    Every GameSpot 10/10 Review Score

By GameSpot Staff on March 4, 2025 at 8:11AM PST

    The gaming essentials.

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

    The gaming essentials.

It isn't often that we give 10/10 review scores on GameSpot. Since the site was founded in 1996, only 28 games have earned that rank. But to achieve a 10/10, a game needs to be essential, and it needs to have something so meaningful to offer us that it simply cannot be ignored. Regardless, a 10/10 review score is always determined by the personal opinion of its respective writer and always reflects as such. So without further ado, here is a list of all the games that we've scored with a 10/10! For more details on the review process and what a 10/10 means at GameSpot, check out our in-depth Q&A below.

What makes a game a 10, and has that definition changed over the years? Does a 10 mean it's "perfect"?

A 10 does not mean a game is perfect, but it does mean that it's a game we believe everyone should play. In our opinion, no game can be considered perfect. That means you may see a game getting a 10 despite having issues. It also means that games without obvious flaws may be scored below 10.

On the rare occasion when we publish a 10 review, that is our way of saying that no matter your preference for genre, developer, setting, or console, you owe it to yourself to find a way to play the game in question.

A review is obviously just one person's opinion, so how do you deal with conflicting thoughts on a game, both for high and low scores? What if someone else on GameSpot thinks a game deserves a much higher (or lower) score?

It's true that every review is an individual's take on a game, and sure enough, the many individuals within GameSpot often have differing opinions on the same game. This is something we accept, and we welcome diversity of opinion at the end of the day.

GameSpot's editorial team peer-reviews each other's work during the review process. This is not to determine whether we all agree on a score, but it allows us to ensure that the text we publish backs up the score that's issued. That means that there are reviews published where we may not all agree with the editor's opinion, but are otherwise confident enough in their argumentation to put our stamp on the review.

When the time comes that a score fails to align with the text as submitted, we will work together with the author to determine if they were able to effectively convey their thoughts relative to the score, and vice versa. We always encourage our writers to put their words down first and determine the score after the fact.

"Split Fiction could very well be the best cooperative game I've ever played. At the very least, I firmly believe it sets a new standard for the genre. And yet, it's more than that. Split Fiction is a love letter to creativity--to stories, games, and the people who make them. It is funny, dark, joyous, childish, tender, cheesy, thrilling, and remarkable." Read the full review.

    Metaphor: ReFantazio

    Metaphor: ReFantazio

"Somehow, Metaphor: ReFantazio is even greater than the sum of its parts, yet each piece of the game is masterfully crafted. I found the whole experience transcendent and was impressed by how it felt both novel yet familiar--elevated and modern, yet so reminiscent to the fantasy RPGs I sunk countless hours into on my little grey PlayStation. But most importantly, it made me remember that we are lost without hope. It sounds silly and cliche, I know--sometimes it can be. It also certainly doesn't put out the fires set all over the world. But it reminded me that giving into despair and fear serves no one, myself included. It reminded me that fantasy and fiction have power--words and stories have power. They can inspire and comfort, and these things that are vital to preserving. And it reminded me that the proof of good in the world can be us, and that's a good start." Read the full review.

"Alan Wake 2 is one of the most ambitious games I've ever played, but don't misconstrue that, as it doesn't fall short of its lofty goals. On the contrary, Alan Wake 2 achieves virtually everything developer Remedy Entertainment set out to do. It's a game that feels novel and risky that is executed with confidence and a clarity of vision. The end result is a one-of-a-kind sequel that redefines its series, blazes trails in video game storytelling, and stands as the monument to a studio that has unlocked its potential to the fullest." "Near the end of Baldur's Gate 3, a character says, "Too much freedom can be frightening." It's a powerful line within the context of the story, but it also speaks to Baldur's Gate 3 on a deeper level. The freedom that it offers is unprecedented, and it takes a little while to really see the scope of what that means for the game. At times, the sheer number of choices and consequences can be overwhelming. But before long, it becomes apparent that Baldur's Gate 3 allows players to be the authors of their own destinies in a way no other game has before." Read the full review.

