Gears of War: Chainsaw guns for everyone! I review the game, Gears of War. Truely a masterpiece: HALOKILLER.
Sera is a planet that knows violence. For many decades, its citizens have been involved in the Pendulum wars. Sera may be galaxies away--or perhaps closer than one may think--but regardless, one day during the civil wars, humanity was attacked from below. On Emergence Day, the Locust hordes crawled out from their underground tunnels to wipe-out mankind. The battle was lost, so in order to not allow the Locust to enjoy the spoils of their victory, the people of Sera scorched the world with chemical and biological weaponry--ruining it forever. The Locust however, were undetterred and humanity finally united in light of their threat. Main character Marcus Fenix was jailed for deserting his army in order to save his father and finds himself locked away in prison. Gears of War chronicles the next 36 hours of Fenix's life.
Gears of War is fantastic. It handles like a dream with its very unique control scheme. It is a third person shooter that functions like an FPS. The "A" button does everything from getting into cover to mantling and diving and also performs the necessary "roadie run" wherein a player ducks and sprints from cover to cover. The AI is brilliant and unpredictable--if you don't seek cover, you will die swiftly. The game becomes a guerilla battle where players toss grenades from behind cover in order to distract enemies for seconds while they reach a strategic point where they may take down the Locust with a quick headshot (my personal favorite).
The game is beautiful. It is almost artistic in that everything in the overworld is tinted gray and hazy--reflecting the sterile, desparate mood of the human forces. The environment truely interacts with players: walls shudder when soldiers slam-into them for cover, sofas explode in a shower of wood and stuffing, Locust blood splatters and stains walls a deadly shade of crimson, and even the dark becomes your enemy as batlike, light-fearing Kryll swarm the night skies.
This cannot be considered a game, but perhaps a work of art--a work of art that you will enjoy for hours on end--and a work of art that will truely spark your wild side--one that will begin to turn the gears of war...
Besides, who can resist a game where your machinegun has a chainsaw attatched?
