It's been fourteen years since the ground first rumbled and cracked. Fourteen long, terrifying years since the Locust horde emerged from within the heart of the planet and made their insatiable hunger for destruction and death known to the world. Billions of innocent people-men, women, and children alike-have been slaughtered without predgeduce. Entire cities have been leveled, armies annihalated, and governments toppled. Finally, with no further options, the Coalition of Ordered Governments assembled their arsenal and unleashed hell upon the planet's surface in an attempt to deprive the Locust of whatever it is they wanted. One COG agent known as Marcus Fenix has been imprisoned for a forty-year sentence, but fouteen years into the attack, desperate for help, he has been released to fight alongside his comrades. You play as Marcus, stunning, sawing, and sprinting your way to the supposed end of the war. You start out with your best friend, Dom, also a COG agent, busting you out of prison. A few inches later, you have the choice to either train yourself to using tactics, or getting right to the action. The game can be hard to catch on to, so it's best to train yourself the first time you play. However, it's not until the fights start where your heart will be racing, aiming, ducking, blindfiring, whatever it takes to repel the enemy. As you focus on your strategy of surviving, you'll find eventually that this game is far beyond the average shooter. Just like in real life, if you run out in the middle of a warzone, you'll die. However, if you know what you're doing, you'll make it. It has been found that in some games, it is easy to survive by simply blasting random shots of fire. That is not the case in this game. After about three to four instances where the A button can cause confusion since it is the action button, it will be realized that action-packed madness plus getting used to variety mixes together extremely well. The enviorments in Gears of War are amazing. While they may not be the brightest, hey, it's the Armaggedon; of course everything is going to be terrorized. From a dark and damp prison to a high-speed train, everything fits perfectly into where it should be. Even rain looks like it came from real life. And the characters are the center of the attention in the game, the COG and the Locust, so the graphics are put in mostly to them, like they should be. The scar on Marcus's face tells a dark tale, and the portrayl of the vicious Locust creates one. The sound has been put into the characters completely. Every voice of every character sounds like they were born to have voices like these. You can tell that Marcus is traumatized by his father's death, and takes every section of his anger out on every single drone he sees, from a mile away or at point blank range. The Locust's voices, however, while they are well done, they aren't the most original. The guns aren't the most realistic sounding, either. Overall, Gears of War is a very impressive game, and is currently ranked #1 on the charts. I recommend to all gamers out there to buy this game, and enjoy every single moment of it.
