Dogs are man's best friend, and you have a chance to seek out your loyal companion in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. The question is: How far would you go for your doggo, especially since you're about to embark on a ridiculous doozy of a quest chain. Here's our guide on how to find Mutt in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
Where to find Mutt in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - Dog companion guide
At the start of the campaign, Henry is separated from his dog companion Mutt. Don't worry, though, because you'll see him down the line. Specifically, after events transpire in the village of Troskowitz, Henry will talk about his pup's whereabouts. This causes the "Mutt" side quest to appear in your journal tab.
Note 1: It's up to you when you want to tackle the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Mutt quest. However, because this mission takes you all across the Bohemian countryside, we recommend getting a horse mount first. This should save you a bit of time since you won't have to roam around on foot.
Note 2: We also recommend bringing a bow or a crossbow, as well as either weapon's required ammo--i.e. arrows or bolts, respectively. You can get these weapons for free by stealing from the chests in the carpenter NPC's house, which is just across the tavern in Troskowitz.
Mutt: Initial quest steps
If you want to find Mutt in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, you need to head to the marked location while tracking the quest. The area itself is due west of Bozhena the herbalist's hut.
Once you arrive, you'll see a lone bandit who's skinning an animal. Take out this fella and go to Bozhena's hut. The herbalist woman has no idea where your dog might be, but you could ask a fisherman further north or the tavern people to the east.
Mutt: The shepherd and the wolves
After asking the townsfolk, you're directed to the hut of a shepherd named Siegfried. He won't be able to offer any help because he's got problems of his own: wolves.
Siegfried mentions that there's an area to the east where you can leave bait for the wolves. Alternatively, you can lure one of his sheep, Ignatius, to the desired spot. Here's what you need to do:
- Don't bother having Ignatius tag along since that's going to take a while.
- Instead, assuming you don't have any meat in your inventory, just butcher any of Ignatius' sheep to obtain some mutton. If you do this while Ignatius is asleep, he won't even discover what you've done.
- Go to the marked location and drop the meat as bait. Another marked location should appear just past the bushes. Walk toward it and click on the button prompt to trigger a cutscene.
- Once the wolf pack is back--causing mass destruction--start attacking them with your weapon. Try to block and counter as these beasts try to bite you. Most importantly: Don't turn your back on the wolf pack. You might wind up in a body bag.
After killing or causing the wolves to scamper away, return to Siegfried. To no one's surprise, he also doesn't know where your dog is, but another fellah might: Vostatek the gamekeeper.
Lackey: Vostatek and Vitek
The Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Mutt side quest wants to test your patience, as you learn that Vostatek is missing. Here's what you need to do:
- Talk to Vostatek's wife, Zlata. This leads to a different side quest called Lackey. At this point, you should track the Lackey quest, too.
- Vostatek's location will be hinted at, but don't bother exploring due to the wide radius on the map.
- Instead, head to where Vitek is. The son of Vostatek wants nothing to do with his alcoholic dad, but you can convince him to mention the gamekeeper's location.
Lackey: Carrying Vostatek around
The next task in the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Lackey quest leads you to Vostatek. Upon arriving at the marked location, you'll see that Vostatek is hanging from a tree branch, while several wolves crowd around waiting for their next meal. Once you've taken care of the creatures, Vostatek will fall down and break his leg.
From here, you need to carry Vostatek to specific landmarks in the vicinity:
- An old, gnarled tree trunk to the east.
- An anthill further east from the tree trunk.
- Vostatek will say that you need to carry him back to the tavern. Don't run to town immediately since Vostatek is only joking.
- Next, head north-northeast until you see a tree that's been cleaved in two.
- Follow the dirt path until you see a cairn (i.e. stack of round stones).
- Vostatek's camp is just past that point.
Drop Vostatek on the mattress at his camp and give him some water from the barrel. He'll then tell you about his missing horse, Pipek.
Lackey: Pipek and the bandit camp cheese
Follow the dirt road while inspecting markings and accessories left behind by the bandits. Eventually, you'll arrive at the bandit camp, which will trigger an autosave.
Now, this part of the Lackey quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a bit tricky. There's a good chance that you're low-leveled or undergeared (maybe even both). Trying to fight five bandits on your own is going to be a tall task. The good news is that there's a pretty effective cheese/exploit. Hopefully, you brought a bow or crossbow with you for this encounter.
In any case, here's what you need to do:
- From the spot where you triggered the autosave, walk forward and to the right along the sloping path. Try not to get spotted by hostiles.
- Climb up the rocks until you're able to reach one that's jutting out from the edge. The large rock is steep enough--Henry can climb on top of it by jumping, but enemies won't be able to since they can't jump at all.
- Use your ranged weapon to hit any of the enemies down below and make sure that they come running toward your location.
- Two of these bandits also use bows, so go ahead and snipe them. As for the rest, they only wield melee weapons and, since they can't jump, they'll only stare at you as you land well-placed headshots.
Once all your foes have been defeated, loot their corpses to receive a bunch of gear and accessories. You can also use the keys to unlock the chests in the camp and inside the small cavern.
When you're done, mount up on the black horse, Pipek, and ride it back to Vostatek's camp. He'll thank you for your efforts and the two of you will travel to his home. He also offers you free lodgings, allowing you to sleep in a bed, which heals your character and creates a save file. Perhaps most importantly, he'll tell you where to find Mutt.
Mutt: The wolves' den
After a long and arduous journey, it's finally time to be reunited with your long-lost dog companion in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Go to the marked location and watch the cutscene. Once that's done, kill or scare away the wolf pack. Mutt will then join Henry for good.
Mutt's abilities and the Houndmaster perks
Now that you've found Mutt in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, you might be asking yourself what he could actually do. Well, apart from being a cuddly-wuddly wittle woggo, he can:
- Attack enemies with the "Sic" command.
- Search for places of interest and wild game.
- Bark to distract NPCs.
- Add a boost to your Charisma, as well as Presence and Intimidation checks.
Mutt's perks can be found in the Houndmaster skill in the Player tab/menu. You steadily gain XP for this skill if you have Mutt with you--which is almost all the time--so even instances where Mutt just roams around and barks are enough to grant a bit of XP.
How to increase Mutt's obedience
While dogs are lovable creatures, Mutt's obedience in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is still affected by a variety of factors. Here are some important tidbits to remember:
- You can find Mutt's obedience level under the Player: Sidekicks tab in your menu.
- Mutt's obedience will drop if he gets attacked in combat. It also decreases if you haven't fed him in a while.
- If Mutt's obedience value is too low, he won't even follow your commands. Worse, he'll incessantly bark at everyone and everything, which can be frustrating if you're trying to sneak around. If this occurs, you could bring him to a farther location, then choose the "Stay" command so he doesn't interfere with your tasks.
- You can raise Mutt's obedience by feeding and petting him.
- You can also acquire the Houndmaster: Faithful Companion perk so that Mutt's obedience level decreases slower.
That does it for our guide on how to find Mutt in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. We told you this was gonna be a doozy side quest. But, hey, perhaps it's worth it since you have man's best friend with you now. For Henry's other animal companion, you could check our horse mount guide.
