Several months into 2024, it has been an interesting year for Sony and its PlayStation division. We've seen several exclusives launch on the PS5, but games like Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth have been developed by third-party studios instead of Sony's in-house collection of developers. Sony has confirmed that it has "major" projects currently in development, but these won't be released until 2025 at the earliest.
For the rest of the year, third-party studios will be delivering highly anticipated games to PlayStation libraries. Titles like Metaphor: ReFantazio and Assassin's Creed Shadows will be arriving toward the end of the year, Visions of Mana is the first original entry in the RPG series in 15 years, and this year's Call of Duty will be the first under Microsoft's stewardship. Following Summer Game Fest and several other showcases in June, we're also expecting to have even more games to look forward to this year.
While you're waiting for those new releases, you can also check out GameSpot's features on the best RPGs for PS4 and PS5, the best free PS5 games to play right now, and the must-play PS5 titles that are currently available. Or look ahead to everything coming across multiple platforms in our 2024 release dates roundup.
Destiny 2: The Final Shape - June 4
The Final Shape marks the end of a decade-long storyline in the Destiny universe, and expectations are high for Bungie to deliver a fitting finale to the Light and Darkness saga. Delayed to June, The Final Shape will take players into the heart of the enigmatic Traveler, add new Super abilities for all three Guardian subclasses, and will see the fan-favorite character Cayde-6 resurrected. Amidst a turbulent time for Bungie that has seen dozens of employees laid off and allegations of poor leadership, this expansion could be the make-or-break moment for the studio.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance -- June 14
Originally available exclusively for Switch consoles, Atlus is bringing Shin Megami Tensei V to several more consoles in June. This won't just be a regular port on new systems, as this version of the game will contain improved gameplay, several quality-of-life updates, and more demons to encounter. The game's story is also being significantly altered, and Atlus estimates that the two campaigns will take players around 160 hours to complete together.
Still Wakes the Deep -- June 18
Stuck on an oil rig during a particularly nasty storm off the Scottish coast; could things get any worse? It turns out things can and do get much worse for the people trapped aboard that platform, as a hostile entity begins hunting them down. It'll be up to you to survive in the cramped spaces of that structure, but with an unrelenting force hunting you, don't expect to have too many moments to catch your breath in this suspenseful first-person game.
Steamworld Heist 2 -- August 8
The first Steamworld Heist game earned positive reviews for its take on the tactics genre, and for the sequel, the turn-based strategy foundation is getting an upgrade. With a deeper story and even deeper customization, Steamworld Heist 2 is adding to its formula with ship-to-ship combat and a deep dive into exploration.
Star Wars Outlaws -- August 30
2023 was a pretty great year for Star Wars thanks to EA's release of Jedi: Survivor, and this year, it's Ubisoft's turn to visit a galaxy far (far!) away. Set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Outlaws puts you in the scoundrel boots of Kay Vess as she seeks to pull off the heist of the century. The Star Wars underworld has rarely been explored, and as a rogue who doesn't have access to Jedi powers, Vess will have to use her wits to get out of dangerous situations. If diplomacy fails, she can always rely on her blaster to shoot first and ask questions later in this open-worlds Star Wars game.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 -- September 9
Originally meant to launch in 2023, you'll have to wait until September before you can smite the heretical Tyranid swarms in the name of the Emperor. A direct sequel to the 2010 game, Space Marine 2 is being developed by Saber Interactive and is aiming to retain the signature action of the first game as you combine violent warfare with quick-thinking tactics on the battlefield.
Metaphor: ReFantazio -- October 11
A brand-new RPG developed by the team behind Persona 5, Metaphor: ReFantazio shifts the focus away from a Japanese high school and to the distant lands of a fantasy adventure. The king is dead, the throne is yours for the taking, and you'll be embarking on a steampunk road trip to win the hearts and minds of people along the way. Like the Persona games, Metaphor: ReFantazio mixes turn-based combat with an incredibly stylish art direction.
