It's time for Venom's last dance, which may be sad for some fans of the movies. It's time to cheer up, though, because the first trailer for Venom: The Last dance was released, and it's got a lot going on. Tom Hardy returns as Venom for a third time--a fourth if you count his brief appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home--and this time around, there are more symbiotes than ever.
Directed by Kelly Marcel and written by Marvel and Tom Hardy, this will be the last film in the Venom trilogy for Hardy as the titular anti-hero. Peggy Lu rejoins the cast as convenient store owner Mrs. Chen, Cristo Fernández returns from his Spider-Man: No Way Home stint as a hotel resort bartender, and then there's a slew of familiar faces joining the case, but we don't know their character's names. This includes Juno Temple, Stephen Graham, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Clark Backo, and Ivo Nandi.
Sony's Marvel movies haven't done exceptionally well in the box office--outside of Venom, the MCU Spider-man releases, and the Spider-Verse movies. The first Venom movie brought in $856 million worldwide and Venom: Let There Be Carnage grossed $506 million world wide, according to Box Office Mojo.
With Venom: The Last Dance arriving this fall, the new trailer offers a bit more for fans to chew on--and it's not just bad guys' heads. So we're going through the trailer, piece-by-piece to find out what's going on in the movies, and if there are connections to the stories contained within the pages of Marvel Comics books. Believe it or not, there's a lot of backstory to Venom and the symbiotes within Marvel that most people don't know about. So, let's get going and figure out what's going on in Venom: The Last Dance.
Venom: The Last Dance hits theaters October 25, 2024.
1. Quick update on Eddie
The opening shot of the trailer sees Eddie Brock walking through a town in Mexico.
During the mid-credit scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Eddie was transported to the MCU--the real one, not the Sony one--as he was staying at a hotel in Mexico. Then, during the mid-credit sequence of Spider-Man, No Way Home, Eddie talked to the resort bartender about all the superheroes in this world and "The Snap." At the end of that sequence, he was transported away again--presumably back to his homeworld.
The trailer shows the movie picks back up with Eddie still in Mexico. We're assuming he's back in his universe, considering the events of the rest of the trailer. Eddie is still wearing the same clothes, so this could even be moments after the mid-credit scene from Let There Be Carnage.
2. Dog lover
Eddie finds himself in a room filled with locked up dogs, and he's confronted by a group of bad guys. This is most likely a dog fighting ring that Eddie accidentally discovered or he and Venom were investigating. Most likely, it's the latter.
Regardless, Eddie warns the group he's "giving them a chance"--probably to stop what they're doing.
3. We are Venom
Typically, in the comics, Eddie and Venom say, "We are Venom," at the same time, or Venom says that on his own. Yes, it still says "we" in every case. Here, however, Eddie and Venom are having a tough time lining their voices up together. It takes them a minute to get it squared away.
4. Off with their heads
Venom eats the heads of the bad guys, and exclaims that it's delicious. Eddie stumbles away, followed by a group of dogs, and says, "I need a Tylenol." Actually, it's really hard to make out the last word, but it sounds like Tylenol. Even the closed captioning misses that work too.
5. It's totally possible
Ted Lasso star Juno Temple is headed to the Sony-MCU, and while we don't know the name of her character, yet, we do know she's some sort of scientist studying aliens for a military group. We hear her voice saying, "We always knew it was impossible. That we were alone in the universe. And it's our job to make sure that remains a secret."
It feels like those three sentences are chopped together from separate things her character says.
During this time, we get a shot of a military camp and what looks like to be a few symbiotes trapped by lights. It's most-likely sonic devices, as that's one of their weaknesses--along with fire.
6. Here's where it gets confusing
Ted Lasso's Cristo Fernández reprises his role of "Resort Bartender" from Spider-Man: No Way Home. Chiwetel Ejiofor is there, capturing the symbiote piece that fell off of Venom during that scene. However, that symbiote piece that fell off of Eddie happened on Earth-616, the main MCU, and Ejiofor's alien task force (that's what we're assuming they are) is in that universe collecting a sample. But if the movie takes place in Sony's MCU, why is Ejiofor there?
