Game Of Thrones Ending: All Characters Who Died In Season 8 (Episode 6 Update)

Game of Thrones has come to an end, and at last, the show won't be able to kill any more beloved characters, often in brutal and horrific ways. It wouldn't be Game of Thrones without a deadly sendoff, though, and while things took a bit to ramp up in the final season, it ended being plenty lethal. Enormous Season 8 spoilers ahead.

While many expected more major characters to die defending Winterfell against the Night King and his army, Episode 5, "The Bells,' made up for the lack of major deaths by dealing with a whole bunch of characters. When Daenerys went to King's Landing to take the Iron Throne, she made sure that a whole lot of people didn't live to see her take power. The total casualty count would have been much lower had it not been for Dany's descent into madness as she torched the city. At that point, it was clear she wouldn't break the wheel, as she once set out to do. Then again, she wasn't the only one with power.

Between the battle with the dead, the destruction at King's Landing, and the aftermath of its sacking, we lost a lot of characters in the final season. Here's the complete tally of all the deaths in Season 8.

The first death of the season happened in the premiere, rather than at the Battle of Winterfell. Little Ned Umber, the heir to House Umber and Last Hearth, was lost when the army of the dead marched down from the Wall. His tragic death turned horrible when Edd, Tormund, and Beric discovered him spiked to a wall--and then he turned into a wight.

Though they get equipped with flaming swords courtesy of Melisandre, the Dothraki get cleaned out by the Night King's army immediately, in one of the most frightening sequences of the battle.

Our last real link to the Night's Watch took a blade to the back as he saved Samwell Tarly from getting overrun by wights.

One of the most heroic deaths of the episode belonged to little Lady Lyanna Mormont of Bear Island. Though she was crushed by the incredible power of a zombie giant, she managed to shove a dragonglass dagger through its eye, taking out one of the most powerful of the Night King's combatants.

Beric's many resurrections at the hands of the Lord of Light (and Thoros of Myr) culminated in him holding of wights to save Arya Stark's life. As Melisandre put it, his final purpose was fulfilled.

After taking Winterfell from the Starks, killing his former friends, and threatening Bran earlier in the season, Theon made up for his past atrocities and mistakes by sacrificing himself against the Night King to protect Bran.

Jorah has been a tragic figure for a long time thanks to his unrequited love for Daenerys. He met his heroic end protecting his queen against an onslaught of undead, surviving just long enough to see her safe.

Though he nearly claimed victory, the Night King didn't account for one thing: Arya Stark showing up with her Valyrian steel dagger and taking him down with the skills she accumulated throughout the entire series.

The Red Woman Melisandre has been pulling strings in preparation for the final battle against the Night King throughout the entire show. She finally fulfilled that purpose by giving Arya a hint about her own role in the battle, and when it was all over, she allowed herself to succumb to death outside the gates of Winterfell.

Rhaegal took a beating in the Battle of Winterfell when he fought the wight version of his brother Viserion in mid-air. Rhaegal managed to escape that fight, but was seriously injured and was pretty much taken out of the battle after that, leaving Jon Snow on his own on the ground. Though Rhaegal survived that battle, he was felled near Dragonstone when Euron Greyjoy and the Iron Fleet ambushed Daenerys with Qyburn's scorpions, the giant dragon-killing crossbows. That leaves Daenerys with just the one dragon, and Cersei's anti-air weapons seem like they might keep Drogon out of the fight entirely.

Missandei has basically become Daenerys's best friend since the queen freed the translator from slavery. After that, Missandei also served as one of Daenerys's most trusted advisers, and she later fell in love with Grey Worm. Losing Missandei to Cersei in such a public and awful way seems like it's messing with Daenerys's head just as much as losing Rhaegal did--and Grey Worm is obviously going to be out for revenge. Those emotions seem primed to either make Daenerys and her forces come back with a vengeance, or to make another costly mistake against Cersei.

The longer Season 7 and Season 8 went on, the more Daenerys's closest advisers and supporters started to doubt that she would make a good queen--but none more than Varys. When he started talking about putting Jon Snow on the Iron Throne, though, Varys sealed his fate. As soon as Dany got wind of Varys's flickering loyalty, she made good on her promise to execute him if he betrayed her, with dragon fire.

The leader of the Golden Company didn't even get to draw a sword--or say a line--before he bought it as he stood ready to defend King's Landing. Drogon and dragon fire dealt with Cersei's new forces, plus her dragon-killing scorpions, the Iron Fleet, and a bunch of civilians.

The Iron Fleet might have gotten the drop on Rhaegal, bringing Daenerys's dragon count down to just one, but they couldn't take down Drogon in a straight fight. Euron escaped blowing up with his ship and managed to make it to the shore of King's Landing, then decided to engage Jaime Lannister in a battle to the death for, uh, unknown reasons. Jaime emerged victorious, stabbing Euron in the gut, but he died happy knowing that he'd mortally wounded Jaime.

Game of Thrones dished out a fitting end for Qyburn, Cersei's Hand of the Queen. As the Red Keep collapsed on the heads of the queensguard, Qyburn made the mistake of getting in Ser Gregor Clegane's face. The Mountain responded by dashing Qyburn's skull against a nearby wall. Qyburn might have brought Gregor back from the dead, but that didn't earn him much loyalty when it came time for Cleganebowl.

The Hound has gone through a lot over the years, from his weird kidnapper-slash-friendship with Arya Stark, to his attempt at reforming himself without violence, and his turn fighting with the Brotherhood Without Banners. In the end, though, he couldn't escape his overpowering need for revenge against his brother, the Mountain. Sandor found Gregor in the Red Keep and finally managed to end him--but it cost Sandor his life.

When he saved The Mountain from death after he was poisoned by Oberyn Martell, Qyburn made Gregor Clegane damn near unkillable--but that doesn't stop his brother Sandor from trying. In the end, a sword through the chest and a dagger through the skull weren't enough to stop the Mountain. It took a dive off the Red Keep into raging dragon fire with his brother Sandor to finally bring him down.

Though he tried to become a better person and leave his sister behind, in the end, Jaime couldn't help but return to Cersei. On his way, he managed to kill Euron Greyjoy despite the loss of his right hand, but took a stab wound that likely would have killed him. Jaime never got a chance to bleed to death, though. Instead, he died in Cersei's arms as the Red Keep's dungeon collapsed around them.

Cersei thought she'd crush all her enemies, but thanks to her murderous arrogance, she found herself facing down Daenerys and Drogon as they ravaged King's Landing. In the end, she and Jaime weren't able to escape what Cersei had brought on House Lannister--they died in the dungeon as the structure collapsed under Drogon's assault, burying them together.

After burning King's Landing, Daenerys became the tyrant she'd always talked about deposing, and that turned her most trusted advisers and allies against her. Tyrion Lannister disgustedly resigned his post as Hand of the Queen (before getting arrested for treason), and in the end, Jon Snow acted for the good of the realm. He stabbed Daenerys in the heart with his dagger, making her the show's final (and for many, most gutting) death.