It's a fantastic mix of nearly everything you could ask of Cyberpunk. And after taking 30 hours to experience all of its content--both main story routes, the new ending, all the side missions and gigs, and more--I can't imagine Cyberpunk 2077 without Phantom Liberty." "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is so much more than a sequel to Breath of the Wild. While this newest entry in the Zelda franchise is most recognizably similar to that 2017 game, it builds upon the foundation so thoroughly and transformationally that it feels like a revelation. This is The Legend of Zelda at its finest, borrowing the best pieces and qualities from across the franchise's history and creating something new that is emotionally resonant, captivating, and endlessly rewarding." Elden Ring takes the shards of what came before and forges them into something that will go down in history as one of the all-time greats: a triumph in design and creativity, and an open-world game that distinguishes itself for what it doesn't do as much as what it does." "Perhaps the most laudable part of Deathloop is how it takes so many seemingly disparate things and creates harmony between them. Gameplay systems that feel isolated become pieces of a bigger puzzle, and when you see how they seamlessly connect together, you realize how special an achievement it really is. Similarly, on paper, the different aesthetics should be like oil and water, but they come together effortlessly to be part of a greater whole, and, for me, that's what Deathloop is really about. By standing back and looking at the bigger picture, the uncharacteristic choices and unexpected behaviors feel necessary--essential even." Read the full review.

Learning the various operators and how to breach or protect a room with them can be a slow crawl, but Siege makes it easy to understand what your mistakes are, thanks in part to seeing both sides of every match. "For anyone who appreciates games that rise above the simple act of pushing a few buttons and pulling a few triggers, Metal Gear Solid 4 is a stimulating ride that you won't soon forget. You'll want to see what happens next, yet when its long campaign draws to a close, you'll wish it would continue. That's not just because it's a well-told tale, but because that tale is woven through a thoroughly impressive game that tops its predecessors." Read the full review.

"In case you haven't guessed already, Grand Theft Auto IV is a game that you simply have to play. The single-player game, which you can still play long after you complete the story, is the series' best by far, and the multiplayer features are good enough that you'll likely have no problem finding people to play with for many months to come. The minor flaws that you'll experience are no more difficult to overlook than those in previous GTA games, and they're greatly outnumbered by the features that will impress and surprise you anytime you think you've already seen everything that the game has to offer. It's all subjective, but Deathloop and Into the Breach don't belong anywhere near a 10. Deathloop is a boring grindfest with a whole concept based on repetition. That and it isn't nearly as good as Arkane's other games like Prey and Dishonored and none of those are on this list. Enter the Breach is beyond easy because it tells you what your opponent is going to do. I played it once, won it and never touched it again and I'm far from some great skilled gamer. That and like Deathloop, it isn't as good as FTL and somehow that didn't get a 10, but this did. The rest are meh, and there are some startling omissions, but those two are not 10 out of 10 gaming experiences.

@loveblanket: A 10 here doesn't mean a game is perfect with no flaws. It means the reviewer thinks it's good enough that everyone, even gamers who aren't usually interested in that kind of game, should take a look.

1997 to 2004 There was a respect of the 10. Then after 2004 these kids giving out 10s to these games that are 100% not 10s is a joke.

The fact that Red Dead Redemption 2 did not make this list while others like Journey and FF7 remake did, shows that these ratings are indeed very subjective. RDR2 and Skyrim to me is two of top 5 video games every made.

Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild are 5/10 at best. Boring gameplay, crappy graphics, extremely low framerate, empty world, shrines with meaningless rewards, weapon system makes you holding a bone or a treebark 80% of the time, and virtually non-existent story. The other five points were just given for nostalgia and extreme Nintendo/Zelda bias.

