A Quiet Place: Part II is the much-anticipated sequel to 2018's horror hit A Quiet Place. The first movie was highly acclaimed by critics and hugely popular with audiences, and it ultimately grossed more than $340 million worldwide from a production budget of just $17 million. It didn't take long for a follow-up to be greenlit.
A Quiet Place was directed by John Krasinski. Prior to 2018, the actor was best known for playing lovelorn Jim Halpert in nine seasons of The Office, as well as for comedic roles in movies such as Away We Go and The Muppets. There were some eyebrows raised when Krasinski was cast as Jack Ryan in Amazon's adaptation of Tom Clancy's spy thrillers, although he had previously shown his tough guy persona in Michael Bay's military thriller 13 Hours. However, absolutely no one was expecting that he would also direct one of that year's best and most successful horror thrillers.
A Quiet Place wasn't Krasinski's directorial debut, though. In 2016, he made the little-seen romantic drama The Hollars. However, his second movie really was the calling card for a major filmmaker--a confident, engrossing film that transcended its gimmicky set-up (make a sound and a monster will get you) to become a tense, scary, and moving experience.
There was talk of a sequel before the movie had even left theaters, and A Quiet Place: Part II started production in June 2019, ahead of a March 2020 release date. But like almost every big movie last year, the film was delayed and won't be with us for a couple more months. But while we wait, here's everything we know about A Quiet Place: Part II so far.
What's the release date?
A Quiet Place: Part II hits theaters on May 28, 2021. This is the film's fifth release date. It was originally scheduled to arrive on March 19, 2020 but was delayed to September 2020. This date was subsequently moved to April 2021, then to September, then forward again to the end of May. It will also be making its streaming debut on Paramount+ in the summer. It has been announced that Paramount's big movies will hit its new streaming service 45 days after their theatrical release.
Who's directing the movie?
John Krasinski is the director of A Quiet Place: Part II. Krasinski was initially resistant to returning, stating, "I didn't want anything to do with it because, weirdly, as much as I'm the writer-director, I'm also a huge fan of this movie. I didn't want to be a part of anything that would be viewed as a cash grab." Nevertheless, in February 2019 he confirmed on Instagram that he would direct the second movie.
Who’s the writer?
Krasinski has also written the script for A Quiet Place: Part II. Krasinski was not actually the original writer of the first movie, although he did rework the initial spec script by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck.
Who's in the cast?
The main cast of the first movie are set to return, plus some new names. Emily Blunt will be back as Evelyn Abbott, with Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe reprising their roles as Evelyn's kids Regan and Marcus. They will be joined Cillian Murphy, who according to The Hollywood Reporter will play "a man with mysterious intentions who joins the family unit," plus Djimon Hounsou, who replaces the initially-cast Brian Tyree Henry. However, Krasinski himself isn't set to appear as dad Lee, having met an unpleasant end in the first movie.
What’s the story?
The trailer reveals that the Quiet Place sequel will take events beyond the single farm setting of the first movie. Evelyn, Regan, and Marcus are on the move and encounter Murphy's character, who warns them that that the people who have survived "are not the kind of people worth saving." The movie will also feature flashbacks that suggest that we might also find out the origins of the monster apocalypse.
In addition, Krasinski previously spoke about the decision to expand the movie's scope. "I had this very small idea, and what it was is that this is a world you can play in," he told EW. "[It] isn't just a character to remake or a group of characters or a story. It's actually a world, which is a whole different, very unique experience."
Is there a trailer?
The movie was literally a week from release when it was delayed for the first time, so a lot of trailers and promos had been released. The first trailer for A Quiet Place: Part 2 was released at the start of January 2020 and was followed by a Super Bowl teaser and these promo videos.
What's the budget?
The first movie had an extremely modest budget of $17 million, which make its massive gross an even more impressive achievement. Emily Blunt took a big pay cut to star in the film, as it was being directed by her husband Krasinski. However, The Hollywood Reporter states that the budget for A Quiet Place: Part II will be "much higher." What we've seen of the movie so far suggests that we will see a lot more money on screen.
Will there be a third movie?
Even though A Quiet Place: Part II won't arrive for several more months, a third movie is in development. In November last year, it was reported that Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special) had been hired to write and direct the next film in the series. The movie is currently scheduled for a 2022 release, but that is likely to change.
