God of War is just one of those great games that comes once every few years...
You cannot find a game more polished than God of War. The graphics are amazing for the now ageing PS2. The environments look spectacular as well as the lead character model, but it is the audio that takes the cake. The background score, the grunts of hero and monsters, and the song of the sirens... everything sounds just like it should.
This is also one of the few games around today without a camera issue. Rarely does it happen that you don’t have the best perspective of the action. A special mention to the scene where you’re avoiding 15 ft high flaming balls while opening doors. 'Amazing' just does not do justice.
To top it off the combat is quite challenging. After the Devil May Cry series this has been one of the few games to employ a good combat control scheme. The foes themselves vary in difficulty and kinds. Certain types, like the Medusa(s), Minotaur(s) can be killed in cinematic style after you have reduced their life/hp by punching in a series of buttons or rapid punching of a single button.... this makes for a good diversion, not to mention they look really cool. Along the way the same monsters appear again and again... only more buffed up signified by their cosmetic makeovers. The power of the Gods also comes into play thus lending a strategic aspect to the combat like:
1. Freeze em then break em
2. Hit em then lightning fry em
3. Take out the big freaking sword n just bang em up
This is also one of the best games to employ puzzles... yup... it leaves most all survival horror games in the dust. Every little puzzle you do is part of a bigger picture. This is never more apparent than in Pandora's temple. Every little puzzle not only gets the job at hand done but at the end of it, all the little puzzles complete a much larger puzzle.... its like doing a 500 piece puzzle with each piece being a rubrics cube.
At the end of the game you have the choice of playing through it again at the unlocked difficulty setting which ramps it up quite a notch. The game's default difficulty itself can prove to be quite challenging.
At the end of the day... if you consider yourself a gaming buff you owe yourself to play God of War.
