WandaVision: Everything We Know About The Weirdest New Disney+ MCU Show

Let's be honest: The MCU's Phase 4 plans did not pan out the way anyone expected, thanks to major delays and schedule shifts due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The release date for WandaVision has jumped in front of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier to become Disney+'s first MCU TV show.

So what exactly is it? Well, WandaVision, a bizarre, retro-flavored exploration of Scarlet Witch and Vision--who, yeah, definitely died in Avengers: Infinity War and never came back. Something apparently resurrected him (Wanda's "magic" perhaps?) and now the two of them--along with a grown-up Monica Rambeau, the little girl from Captain Marvel--will be living in a very creepy and definitely magically-influenced world that looks and feels a lot like the 1950s.

We've taken the time to gather up what we've been given here for you as we prepare for Disney+'s official launch and the newest era of the MCU.

Like the rest of the MCU Disney+ shows, WandaVision will include all the familiar faces from the big screen, plus some new ones. So far, our confirmed cast for this show is:

• Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo
• Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis
• Kathryn Hahn as "the noisy neighboor," Agatha Harkness

Originally, WandaVision was planned to hit the streaming service in Spring 2021, roughly around the time the Loki Disney+ show launches, but after Shang-Chi, Eternals, and The Falcon & The Winter Soldier. Things have changed, however, thanks to COVID-19, and now WandaVision is set to be the first MCU show on Disney+. It will premiere on January 15, 2021.

The first trailer for the show dropped, and gave us an even closer look at the vintage sitcom weirdness, including some retro costume easter eggs, hints at the possible plot, and first looks at some new faces, like Agatha Harkness.

Glimpsed briefly in the trailer are Wanda and Vision's twin children, who are two complicated pieces of their comic book history. It's likely the twins are Billy and Tommy, who grow up to become Wiccan and Speed, two heroes in their own right. But their stories are dense and full of comic book nonsense, so new takes are certainly possible.

In the comics, Billy and Tommy were first introduced as Wanda and Vision's children, who Wanda sort-of, kind-of created using her magical abilities. The children were born (with Dr. Strange delivering, no less) and treated with relative normalcy, until it was eventually revealed that they were, in fact, not actually "real." They would simply vanish from existence if Wanda stopped believing in them for too long, or if she became distracted. But they were kind of real, because they were "alive" using fragments of the soul of Mephisto, Marvel's devil--and, well, eventually he came to collect and reabsorbed the real-but-not-real children back into himself.

Wanda was unsurprisingly devastated by this. But things didn't end there. Eventually those soul fragments were reincarnated as two actually real babies, Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd, who would grow up and become Young Avengers.

It's hard to say if we're going to get that version of the story in the show, or something else entirely, but there are definitely two babies present, so it's best to be on the lookout.

Update: Now with the first trailer available, it seems like Vision is just as confused about how he's up and running as we are! Who could have guessed?

No real details regarding how or why his particular resurrection happens have surfaced just yet, but yes, Paul Bettany will be reprising his role as Vision--one of the few heroes who remained decidedly dead after that Infinity War scene. But, given that he's not actually a human, and given that this is a superhero TV show, there is absolutely no shortage of ways Vision could be making a return, so start revving up those theory engines now.

Remember the adorable Monica "Lt. Trouble" Rambeau from Captain Marvel? She was Maria's daughter and Carol's friend back in the 90s. Well, now she's an adult, and apparently, on a collision course with the weird and wonderful world of superheroics all over again.

Assuming WandaVision takes place after Avengers: Endgame in 2023--or perhaps 2025, given its 2021 release date--and the fact that Monica was 11 back in 1995, she ought to be in her early 40s or late 30s. However, Teyonah Parris is only 31, which could potentially indicate either some time-space weirdness (this is a show about Scarlet Witch, remember) or possibly something else entirely that may or may not connect Monica with any number of weird cosmic shenanigans. Over in the comics, Monica has superpowers of her own--she was even Captain Marvel for a time--so anything is possible.

It's been a while since we've seen Darcy Lewis in the MCU--the fan-favorite Thor side-character hasn't been seen since Thor: The Dark World, so it's totally unclear where or how she'll fit into the surreal madness that WandaVision is shaping up to be. But, as confirmed by Kevin Feige at D23 Expo, Kat Dennings will return to reprise the role.

Randall Park will likewise return as Agent Jimmy Woo, who you may remember as Scott's parole officer from Ant-Man & The Wasp. Like Darcy, we have no idea where or how he'll fit into the show, seeing as Ant-Man is the only Avenger he's ever had any contact with, but hey, why not right?

If you're confused about what WandaVision could be, don't worry, you're not alone. Even Paul Bettany is a little lost on this one. During the Hall H panel, he confessed that he's "never been more confused in front of so many people."

Kevin Feige announced at SDCC that WandaVision would officially tie into the second Doctor Strange movie, which would feature Elizabeth Olsen reprising Wanda Maximoff as well as Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange. Marvel Studios has talked at length about the relationship between the shows on Disney+ and the future of the MCU on the big screen, but this is the first time we've had any official confirmation as to just how or when we'll see that taking place.
