll have to use a Ferrystone (more on this item later).
Temporary Portcrystals
Temporary Portcrystals in Dragon's Dogma 2 are fairly rare and also quite expensive. Some, however, can be obtained as rewards, such as the ones from the Sacred Arbor and the Sphinx Riddles.
These Portcrystals are kept in your inventory, and you can plop them down in any outdoor location. For instance, if you visited an area in a far-flung region, you can place a Portcrystal in case you want to return sometime later. These items are also reusable, so you can pick them up and place them in a completely different place.
Ferrystones
Ferrystones are what you need to make use of Portcrystals (whether permanent or temporary). There are a few ways to get them:
- Some quests offer Ferrystones as rewards.
- A select few treasure chests might contain Ferrystones.
- Certain vendors sell Ferrystones, but they're fairly expensive (i.e. roughly 10,000 gold).
While playing Dragon's Dogma 2, we mostly avoided buying Ferrystones, relying instead of quest rewards and looted chests. We've managed to acquire around 20 of these during our run (and we haven't discovered everything yet).
Ropeway
Technically, the Ropeway is still a mode of travel where you're not walking around on foot. Ropeways are primarily found in the Battahl region, connecting the southern ridges from the Checkpoint Rest Town with the city of Bakbattahl.
To use a Ropeway, one character needs to continuously turn the lever until you reach the destination. It's better to let a pawn do this by looking at the lever and choosing the "Go" command. Note that you can get attacked by flying creatures, such as Harpies, while you're traveling via this contraption.
In any case, that's all you need to know about how to fast travel in Dragon's Dogma 2. The system is somewhat contrived and restrictive, and you'll often find yourself roaming around on foot. As such, it's a good idea to plan your treks in advance so you can save some time.
