While Marvel Studios has its own cinematic universe and as DC Entertainment begins to build theirs, Fox is working at expanding their already established X-Men cinematic universe. The studio has already released eight films, including six X-Men movies and two Wolverine films, and now, they're moving into television as well. What does the studio have in store for fans? We're checking out what Fox has coming down the pipeline. Here is everything we know about their upcoming projects.
[UPDATE 3/13] New information surfaced about the untitled X-Men television series. Click here to learn more.
Legion
FX's newest series, Legion, is the first of the planned X-Men-related series. The show follows David Haller, a mentally ill psychiatric patient. He's under the delusion he can move objects with his mind. It's based off of the Marvel character of the same name. In the comics, Haller is the son of Professor X.
As far as we know, the show exists in its own world, and it may eventually touch on Haller's relationship to his estranged father, but the focus will primarily be on Haller. Check out our review of the first episode here. Legion airs on Wednesdays at 10 PM ET.
Logan
Fox's only X-Men film coming out this year is Logan. It's the final Wolverine film, with Hugh Jackman playing the titular role. The third, R-rated, film will take place in a different timeline than other movies in the X-Men franchise. If you're a fan of the comic storyline it's loosely based on--"Old Man Logan"-- check out "7 Things From the Wolverine Comics That Won't Happen in Logan." Logan hits theaters on March 3.
"Gifted"
Originally, Fox was developing a series based on the Hellfire Club, which is about a group of social elite which thinks mutants are superior. However, the show has morphed into something completely different. Writer Matt Nix (Burn Notice) will be penning the new series and Bryan Singer (X-Men) will direct the pilot. It takes place in a world where mutants are feared and hated. The show will also feature a version of Sentinels. Fox ordered a pilot, so we may see it as soon--although unlikely--at the tail end of 2017.
[UPDATE 3/13/17]:The working title of the show was revealed: "Gifted." It could change between now and the time the show airs.
20th Century Fox's Four Slotted Dates
Here is where things get even more mysterious. According to Box Office Mojo, Fox has four "Untitled Marvel Fox Films" slated between 2018 and '19. Even more interesting is the fact that Fox currently has five films in some form of production. There is no other information aside from these dates.
2018: March 2, June 29, and November 2
2019: February 14
X-Men: The New Mutants
Production is about to begin on X-Men: TheNew Mutants, the X-Men spinoff series that will follow teenagers with mutant powers. Director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) recently revealed some concept art for the upcoming film. The only confirmed for the star is Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane.
Because the film starts shooting in May, we're thinking that New Mutants will come out in Fox's first slotted date, on March 2, 2018.
Deadpool 2
The Deadpool sequel is in the works, but it's already had a few stumbles. Director Tim Miller has left the project, followed by the composer. However, the sequel picked up John Wick director David Leitch. There are a plethora of casting rumors floating around the net, like Kerry Washington playing Domino and Pierce Brosnan playing Cable, but there have been no confirmations.
Deadpool 2 may start filming in the first half of 2017, but there is no information on when production begins. Because of this, we're thinking the film will come out on June 29, 2018.
X-Force Movie
When it comes to the potential Fox/Marvel movie timeline, we're not sure where X-Force fits. The modern version of this Marvel property is known for being more of a covert-op, ultra-violent team, hence why Deadpool and Wolverine were both on it. Olivia Munn, who played Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse, wants to be in the movie. However, according to some reports, it seems like the team will be introduced later down the line, in Deadpool 3.
Because of this, we're not sure whether this film will come out on November 2, 2018 or February 14, 2019, and that's if Fox keeps their slotted release dates.
Deadpool 3
Deadpool was a smash-hit, even though it was an R-rated film. Fox went ahead and greenlit not only a sequel, but also a third film. As we stated earlier, there have been reports that the X-Force will be in the third film, some of which say that the film will be the introduction of the team. However, considering that Deadpool 2 could be released on June 29, 2018, we don't see the third film coming out just a few months later, unless the second and third movie are filmed back-to-back.
Gambit
Finally, there's Gambit, which has been in pre-production hell for years. It's been delayed twice and completely dropped from Fox's movie release schedule. Channing Tatum would be playing the charismatic rogue mutant, but that seems to be the only consistency about the movie. X-Men producer Lauren Donner told the press, back in January, that the movie is still happening (via Slashfilm). There is no release date, and supposedly, filming will begin this spring, as stated in a report last summer.
Considering this film keeps getting moved around so much, we don't think it's one of Fox's "Untitled Marvel Fox Films."
