Gemfire is a strategy game that doesn't require a PhD to play. The continent of Ishmeria is in chaos. The evil King Eselred, possessor of a magical crown that has the ability to summon the dragon, is besieged on all sides by Princes (and in one scenario, a Princess) for the right to rule. Six gems, released from the crown by Princess Robyn, each with the ability to summon a magical warrior, have been dispersed across the land, each pledging his or her self to a noble. Armed with these gems, several states to govern, and an all-knowing advisor, your duty is to conquer the pretenders and set yourself in the throne as King.
Each state is given one turn per month; there are a total of thirty states. Weather changes every three months, affecting the land, crops and people. Forest fires, hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes, heavy snows, plagues, curses, and don't forget there's a war to be fought! Resources fall into gold, food, and soldiers. Land must be cultivated to produce crops, and protection from the environment must be maintained to reduce the danger from natural disasters. The people should be well fed to increase loyalty as well. Actually, there are only a small number of factors to consider, which makes this game so easy to play.
Battles are fought on the field, with or without animation. There are five units to each side, made up of cavalry, archers, two groups of foot soldiers, and, if available, the 5th unit: one of the gem warriors or a hired monster. Each unit can only move so many spaces on this 2D field, in an attempt to capture the enemy's flag (or wipe them out).
The graphics are pretty decent, and the music is better than the sound effects.
All-in-all, a sturdy game worth playing again and again. * * * *
