"Ghost in the Shell" on the PS1 was an interesting interpretation of Masamune Shirow's anime classic. Instead of playing as Major Motoko Kusanagi herself, the player assumed the role of a Fuchikoma AI tank. In the film "Ghost in the Shell," the Fuchikoma tanks were briefly seen, but not nearly to the extent it was utilized in the PS1 game.

Piloting the Fuchikoma tank is a unique experience, as it can adhere itself to any surface, and is just as effective moving along a ceiling as along the ground. A slide function enables the Fuchikoma tank to slide along the floor and up walls on its way to the ceiling. The only disadvantage to being able to climb everything and slide along any surface was that it became very easy to lose track of which way was down. A directional arrow in the upper-right corner aided in determining in which direction the level's goal was located, but it didn't do a very good job differentiating up from down.

"Ghost in the Shell" focused on moving from level to level, defeating enemy soldiers and tanks along the way. To accomplish this, the Fuchikoma tank was well armed with two great weapons. The first were twin machine guns, and the second were rockets. While the machine guns were fixed, the rockets featured a homing ability in which multiple rockets could be targeted at multiple enemies. Even better, as the player progressed through the levels, the number of rockets which could be targeted increased.

Some of the levels were search and destroy, wherein the player maneuvered his Fuchikoma tank through numerous enemies, while others were speed runs, requiring the player to move through waypoints within a stringent time limit.

At the end of each level of "Ghost in the Shell" a cut scene video played which often featured Major Kusanagi and Batou, and provided a nice segue between levels. The music used in the game was engaging, and sounded like the soundtrack of the film.

For a game which had little to do plot wise with the film upon which it was based, "Ghost in the Shell" offered some unique gameplay options which made this game worth looking into.
