The Sony Platinum wireless headset for PlayStation 4 features an over-the-ear design, 7.1 virtual surround sound, and an integrated microphone. The package comes with a travel bag, USB signal receiver, micro-USB charging cable, and 3.5mm audio cable.
The headset has a polished aluminum frame with a thick rubber headband. Both earpieces adjust on independent slides situated between the earpieces and the frame. The headset itself feels like a solid piece of hardware without too many moving parts.
The headset is fairly flexible and feels durable, making it easy to put on and set down without worry of damage. The earpieces do not swivel but there are elbows that allow the earpieces to fold into the frame. When folded inward, the headset easily slides into the travel bag.
There are several on-the-fly control features on the headset itself. The headset can be synced and switched between two separate wireless channels. There is also volume up/down and a mute button.
Users can activate 3D audio and virtual surround sound on the spot. Several games will feature 3D audio, and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End already has support patched in the game. This can make for a more detailed soundstage; higher precision of the direction and depth of sound effects.
Users can also control the balance of in-game audio and voice chat volume. The microphone is well hidden, which sits just under the left earpiece. The dual microphone design is said to help pick up vocals while cancelling ambient noise.
The inner earpieces have a slanted contour to rest flush to the user’s ears. However, those with bigger ears may feel the inner drivers press against their ears which may lead to discomfort. While the ear pads look dense from the leather upholstery, the actual padding is quite shallow, though still comfortable to wear.
The USB receiver is required to use the headset. The headset charges through micro-USB just like the DualShock 4, and comes with the packaged. The headset can also be used through a 3.5mm jack.
The 3.5mm jack allows you to plug the headset straight into your controller, use with a mobile device, or any thing with a 3.5mm port. Both the USB and audio jack are on the left earpiece.
The Sony Platinum Wireless headset for PlayStation 4 retails for $160 USD and $200 CAD. It was made available for purchase on January 12, 2016. Stay tuned for our full review of the headset to find out how it performs.
