Epic epicness!
The game is an action adventure title with plenty of emphasis on action. You'll be fighting all kinds of monsters that are based from Greek Mythology, like cyclops, Medusa harpies, minotaurs, and many more. The combat is easily the best part of the game. Basic battles with grunt enemies are always tough and exciting and the boss battles are epic. It's a shame that there weren't more of them. The combat consists of pulling of gruesome moves with several weapons and abilities that you'll gain later on as you progress. Certain enemies can be taken down in even more horrible ways by the use of context sensitive attacks when an icon appears above their head. Aside from combat come various puzzles, which are very well executed and some can be pretty challenging. A lot of puzzles usually involve turning something or activating switches, while others can be more gruesome.
The game's levels are rather large in scale and scope, some of the largest I've seen on the PS2. The camera knows which angles provide the best view and can really show off a really cool cinematic feel to it. It also helps that the game is incredibly impressive from a technical and artistic standpoint. The character models look incredible and animations are incredibly fluid and lifelike. The epic orchestral score is simply awe inspiring and certainly makes the action feel even more satisfying and intense. The voice acting is top notch and never falters for a second, as do the sound effects.
PROS:
-KRATOS
-The production values really set the bar high for the PS2
-Combat is always intense and exiting, even against the most basic grunt enemies
-The context sensitive combat mini-games really provide a really over the top gore-ridden experience that I still enjoy
-Fantastic voicework and sound
-Phenomenal musical score
-Really interesting story
-Incredibly lively animation
CONS:
-Only 3 major bosses, which is a real shame.
God Of War was the defining moment in a fantastic series. The series still remains as one of my favorite on the PS2, as one of my all time favorites period.
If you own a PS2 or PS3, I highly recommend this. No one should let this go off their radar. It is definitely worth your hard earned money. It takes a great ancient culture and just makes it more badass in the form of God of War. This is one of those really special games that come once in a lifetime. It is the some of the best the PS2 has to offer.
