Gitaroo Man lives but not neccesarily reborn.
For a PSP title, it truly is excellent and is a must-have for any handheld console owner. The method of playing guitar to defeat enemies is the same as on PS2, you hold whatever button it tells you and move the anologue stick in the direction of the notes. Sounds simple and worked fantastically on PS2, however, due to the PSP's "nub" it is a lot trickier to nail those notes. It doesn't feel as accurate on fluid as the console version but is bearable.
In terms of negative comments there is only one more, and that is that it's very short, you can literally get through it in an afternoon, most of the time trying to complete the ramped up difficulty of the Final Boss. In terms of difficulty it is fairly easy rite up until the final few battles, the vampire, the skeletons and the final twerp at the end.
You're basically playing your music to win the heart of a girl and as stories go, it isn't exactly an episode of Lost. It's straight forward and simple, but that's all it needs to be, anything extra would be a distraction from the actual fun of the game. Music is qwerky, characters a colourful and it all adds up to a genius package. The best boss being the xylyaphone playing skeletons, though tricky, it's a pleasure to play and the tune is fantastically memorable.
Multiplayer is there and works quite well and does serve as a minor distraction but it could have had a bit more depth to it, however, your attention shouldn't stray from single player long enough for you to care.
My final point is why the release? Yes it is a port of an extraordinary PS2 game and yes, it is successful on PSP, but why now? Koei have had the license for a while and havn't done anything major with it since it's original. Is this a sign of a sequel on PS3? Here's me hoping so.
Gitaroo Man Lives! is essential for any PSP owner, it's exciting and still feels fresh, it may be a dusty PS2 port but wipe away the dust and you'll find something dazzling.