Super Mario Odyssey is also a joke. Collecting stars just for the sake of it, ancient graphics, boring gameplay, perhaps 5/10 before Astrobot came out, and now that Astrobot is here I feel that Odyssey is a solid 2/10 at best.

I’ll never understand why Journey got 10/10. It’s not really a game. It’s an empty world, requires no skill or intelligence to complete and it’s over in a couple of hours. It’s a glorified demo.

Wow, 2002-2007 had zero 10’s. That’s a pretty long stretch.

Deathloop seems out of place, although I did enjoy it a lot. Several games on the list I tried to like but just couldn’t, namely all of the Metal Gear games and Super Mario Galaxy.

    Lots of great games otherwise.

@thebadjesus: I believe it was around 2007 or 2008 when they went from scoring by tenth points to half points, and then whole points more recently. Up until that point it just seemed absurd for two games to get 10's in the same year. Like Metroid Prime got a 9.7, which would have been a 10 if they'd used today's scoring back then.

And yeah, Deathloop was fun, but it seems like the only people who were truly impressed by it were Gamespot, IGN, a handful of other review site, and those on the VGA committee.

@thebadjesus: They used to have decimal grades (9.5, 9.9, etc.) so they could punk out and not have to make a choice between a 9 or a 10.

I am not in agreeance with the majority of the games listed here, soulslikes especially, but am amazed that FF7 Rebirth has no place on this list or RE2 Remake for that matter. But, nonetheless, it is a pretty decent list, however, I noticed many games that deserve a spot on it just as much if not more so than the majority that are here!

@Jimbowesker: As I look back on the year, Rebirth is probably going to easily be my favorite and most memorable game (as remake was when it came out), but that shoddy open world stuff held it back from the 10 club.

Whenever I'd get back to the main story or even just exploring the world and taking it in, I couldn't stop thinking about how freaking fantastic it was, but the Chadley bloat wasn't compelling, and it the clunky format didn't mitigate it. Maybe I'll feel different in my inevitable next playthrough though.

So many of the game on this list just reminded me of how Gamespot's take is so different from my own. I can't stand JRPGs or soullike boring slugfests. Witcher 3, BG3 and MGS are great but the rest I wouldn't play if you paid me.

I notice a pattern here--most of the recent titles that got the 10 score were reviewed by the same person. Maybe he/she is a reviewer who gets satisfied, "too easily"?

Another noticeable aspect here is that no sports, racing/simulation or real time strategy games are in the list. Also, among hundreds of awesome fighting games, the only game that made the list is "Soul Caliber".

What about Tekken, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and King of Fighters?

Also, very few true RPG representation--no mass effect, neverwinter knigts or dragon age. Only saving grace is Baldur's gate 3 and Witcher 3.

@DeadManRollin: I see several "true" RPGs. The ones you mentioned, Persona 5, Chrono Cross, Disco Elysium. I would consider those closer to true RPGs. I don't think there's a Dragon Age game deserving, but I digress. I think GameSpot does a pretty good job about being open on their process and being fair, although I do agree that the weight of more recent games having more tens is telling that the score has gotten easier to attain.

@DeadManRollin: And each of those were an idiosyncratic personal opinion and should be evaluated based on the arguments made, the games they were assigned, etc. Whining that "this dude always gives a 10" looks pretty silly if the reviews are Elden Ring, BG3 and Witcher 3 or something. And that's setting aside it looks pretty silly to whine about it at all when you and the reviewer have every right to disagree without it becoming a matter of you accusing the reviewer of ulterior motives, etc. Maybe...just maybe...you're two different people with different viewpoints and ways of looking at things.

@esqueejy: It's not like that, to be honest. Unlike you, I've actually read each and every one of his reviews. I welcome you to go ahead, read them and then come back here to continue the argument from an objective point of view.

I'm a long time reader of game reviews...I was in to professional video games journalism for a while, too. So I am not just bringing this out of thin air.

