Imagine Resident Evil and Devil May Cry had a baby. Throw in a whole lot of ridiculousness and you have God Hand. This game feels as though it was simply 'slapped together' by some very talented people. You can see a glimmer of genius in it, which eventually gets marred down by some pretty awful attributes.
On one hand God Hand is a lot of fun. The different fighting styles you can purchase offer you the ability to try all sorts of combinations of doing battle with your foes. Some of the more brutal moves in the game can be particularly satisfying.
However, from the get go, God Hand was one big glaring problem: The game-play. You cannot control the camera. If you want to turn around, you either have to run in a wide arch or hit a trigger button to do a complete 180. This is beyond frustrating.
Then there's the story. It makes absolutely no sense. From the beginning I have no idea who the main characters are, where they came from, or why they're doing what their doing. So it's tough to care. It's clear they tried their best to translate whatever the Japanese came up with for a story, but failed miserably. Half the time what the characters are talking about makes no sense whatsoever.
The game also has a very creepy side to it. What is the purpose of the collected slides you can go through in your pause screen of your travel partner in various awkward, 'sexy' poses? Why does the main character need to see pictures of her sleeping with her skirt hiked up? Every cut scene with a woman in it has her moving around like a stripper. Also, within the game itself, all female enemies periodically crawl around on all fours and, if you beat them badly enough, you get to violently spank them as a finish move. The last I checked, this wasn't an option for the male characters. Who thought this was a good idea? If Clover was bought out because of sexism, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised or saddened.
Finally, the difficulty. Most bosses are a cinch. Many of the regular minions are not. I got as far as about half-way through the game and got to a boss battle where you have to fight three former bosses at the same time. After hours and hours of attempts I finally gave up. I, personally, found it to be impossible to beat. I'm been a gamer for nearly 30 years and this wasn't even on hard difficulty.
It's clear that when they were developing this game they were trying to do something different. Although it's like they didn't really care what went into it. Sometimes different can be good, but you have to give a crap. In this instance they rolled the dice and lost. Big time.
Play something else.
