Gears of War Review
Even before the Xbox 360 came out Gears of War had been advertised. It looked incredible and was displayed everywhere. Over a year after the 360 launched, the game finally made its debut and it was claimed to be the biggest baddest game to ever hit the console. With raving and hype, most assumed the game was incredible. Many of my friends purchased it and loved it. Minor complaints included a short campaign, and an unclear story. I really cared less, so I one day got it (for Christmas actually).
For one thing, this game is bloody and quite satisfying that way. It is definitely the most detailed game I have ever played. If you literally fire a bullet, your enemy will lose a gallon of blood. I liked this. As I started the campaign, I had a good time. Your guns aren’t just the old average shooter guns that do the same old stuff. These guns were big and had some great use. The gun you start with has a chainsaw attached! It’s insane! When your foe sneaks up to you, hold down B and pop out your chainsaw for an instant kill.
However, don’t assume the game is like Halo where you run around and shoot everything in sight. No, if you do that, you’ll be killed. This is a stealth third person shooter. Combat is intense, and the enemies know what they are doing. You can post behind anything in sight. Whether it is a car, pillar, or a slab from a house, you must post behind it in combat. One of my few complaints has to be the control scheme. You make use of the A button way too much so sometimes Marcus will perform the wrong action. You press A to dash, post behind walls, dive, jump over certain places of cover, and also post off whatever you posted on. This is a minor flaw. Otherwise the controls are tight. The campaign is indeed short too. It took me 5-6 hours to complete. Trust me you’ll breeze through on Casual Difficulty. I started Hardcore and it is a bit more complicated. I like this game because stealth is my kind of game, and you must post a lot. You also get to complete objectives rather than just sprinting from place to place. You have to do all kinds of things such as: Lure a Berserker out, defeat bosses, clear an area, and so on. Multiplayer is awesome in this game. The only thing I dislike is the fact that if you die you are out for the whole round. As far as I know, there isn’t any respawning in Gears of War multiplayer. However, action is intense. It takes the original campaign formula of hiding and then popping out to take a few shots. All of the levels are nice, and pretty big, I might add.
Boss fights are great. You have to figure out how to destroy them, rather than just avoiding their fire and unleashing streams of bullets at them. For example, one boss requires you to wait for it to perform a specific attack. When it does, you must hit it in a certain spot that is vulnerable. You must repeat this process numerous times as the enemy becomes harder to defeat. This is great. However, all in all, bosses are also pretty easy to defeat.
The story is unclear as I mentioned. I understand the fact that you are Marcus Fennix: a person sent to a prison full of locust. Your allies come to free you, and the goal is to reach a train to escape. However, the story isn’t told in much detail, so don’t expect to get a full understanding, no matter how many times you beat the game. The final boss is a bit too simple in Gears also. I was a bit unsatisfied with him especially if you are fighting against him in cooperative mode. You just fire missiles when he is vulnerable and he dies. Sorry for the spoiler but I just had to tell you how easy he was. All in all game-play is incredible. I mean, the game has its many ups, but as all games, it is far from perfect. I just had my few minor complaints that made this game unable to deserve a 10.
The graphics are one thing you got to love about Gears of War. It is the best game by far in this region. The characters all look big and realistic. The enemies all look incredible in their own ways, and they have expressions and looks to make you frightened in some ways. The environment is breathtaking. It is a perfect place for battles. I love it, because it’s not just the same location. You go from a huge city to underground mines. Even the weapons are by far the greatest looking I have ever seen. The enemies also have their own unique and amazing looking weapons. So this game is detailed and graphics deserve a 10 and if possible, even more.
Sound is also amazing. The enemies sound cool and voices are pretty good for the most part. Each character has a voice that suites him or her very well. The explosions and deaths of enemies are satisfying. There are some great selections of music. The music sounds very well fit for a shooting game, so great job for selections.
As for value this game is worth it for sure. You get the greatest graphics and some of the most unbelievable game-play to ever hit a console. It’s a 60 dollar game and it is still worth it. No one that I met has hated this game. You are getting a great deal if you decide to purchase this game. When you play it, I hope you have the same experience I had.
All in all, Gears is a wonderful game that not many can surpass. It has original roots and some of the greatest combat ever. The graphics and sound are excellent, and it has only a few downsides. Do not delay, buy Gears of War today! Hope this helped you guys who read. Peace