But then again, I am not really "accusing", I am just sharing my observation.

In my opinion, 10s should be given to only once in a generation, genre changing, awe inspiring, totally "wow"ing games that can be enjoyed by a wider group of people.

@dangilly: They're way beyond mid, that's true. So beyond that they're 10/10's. Extremely good video games with unparalleled game design, level design, sound design, iconic characters and music, physics-based gameplay meshed with environmental reactivity.

Usually Gamespot does very good reviews but Deathloop is the worst game I've ever played.

Now that gap between 2001 and 2008 was an interesting insight, titles like Half Life 2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Company of Heroes, or The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion weren't "must-plays" regardless genre, developer, settings, or systems at that time.

Thanks for the article, it certainly helps to support the concept that review scores are a thing of the past. And for anyone in the doubt go check Frost's Cold Take on "Why Are We Still Using Review Scores?"

@Lan_EX_Hikari: For a good chunk of the 2000's gamespot was still using 9.3, 9.7, 9.8 etc., so less games were perfect 10's. Also kotor, company of heroes and oblivion do not hold up well at all. This list is surprisingly prescient with how well their early 10's held up.

@Lan_EX_Hikari: Review scores = just one reviewer's opinion.

Frost's Cold Take = just one person's opinion.

Is this helping you understand how things work yet? "Quantifying" an opinion by using a numeric scale is not the same as making the opinion "objective". The problem with Frost's "Cold Take" is that he is conflating the two, treating use of a number as if that automatically means it's an attempt to decree a universal, empirically derived opinion that cannot be argued with. He's therefore engaging in the same brain damage so many other people do when they complain about reviews in the first place. If you start from understanding and accepting that the review is just one person's opinion and that the numerical value they assigned the game on that scale is just a short-hand way of expressing their idiosyncratic opinion, then the problem goes away (at least for yourself, because idiots are still going to yell). The reviewer is saying "I think it's a 9 for me" and then everyone yells as if they said "it's a 9 for everyone and you have to adopt that as your opinion or you're wrong." That knee-jerk, predictable response outcome won't be undone or prevented by simply not using a pretend numerical scale that everyone should be acknowledging and understanding is still just a subjective measure.

Would it be less confusing for the dullards out there who engage in this brain damage if numerical scores were only used in the context of an attempt at an objectified quantification framework? Nope. That would only shift their ranting into whatever new framework you espouse. You cannot teach these people that they are engaged in silliness and you cannot undermine their ability to engage in it. They are looking for an excuse to engage in it and the fact that they are going to engage in it is pre-determined. They are reactionaries hellbent on finding fault and firing up the silliness thrusters to ludicrous speed, and anything you do to try to combat that will be met with a reaction of shifting the goalposts to ranting within ANY new framework you use.

GTA4 is probably the most overhyped game ever.

I think a lot of these are great, but Deathloop has been a bit of a running joke since it came out.

Every time a new 10 is given Gamespot feels the need to trot out this lame article once again. Must be defensiveness or something.

Let me tell you something: There is no such thing as 'essential'. Some of these games I will never play and you shouldn't ever play either, since the genre or gameplay does not appeal. Even some of the games that interested me in concept turned out to be garbage (Disco Elysium).

@MK245: Why are you telling people to never play games you've never even played. What do you get out of that?

As far as lists go, this one is pretty good. Definitely some outliers here (Deathloop, FFVII, and Uncharted 4 are simply put, not 10s), but overall, I agree with the list for the most part. I would probably add Battlefield 3 (best multiplayer FPS of all time) and RDR2, but other than that, well done GameSpot. 👍

@jamejame: After seeing how FF7 Rebirth Is shaping up and all the content/scope that the full Remake will have as a whole experience when It's all said and done , It really may deserve that 10 , but only as a whole with all parts considered , FF7's always been a larger than life game world where the whole was greater than the sum of It's parts.
