A bit too expensive in points, but if you enjoy the Game & Watch games, then this is a decent collection for you.

User Rating: 6.5 | Game & Watch Collection DS
Nintendo has created a rewards program called, Club Nintendo. Through this rewards program you can register your Nintendo consoles and portables, as well as games they have produced like Mario, metroid, animal crossing and others. You will gain points for registering these products, but only after you fill out the survey that each product includes. With those points you can get special rewards, like the game I am reviewing today, the Game & Watch Collection for the Nintendo DS. Game & Watch's collection concept is very simple; it is a collection of three old school classic Game & Watch games that are Oil Panic, Donkey Kong and Green House. The game itself it's pretty expensive when it comes to points, as it requires 800 points. So, is it really worthy to go through all this surveys just for this game? Read on and find out!

The first game on the list is Oil Panic, which features a really nice use of the dual screen of the hardware. In this game, on the top screen, you must collect the drops of oil that are falling. Once you collect three of the drops, you must drop them down to another character that is on the lower screen. The challenge of this however is that once you collect three drops, the drops will still continue to fall so you must quickly drop them down to the other character. Not only that but also the fact the character in the lower screen will be moving from left to right, so you have to pay attention to the direction he is when you drop the oil. If you drop the oil and the character on the lower screen does not pick it up, the oil will fall in a citizen that will make you lose a point and make them mad. The game's concept is really nice, but sometimes the speed of the oil drops falling vs. the character on the lower screen that picks up the oil you drop, can be a bit unbalanced.

The next game featured in the collection is Donkey Kong, which is once again the classic game you have played over and over but this time with no Mario. The game's concept still remains the same by going all the way up to Donkey Kong avoiding the barrels he throws. But it makes it even more complex by adding a crane that you must activate to jump and grab onto it to finish the stage. The difficulty of this crane is that once you activate it, you must wait for the crane to come to you, as it will be constantly moving. So, waiting for the crane plus trying to avoid the barrels at the same time, can be quite a hassle. It still works pretty well for a classic game, but it doesn't have the same level of nostalgia that most can have with the true original Donkey Kong title.

And the last game featured on the collection is Green Panic which was my personal favorite. In this game you must protect four flowers that are being attacked by spiders and serpents by eliminating shooting a gas insecticide. The dual screen again is put to great use has you have two flowers per screen, and on the top you fight serpents, and on the lower one you battle spiders. The speed of the game is much faster than the previous one as enemies go faster and faster and your character attacks and moves very quickly. Unfortunately, the game can get tiring after a while, that you could pretty much end up giving up.

Visually, the games are presented in great clean graphics from the original, no graphical bug or unnecessary additions. The original games were also done with dual screen, so it was great to see these makes an excellent transition as well to the latest dual screen technology that is the Nintendo DS. In terms of its sound, the game's original classic sounds are definitely back here in high quality form. However, some of the game's sounds can be annoying, particularly on Green House. Every time you lose a flower the game makes a really annoying screechy sound that makes you turn down the volume of the DS. But aside from that, if you love that old school retro sound, then it pretty much remains here intact just for you.

Each game features two modes, Game A and B which in other words means Easy and Hard difficulty. You can save your highest score on each game and each difficulty but you cannot share them online. The game also does not include any kind of history of these games or any kind of gallery whatsoever. This can be quite disappointing because most collections do feature a few extras besides just putting all the games together. With the lack of any kind of extra besides the games, there is chance that you probably won't be playing this game that much often.

If you love classic old school games, especially the Game & Watch games, then you will definitely enjoy this collection. But for anyone else that just wanted to receive a free game from Club Nintendo, you are better off waiting for something else to arrive. This is due to the fact that the collection is too small considering how simple these games can be, compared to the amount of points it costs to get it. However, it is definitely a nice treasure for those that like to collect this kind of exclusives old school collections or enjoyed this franchise of the Game & Watch Collection.
