"What Remains of Edith Finch feels like a great page turner of a book that is full of unexpected twists and turns. It's a game that you'll want to recommend to friends as soon as you finish it. Without giving too much away, one of its greatest strengths is that it tells a story that can only effectively be conveyed through a video game. The impact is bolstered by top-notch voice acting and a surreal and magical world that is somehow still rooted in reality. If you decide to give What Remains of Edith Finch a shot, you'll be treated to one of the most surprising and riveting hits of the year."

In the eternal and ever-human challenge of coming to grips with who you are, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice shows us--through the lasting connections Senua has with her loved ones--that you are not alone in the struggle. "At a time when nobody would blame you for feeling burned out on open-world games, Horizon: Zero Dawn came along and re-lit the smoldering flame. It fell back on a few common practices seen in other games, sure, but it's predominantly defined by unique traits and accomplishments. You look back on it once the credits roll in awe of where you've been and what Aloy has become. And once you're done processing the impact of the ending, you'll wonder: where will this possibly go next? It's not immediately clear, but we can't wait to find out."

"Super Mario Odyssey is, in effect, a massive playground that encourages you to test the limits of Mario's abilities and your own ingenuity in the face of myriad options. With throwback outfits and retro Mario levels inserted into otherwise 3D spaces, it no doubt appeals most to people with a fondness for Mario's (and Nintendo's) past. But Odyssey is the type of game that feels like a no-brainer for anyone who enjoys the act of play. It's what we at GameSpot call an "essential" game. It not only finds success in playing fast and loose with one of gaming's most recognizable mascots, it succeeds at reaffirming the reasons why Mario is held in such high regard at all."

Aside from a couple of multi plat titles, none of the top 10 are Xbox games. I wonder what 7tizz has to say about that. He's been mysteriously absent.

@whizz_pt: To be fair, there weren't any exclusives this year except Forza and Cuphead. The PC had a better year than Xbox as far as exclusives, because if you count the PC as a platform, then even Forza and Cuphead are not exclusives.

@lostn: I'm not an Xbox hater, but there is absolutely no reason for me to own an Xbox One when I have a great gaming PC and a PS4. I also own a Switch, but that really doesn't add to the argument here.

I personally think Horizon Zero Dawn was above BotW. I got bored of BotW fast but Horizon and it's DLC kicked ass, I even plat'd it! I hope to get back around to Zelda one day but I'll be opening Persona 5 soon. Overall this is a great list, I own most if not all but have yet to get to them. Resident Evil 7 is definitely my GoTY though.

I my self would put persona 5 above breath of the wild, BOTW had too many issues to be rated as highly as it is but meh that’s the Nintendo score which seems to affect a lot of there games not to say there games are bad I’ve played almost every one of there exclusives this year apart from Arms but it’s more they seem to get a free pass most of the time if any other games had BOTW technical issues at launch they would have gotten smashed into the ground for it

@thedud3abides: Eh, too much to do I'd disagree with. That was my big problem with it really. Take the size of 'The Witcher 3s' world, and take away things to compel you. Skyrim, Witcher, games of the sort have tons of little miniature stories to draw you into the side stuff. You don't get that here.

Beyond the memories and main quests, theres not a ton of story of any sort. So the side quests are usually for rupees or sometimes equipment you don't need. I ended up beating the game in 30 hours. All 4 main guardians defeated, scales from the 3 dragons, 'the sword that defeats darkness', and a few other things. Could've easily done it in 20, not knowing all you needed is a good stack of Arrows for Ganon.

Great game, definately. Have its quality of life problems? Absolutely too.

Its sad to see AC Origins completely overlooked from most publications in terms of awards.

I really liked Horizon, I completed it and felt the gameplay was great and the story was OK. Origins has great gameplay and a great story. They're both beautiful but I don't see competition, in my eyes AC is clearly superior.

Sad it doesn't even get a mention.

@ConnorAztecHaye: What are you talking about. Origins is not superior to HZD, lol.

All this is subjective. So look at overall reviews of both games. HZD beats AC Origins with ease. This is also my opinion. Origins was good. HZD was amazing. Zelda was amazing.

@LasDK: I'm not saying it's bad. Just I think Horizon is overrated. Can't comment on Zelda as I have not played it. All I'm saying is I feel AC has been sadly overlooked by a large amount of the industry.

@ConnorAztecHaye: Subjective again, look at overall reviews. HZD easily beats AC Origins.

I found AC Origins a typical Ubisoft game, nothing impressive at all. Which is exactly what other people think when you read user reviews.

There's a reason for Origins didn't get in Top 10. It's simply not that good.

HZD and Zelda BOTW are masterpieces compared to Origins.

