gears is truly a mixed game. it has great graphics and sound, but not enough story and gameplay to back it up. however, in the short amount of time it takes to beat gears, you'll have a blast. you can probably beat it in 8-12 hours. the characters are very interesting (except baird. baird sucks). all the characters range from the tough guy to the arrogant one to the backup guy to the token black dude. the sound is great. lots of voice acting and gun sounds are great. the graphics are amazing and truly a sight to behold. the game isn't as good as everyone says, but its great and worth a purchase. its much better than halo too.