Obviously--as well as "hopefully"--the movie will have an explanation for this. But until then, let's all make educated guesses as to what's going on.
7. I always feel like…
Eddie is captured on CCTV footage. Considering that Eddie/Venom is a known entity in this universe, and Eddie is hiding out in Mexico, he's probably wanted on some level. This quick shot lets us know that someone is after him--most likely, the previously mentioned alien task force that we don't know the name of yet.
8. Maybe these are Sym-Soldiers
Ejiofor's character is leading this group of soldiers, All of the soldier's faces are covered. Looking through the history of Marvel, there is no real notable military group tasked with hunting down Venom, that aren't symbiotes themselves.
That brings us to the Sym-Soldiers. This might be a leap, but considering all the soldier's faces are hidden and the trapped symbiotes mentioned earlier, it wouldn't be too far off to say these soldiers could be the group in question.
Quick history: During the Vietnam War, there was a new super-soldier group created by Project S.H.I.E.L.D. Using pieces of the symbiote/dragon hybrid known as Grendal, its DNA was infused with humans to create a new breed of super-soldier. However, this first run led to the soldiers becoming corrupted. Years later, the project was rebooted. Venom was captured, and it was bonded with Peter Parker's high school bully, Flash Thompson, during this new run of Sym-Soldiers. Flash took on the name Agent Venom during this time.
That's a lot to pack in, but based on what we've seen so far, it makes a little bit of sense.
9. Nothing but pain
The symbiotes have two main weaknesses: sound and fire. As these soldiers chase Venom down, they find themselves in a river. It looks like Venom is being electrocuted by the weapons the soldiers are holding, but it's more-than-likely that these are high-powered, directional sonic weapons because Venom looks like he's in a lot of pain.
10. Mrs. Chen is back
Eddie/Venom has a close relationship with Mrs. Chen, who we were introduced to in the first Venom movie. Mrs. Chen owns a convenience store in San Francisco and Venom saved her. Since then, they've become friends. The two reunite in Las Vegas, and Mrs. Chen is excited to see him. She also dances with Venom in Vegas.
11. This guy gets captured
At some point, Ejiofor's character's group gets a hold of this unknown person, played by Stephen Graham. It is reasonable to say they are running tests on him, like using sound waves on Venom to cause it pain. Is this how the group gets access to the symbiotes? Is this how the assumed Sym-Soldier group begins, if that's the story being told?
12. Grendel?
We're about to lean hard into the Sym-Soldiers theory. The group originally got access to the symbiotes by way of a dragon binded with a symbiote called Grendel. This may be Grendel. It may be a Earthly-being bonded with a symbiote. It could be one of the many symbiote dragons that exist in the Marvel Comics stories. Regardless, Grendel and maybe even these symbiote dragons have a direct connection to the Sym-Soldiers.
Also, these dragons were created by Knull--a space god known as a Celestial--who created life out of darkness, which ended up becoming the symbiote race.
13. Homecoming… not the Spider-Man one
There's a shot of what looks like meteors headed to Earth. Venom says, "Eddie, my home has found us."
The previously mentioned Knull imprisoned the symbiotes on the planet Klyntar, after they rebelled against the space god. However, it seems they escaped and are headed to Earth--if they're going into the deeper storyline from Marvel Comics.
Regardless of that backstory, the symbiotes are on their way, and Venom will have to fight them off.
14. This guy is a bit creepy
The man being tortured earlier is still captured. He floats to the front of his cell and says, "As long as Venom lives, everyone, everything, will end."
Obviously, these other symbiotes really want Venom dead. But why? Our guess is that Venom is a traitor to the rest of the other symbiotes.
15. Venom Horse
Nothing to really add to this scene. Seeing Venom bonded with a horse is just pretty awesome.
