There was a lot of hype surrounding Gears of War, and it has lived up to it.
The story mode is short, I’d say around 9 hours, and it leaves you wanting more, plus the story seems to jump around at times, where you won’t really know what’s going on, or why all of a sudden your doing what your doing. Also the story seems to raise more questions than it answers. The difficulty is easy if you’re a frequent shooter player, even insane is easy, except for a few parts, and the final boss Ramm. The weapons are your typical array, except for the hammer of dawn and torque bow, which can only be used at certain times, and the lancer(machine gun) which has a chainsaw attached to the end. You also get to
Active reload your weapon, which means you get a stronger shot, plus you reload faster,
but if you miss it your weapon jams and it takes longer to reload. But the most important thing is its fun to play, short, but fun.
The sound is fantastic, guns sound nice, the music fits the mood, and the voice acting is top notch. The dialogue is believable and funny at times, and seems to fit each character. Sometimes the background music is too loud to hear the dialogue, which may account for that lost feeling you get during the story.
Now what makes the package worth the price, is the online multiplayer. Its standard 4 vs. 4 matches, you start the level with a lancer, shotgun, pistol, and 1 smoke grenade. Each map has a different variety of weapons; no one map has all the weapons available in the game. The maps are different enough from one another to keep things original, and each round you trade spawn points. It has your average options, ranked and player, and it has 4 game types to choose from (1 is downloadable), you have Warzone where once your down the only options are either getting picked up by your teammates or death, Execution where if you are down you yourself can get back up, and the only way to kill an enemy is by execution, of course headshots and explosions still kill instantaneously, Assassination where the person with the highest score is the leader that round and only he needs to be killed to win the round, and finally you have Annex which is downloadable, where the point is to capture a certain area for a select amount of time. My only complaint about online is the hit detection isn’t always reliable.
Separately neither single nor multiplayer would be worth the price, but together it is well worth it.