No idea how Wolfenstein gets in the top 10, and Cuphead doesn't. Wolfenstein is a generic shooter without MP that takes us back to the days of picking up health and ammo, while moving around a linear level. No better than COD, and that was dated.
Even given that it's just officially been released on PC, PUBG is game of the year for me. Yes, I know the reasoning behind not including it, but considering it started off as a mod, and then went on to outsell ALL the games on this top 10 list, and considering nothing compares to being in a house and then hearing footsteps .... I'd at least put it in there. Mario is way, way better than Persona - but that's my opinion.

@sealionact: I'm guessing you didn't play Wolfenstein if you think it's "generic".

@TheEternalGamer: Well you guessed wrong. What's not generic about it? The graphics are average, the gameplay is archaic (Clear a room of enemies, then go around looking for med kits, armour and bullets) and even gunplay is poor.

It's an ok game, but nowhere near my top 10 for 2017.

@sealionact: if marios end game was better I may have agreed but unfortunately the extra moons were so damn easy and no where near as interesting to obtain as the original sets

Can’t comment on PUBG since I’ve never bought a single early access game on steam it’s a god awful business practice and majority of the games don’t deserve your money *cough* ARK *cough*

Does pubg not count? If so it's at the top for me, if not I'd probably go with..

    1. Cuphead

    2. NBA 2K18

    3. Injustice 2

    4. Horizon Zero Dawn

    5. Forza 7

    6. Zelda (even though I really don't enjoy it)

    7. Resident Evil 7

    8. Wolfenstein (wasn't a huge fan)

    9. Mario

    10. Nioh

@kobeandodom: PUBG is only out today officially so wouldn't be fair to add it to the list. Also you should remove games you didn't enjoy.

I couldn't really think of a game to put over them (blanked) but I do know those games seem to be enjoyed so I didn't want to be a total hater lol.

I have never been into Assassin's Creed (honestly not a huge single player guy these days) but Assassin's Creed looks amazing.

@thedud3abides: Sunshine was pants, the only Mario game that I got bored of! Divinity should be higher though.

"Top 3 are classics of a generation, of a decade, of all gaming yet." Of a computer generation, yes. Decade and all time is a bit of a stretch.

@totneschap: I think Sunshine is pretty perfect way to describe these. That game also was like the makers were reading a book called "How to make a video game"

The levels aren't huge, but they're adequate. There's almost no plot, but just enough monologues to have some narrative. The jumping and running is very by-the-book, but they added the spray gun as a small twist. The game has a bunch of levels with simple initial goal, but the 100% takes a little while without being tedious. The enemies have no A.I., but they're charming enough. The game looks clear, has some adequate sounds and it's very had to find glitches or technical issues.

On one hand I can see why someone would give Sunshine a 10/10. But I can see why someone would rate it a 8, 6 or even maybe 4. Depends all on perspective. I haven't played Odyssey, but it looks very similar. Personally, even if Skyrim had three times more glitches I'd still find it superior because there are a ton of things I love. While Sunshine isn't terrible, I can't say there's anything that I love about it.

Game of the year is split between HZD & Persona 5 then Zelda for me. but I have to ask what is/was wrong with AC Origins ? why no mention of it what so ever ? I thought the campaign is fulfilling, side quests are mostly repetitive but good non the less, there are tons of activities, challenges, arenas and so on to top a v good fighting mechs. Nioh was great too deserves at least an honorable mention.

@berrlett: A lot of the mainstream assassinations involve you directly facing the opponent in open combat for no good reason. Still can't fight with the hidden-blade. Still can't unequip weapons or gear. There technically wasn't a good working cover-system, and the story was bland and even laughable at some points, and not in a good way. Crafting was retarded because you couldn't craft on the go, like in HZD. Costumes and outfits were largely copy-pasted in a small variety of colors, instead of just adding a dye-system. This made it seem like there were more outfits then there really were.

ACO offers a humungous open area for you to explore in, and I even had a few memorable experiences, but everything happening inside the country is largely repetitious. The huge amount of soldier camps, for instance, feels like a chore to clear out rather than a special challenge, especially if you're geared towards stealth; clearing them is far too easy anyway. The different stories were fun, but I didn't come close to finishing all of them.

I didn't even finish the game for a variety of reasons, but the number one reason - the straw that killed the emersion and broke the camel's back was near the ending (or what I thought was near the ending) Aya faces one of the last targets (forgot his name) in open combat, instead of formulating a plan to assassinate from the shadows. This did me in. Perhaps it was all the fatigue mounting up, but I couldn't bring myself to finish it at this point, especially considering they had just formed the Creed not too long ago. It made zero sense to me, and I realized what I was playing did little in the way of giving you options to take these high profile targets out silently. This is supposed to be Assassin's Creed afterall. Needless to say, I turned my copy in. I spent more time playing Unity than Origins, and that's saying a lot.

Sure RE7 was a fresh start but it doesn't deserve to be in top 10 in my opinion especially given how it got quite boring towards the end. Moreover, it's a little insulting to see it above games like DOS2.
