Gears of War is an extremely well-done game, made for the trigger happy by the trigger happy Epic Games.

Epic Games' Gears of War is a brilliantly done over-the-shoulder third-person shooter concerned with Marcus Fenix's battle alongside his COG teammates, against the seemingly-evil forces of the Locust, the primary enemies in the game. Combat is very well done in the context of the game - the guns pack punch, the 'Active Reload' system is well implemented, and the game has a variety of different weapons; although the player will primarily rely on the Lancer, the standard weapon for COG soldiers with a fun little chainsaw on the barrel. The cover system make sure everything flows well - generally Marcus hides behind blocks of concrete or sandbags and steadily takes out the Locust up ahead before moving up and along. This system is regarded as the best in recent memory and many games have attempted to ape it, with mixed results (Resident Evil 5 is an example). The story unfolds across five chapters which I won't go into detail about - however, the tale is an engrossing, meaty one with opportunity aplenty to pop a few Locust on the way. The Locust - cannon fodder for the game - are ugly blighters dressed in metal armour slightly skimpier than Marcus' own. The Locust footsoldiers carry small machine guns devoid of any barrel attachment (thank God) - although the Locust species is very varied and some do not carry any weapons, but rely on brute strength and genetic advantages - such as Nemacysts and Brumaks. The only thing the Locust have in common are that they all live underground; which is the main problem the Locust have with the humans, as you shall see in the game. Gears is set on the ruined planet of Sera - in a beautiful ruined city setting, which somehow remains poignant even among the 'BOOM! HEADSHOT' moments Gears is absolutely drenched in. Another thing Gears is drenched in is blood; this contributes towards its 18 rating, along with some foul language (don't worry, Delta Squad, we understand that you're in the middle of a freakin' warzone).
In conclusion, Gears of War is a great brute of a game which does away with sensitivity and logical thought and focuses instead on finding ammo for its many guns. Buy it, if you like guns and blood.