Assassin's Creed Shadows -- November 15
Assassin's Creed fans have been itching to explore Japan for years, and later this year, that dream will come true with the release of Assassin's Creed Shadows. Players will be able to take control of two characters, as they'll switch between the stealth-focused Naoe and the mighty Yasuke--the legendary African samurai who served under the real-life daimyo Oda Nobunaga. Ubisoft says the game will focus on honor and courage, and will feature a non-linear campaign story revolving around tracking down and eliminating targets.
Thank Goodness You're Here -- 2024
One of the more delightfully weird games coming out this year, Thank Goodness You're Here is billed as an absurd comedy "slapformer" set in the bizarre Northern English town of Barnsworth. As a traveling salesman, it's up to you to meet locals, help them with the oddest of jobs, and soak up the sights.
The Alters -- 2024
11 Bit Studios, the developer behind indie hits like This War Of Mine and Frostpunk, is headed to space with its next game. The Alters puts you in the space boots of Jan Dolski, a space explorer who crashes on a hostile planet and finds himself alone on a space station that requires a full crew to operate it. The good news is that thanks to a rare substance called Rapidium, Dolski soon creates alternate versions of himself, and alongside his Alters, he'll work with them to survive on a hostile planet.
Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail - Summer 2024
The future of Final Fantasy 14 looks bright, as the game's next expansion Dawntrail is set to be released in Summer 2024. The marquee features in this expansion are the new job classes, as players can use magical artwork to unleash creative anarchy as the Pictomancer or they can focus on close-range combat with the flexible new Viper class. Fans can also look forward to Final Fantasy 16 and Fall Guys crossovers, an increase to the character level cap, new dungeons, and much more.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater - 2024
Long considered to be the definitive Metal Gear Solid game, this remake of the PS2 classic returns to the Cold War origins of the journey that transformed the legendary soldier Snake into Big Boss. Featuring a handsome audio-visual upgrade alongside updated stealth-action gameplay, Metal Gear Solid Delta is one of the more highly anticipated remakes of the year. And yes, that iconic theme song has been kept intact.
Black Myth Wukong
Details on Black Myth Wukong have been scarce since the Souls-like game was first revealed several years ago, but what is known is that it looks like an exhilarating adaptation of Chinese mythology. As the Monkey King Sun Wukong, players will take on titanic enemies and legions of cannon fodder foes while wielding an arsenal of magical weapons along the way.
Marvel's Wolverine
It has been more than a decade since Wolverine popped his adamantium claws in a solo video game, and at long last, Canada's finest export is getting ready to step into the spotlight once again. Developed by Spider-Man studio Insomniac, details on the game have been kept tightly under wraps--or stolen by brazen hackers before being released online--but Insomniac says that Marvel fans can expect a dark and mature storyline starring the feral mutant.
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach
Details on Death Stranding 2 are slim right now, but if it's anything like the previous game, expect this latest title from Hideo Kojima's studio to be weird and wild. First revealed in 2022, it looks like a new extinction-level event is on the horizon, one born from Kojima's experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Several familiar faces will return for Death Stranding 2, alongside new characters played by Elle Fanning and Shioli Kutsuna.
Fairgame$
The first game from Jade Raymond's Haven Studio, Fairgame$ is billed as a fresh and modern take on the heist genre as players rob from the ultra-rich in an effort to rebalance the scales of society. Beyond a slick CG trailer, very little is known about the competitive multiplayer game so far, but teamwork and creative tactics will be the keys to success, according to Haven.
Silent Hill 2
Blair Witch and Layers of Fear developer Bloober Team has its work cut out for it with its Silent Hill 2 remake, as this unnerving psychological-horror game is still considered to be a masterclass in storytelling. Once again taking on the role of James Sunderland as he confronts the ghosts of his past in the eerie town of Silent Hill, players will have to investigate a seemingly impossible mystery, face off against twisted monsters, and wrestle with their past sins in this remake of the 2001 classic.
