You'll face countless challenges in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. At times, you could find yourself facing formidable champions or groups of bandits. In other instances, you could choose the wrong reply when chatting with NPCs or guards, leading to terrible consequences. As such, you probably want to ensure that you have a handy file that you can load just to be on the safe side. Here's our guide on how to save in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
How to save in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - Manual saves and autosaves guide
Let's get this out of the way: Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, much like the original game, has one of the most restrictive save systems around. Sure, we can talk about intentional friction all day, but there are moments when this feature actually cause inconveniences. That's why our guide discusses all the methods that trigger a game save.
Quest progression autosaves
Progression tends to trigger autosaves, but the system itself is quite unreliable. Basically, there's an autosave whenever you begin or conclude quests. In between those sections, there might be autosaves when you're done with certain objectives.
However, you won't be able to tell beforehand when these instances occur. In a few situations, you might handle multiple tasks or do several actions, and yet the autosave won't happen until you reach a certain point. Any grave mistake or, worse, a crash/freeze, could set you back if you reload.
Sleeping in a bed that you own
You can save in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 by sleeping in a bed that you own. Here are a few tidbits to remember:
- Sleeping in any type of bed for a few hours tends to heal your character.
- At certain parts of the campaign, some NPCs offer accommodation at no expense. These rooms also have a storage chest so you can manage your inventory/carry weight.
- Likewise, you can talk to tavern owners and innkeepers that offer permanent lodgings. The cost is usually around 50 Groschen. In some cases, you're only given a straw mat in the barn. There's no storage chest, but at least you'd be able to save your game.
- Sleeping in beds that you don't own (i.e. you're just trespassing in someone's home) still heals your character. Unfortunately, this action doesn't trigger a save.
Bathhouses
Some villages and cities have bathhouse establishments. Talk to the proprietor and select any of the options--i.e. bathe Henry and wash his clothes, or ask for "extra service" for a brief romantic tryst with the ladies. These options trigger a save.
Savior Schnapps
The most reliable Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 manual save method involves the use of Savior Schnapps. These are consumable potions that you can either purchase or brew. As long as you have one in your inventory, regardless of the potion quality, the "Save Game" option should be available whenever you pause.
Fast travel between regions
Upon reaching the game's second major arc, you'll be able to fast travel between regions--i.e. back and forth Bohemian Paradise/Trosky and Suchdol/Kuttenberg. Talking to the coachman NPC automatically creates a save file, even before you pay the fee.
Save & Quit option
Last but not least, there's also the "Save & Quit" option, which you can see whenever you pause the game. Yes, it's pretty much a manual save method as well, but there are some downsides:
- Selecting this option automatically closes the game and you need to relaunch it. This is definitely a hassle, especially if you just want to select a different dialogue response during segments.
- Only one "Save & Quit" file can exist at any given time. Choosing this option always overwrites the previous file.
That does it for our guide on how to save in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Yes, the system is a bit restrictive, so we hope you can manage as you continue further into the campaign.
