The good, the bad and the ugly on God of War for the PS2.
2) Graphics: Obviously the PS2 has limits like any console system but GoW defiantly pushed the PS2 to the edge. The graphics are very good especially in the cut scenes.
3) Gameplay: The learning curve for a veteran gamer is not difficult and for the beginner you may need a couple of hours to get the hang of the combat. Aside from some lousy camera angle moments that happen in every action adventure game the game plays very smooth.
4) Sound: Great soundtrack for this game. The music during the game is great and changes based on where you are at. Underwater making out with one of Poseidon's daughters you'll know it just by listening to the music! And it's good music!
5) You get to make out with the God of the Ocean's daughters. And you get to sleep with chicks on a giant boat. Always a bonus.
6) Challenge: This was a very well put together game in regards to the challenge. There are a few parts in the game where I was cursing (i.e. the giant spiked pillars you climb to get out of...nm!). The game presented many difficult puzzles and fights. And the fighting it self is fun. Rarely does it seem tedious or redundant. There are moments where it does feel like that but they are very few.
7) Behind the scenes: You get a behind the scenes look at the making of God of War which is awesome. I loved every moment of the bosun footage and you know what? It was free! You don't have to buy the collectors edition as so many companies are doing now to rip us off of another buck or ten.
The bad: ~I'm not an English major so I don't write the best looking reviews but I do Q&A professionally and I always find something wrong with even the best of works.
1) Enemies: I have a problem seeing the same enemy undead soldiers inside Athens that apparently serve Ares that I see inside temples that are built for other gods far far away in areas no mortal has been in in ages if ever. ** Spoiler ** Ares' soldiers appear inside the desert temple. That's not Ares' temple and his soldiers should not be in it. The developers should have made new nasties for this instead of reusing the same old ones you saw earlier in the game. It annoyed me considerably.
2)Logical issues: After you enter the desert and enter the "temple" (i'll do my best not to give away bits of story) you can get to some places that haven't had visitors in a long long time. Yet, you see fresh corpses all over the place and you even see DEEP inside the temple spartan soldiers fighting monsters. What ?! They can't fend off some skeleton in armor but they can make it this deep inside this temple??? No. There are parts in this temple where things burst out of rock and things that are permanently changed so obviously you're the first to accomplish this task yet you find fresh corpses shortly after. Tsk tsk SCEA.
The Ugly: 1) There is one moment in...the temple of Hades I believe where you are hanging by your hands from a rope that's suspended in the air and as you go across you kick enemies out of your way. Well, I fell into the fire but did not die, just laid there. I eventually had to reload from the last saved part.
2) Fell through the ground a couple times in the game as well in one part of the game I'll not mention so I don't ruin story lines. Other than 2 very minor bugs that you may not even encounter this game was put together very well.
I haven't had this much fun playing a game on my PS2 in a long time. I play lots of games that I enjoy a great deal but it has been quite some time since I "HAD" to play a game. God of War is one of those MUST finish games as quickly as possible. The look, feel, sound, everything about the game is high-end and much praise goes to SCEA for this one. And truth be told I do not enjoy the Action Adventure genre of gaming so this is truly a game you should look at.
God of War is an instant classic.