GTA 6 - 2025
Few games can dominate discourse like Grand Theft Auto, and when the first official look at the game debuted in late 2023, Rockstar practically took over the internet with a single trailer. Returning to the sunny shores of Vice City--and the state of Leonida--Rockstar is keeping additional details on the game a secret for now, but there are still numerous secrets, nods to previous games, and other tantalizing threads to explore in the first trailer ahead of the game's currently scheduled release date of 2025.
Untitled Call of Duty game
Wind blows, rain falls, and a new Call of Duty game arrives every year. While nothing has been confirmed yet for Call of Duty 2024, reports indicate that this year's game will be the next entry in the Black Ops series and it's believed that the story could take place, at least in part, during the Gulf War. The other big question regarding this year's Call of Duty is if it will be available as a day-one Xbox Game Pass title, as Microsoft is reportedly having internal debates about bringing Call of Duty to its subscription service.
John Carpenter's Toxic Commando
Inspired by the legend behind several of the best action and horror movies of the '80s, John Carpenter's Toxic Commando will pit you against legions of the undead. Not too many details have been revealed on this game since it was first announced last year, but it has been confirmed that the game is being developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment. As for the action? Expect something that has Carpenter's influence all over it, as you'll be fighting gnarly zombies and other abominations in this first-person horror-shooter.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Riding onto consoles and PC later this year, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 picks up directly after the events of the 2018 game as feudal warrior Henry of Skalitz seeks to avenge his loved ones. Said revenge in this medieval RPG will require you to master the blade and other weapons in your fight against the armies of Hungary, and like the first game, you can expect a high level of historical authenticity in this adventure. Choices will affect how the story unfolds and you can expect the world of Bohemia to be full of busy cities, formidable castles, and more.
The Casting of Frank Stone
The Dead by Daylight universe is set to expand with a new spin-off focused on one of its most infamous characters, the sadistic killer Frank Stone. Developed by Until Dawn and Dark Pictures studio Supermassive Games, The Casting of Frank Stone will see players delve into the depths of an Oregon steel mill and discover the gruesome crimes of the infamous murderer. Like the Until Dawn games, you can expect a cinematic experience, branching paths in the story, and brutal twists in the tale.
The First Descendant
Currently scheduled for a Summer 2024 release, Nexon's The First Descendant is set in Albion, an alien world where humanity finds itself under siege by the forces of The Vulgus. As the last line of defense on the continent of Ingris, it's up to you and your fellow players to save the day and loot your way to success with shinier gear for tougher battles. After several betas, progress on The First Descendant has seen a number of substantial updates such as quality-of-life improvements, gameplay tweaks, and several graphical upgrades.
The Wolf Among Us 2
After several years of development--and recent layoffs at Telltale Games--The Wolf Among Us 2 is still being worked on. In-progress shots from the current build were shown off in April, revealing a new look at Bigby Wolf and several other Fabletown residents. This will be an episodic game set before the events of the Fables comic book series, but with the entire season is being developed as one project, fans can expect episodes to be released roughly three weeks apart across two months once a release date has been finalized.
Until Dawn remake
A new version of Until Dawn is headed to PS5 and PC this year with several significant graphical and gameplay enhancements. Rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, Supermassive says it has added improved animations, new locations to explore, more collectibles, and an expanded story. There are also more subtle changes lurking about in this version, like a broader cinematic tonal color palette, more contextual character animations, and even a new score to help give you goosebumps.
Visions of Mana
While the Mana series has been kept alive with a few remakes, it has been 15 years since the last original entry in that franchise. That long wait is coming to an end, and for fans of Square Enix's action-RPG series, Visions of Mana makes a solid first impression. With a combo of flexible combat and colorful visuals, Visions of Mana adds interesting wrinkles to its classic RPG foundation through its versatile class system.
