Southern regions: Limgrave, Weeping Peninsula, Liurnia of the Lakes, and Caelid
The first locations we need to discuss in our Elden Ring world map guide are those in the southern part of The Lands Between. With Limgrave as the campaign's starting area, you'll soon find yourself exploring the unknown.
Limgrave
Once you exit the Stranded Graveyard mini-dungeon, you'll set your eyes upon the lush fields of Limgrave. This starting area is home to many threats, including Flying Dragon Agheel, who waits in the middle of a pond. Further to the northwest is your first true test: the Stormveil Castle legacy dungeon.
Weeping Peninsula
If you follow the main road going east and south of Limgrave, you'll arrive at the Weeping Peninsula. Its main fixture is Castle Morne: a fortress that, thankfully, isn't as sprawling or confusing as Stormveil Castle.
Liurnia of the Lakes
Liurnia of the Lakes is one of the largest regions in Elden Ring. Once you've gotten past Stormveil Castle, you'll notice a massive body of water that has submerged most areas. However, you'll also see various points of interest, such as the Academy of Raya Lucaria legacy dungeon, the Village of the Albinaurics, the mysterious Caria Manor, and the Three Sisters domain of sorcerers.
Caelid
You can reach Caelid via the main highway northeast of Limgrave, or by interacting with a chest trap in the Dragon-Burnt Ruins. While Caelid is right next to the game's starting zone, this is one region you do not want to visit until much later in the campaign. This is due to formidable enemies, as well as the insidious Scarlet Rot debuff.
Northern regions: Altus Plateau, Mount Gelmir, Leyndell, Mountaintops of the Giants, and Crumbling Farum Azula
As you progress further into the campaign, you'll eventually arrive at the northern portion of the world map in Elden Ring. Altus Plateau will be your jump-off point here to reach other locations.
Altus Plateau
There are two ways to reach the Altus Plateau from Liurnia of the Lakes:
- Ride the Grand Lift of Dectus - You need to acquire both halves of the Dectus Medallion. There's one in Fort Haight in Limgrave - Mistwood, and another in Fort Faroth in Caelid - Dragonbarrow. The medallion lets you ride the Grand Lift of Dectus.
- Climb up the Ruin-Strewn Precipice - If you follow the ravine that's north-northeast of the lake, you should be able to enter this mini-dungeon.
The Altus Plateau itself has paths that take you to various dungeons, such as the Shaded Castle and the Sainted Hero's Grave. There are also highways that lead to Mount Gelmir and Leyndell Royal Capital.
Mount Gelmir
If you follow the winding highway that takes you east then north in Altus Plateau, you should find yourself at the Bridge of Iniquity Site of Grace. There's a tall ladder along a cliff, which you can climb to reach the very top of the rocky crags. You should then arrive at Mount Gelmir proper, where the massive Volcano Manor legacy dungeon awaits.
Leyndell Royal Capital
Exploring the Elden Ring world map takes you on an unforgettable journey, which eventually culminates in numerous battles at Leyndell Royal Capital. This is also the site of the Erdtree, which gives life to the realm.
We don't want to spoil all the details here, but you'll venture into Leyndell Royal Capital initially, before making your way to the Mountaintops of the Giants and Crumbling Farum Azula. After that trek, you'll return to Leyndell Royal Capital to conclude the campaign proper.
Mountaintops of the Giants and Consecrated Snowfield
The Mountaintops of the Giants is a snow-covered region that's further northeast of Leyndell. There's also a separate section to the north known as the Consecrated Snowfield, which you're likely to visit if you're trying to unlock the Mohgwyn Palace secret area. Moreover, there's a legacy dungeon called Miquella's Haligtree, which is where you'll find Malenia, long considered the hardest boss in the base game.
Crumbling Farum Azula
Your journey brings you ever closer to Crumbling Farum Azula, which is a legacy dungeon that's more akin to a separate region in its own right, especially since it's a landmass in the middle of the ocean. The swirling vortices are frightening to behold, as are some late-game boss battles.
Underground regions: Nokron, Mohgwyn Palace, Deeproot Depths, Nokstella, and Lake of Rot
When talking about the Elden Ring world map, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the underground sections (i.e. an underworld counterpart to the overworld). These are basically optional areas that you can visit during your travels. These include Nokron Eternal City, Nokstella Eternal City, Mohgwyn Palace, Lake of Rot, and Deeproot Depths.
Nokron Eternal City
Once you've defeated Starscourge Radahn in Caelid, you should see a meteor that crashes somewhere in the continent. Head back to Mistwood in Limgrave to find a crater, then drop down the ledges until you stumble upon a surprise: a gigantic underground city!
Nokron Eternal City is also where you'll find the Mimic Tear, which is one of the best summons in the entire game.
Mohgwyn Palace
Those who plan on starting the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC need to gain access to Mohgwyn Palace. This is the domain of Mohg, the Lord of Blood, so expect a tough encounter once you face him.
Deeproot Depths
If you manage to defeat the Valiant Gargoyles in Nokron Eternal City, you'll be able to sleep in a coffin. Doing so takes you to Deeproot Depths, where you'll traverse giant branches to get around the area. This is also where you conclude the Fia quest chain.
Nokstella Eternal City
Nokstella Eternal City is yet another mystifying location in Elden Ring's world map. There are two ways to reach this place:
- Ranni and the Fingerslayer Blade - Progress Ranni's questline further until you have access to Renna's Rise in northwest Liurnia of the Lakes. You need to give her the Fingerslayer Blade item from the Night's Sacred Ground dungeon in Nokron Eternal City.
- Deeproot Depths - Upon arriving at the Nameless Eternal City Site of Grace in Deeproot Depths, look for a coffin that you can interact with.
Both methods take you to the Ainsel River and, from there, you should find yourself in Nokstella Eternal City. This strange locale has numerous traps, including large bowling balls that can crush your character.
Lake of Rot
If you manage to get past the dangers in Nokstella Eternal City, you should stumble upon a lift that leads further down. You'll then see the blood-red waters of the Lake of Rot which, as the name implies, causes the Scarlet Rot affliction. If Caelid already gave you a headache, then be ready for the Lake of Rot to cause migraines.
That does it for our Elden Ring full world map guide. As you venture forth into these areas, don't forget to obtain map fragments to reveal your surroundings. Likewise, we've got a Shadow of the Erdtree DLC regions guide and DLC map fragments guide.
