This was a game that for a while tickled my curiosity, and after playing for just 10 mins was hooked for three days.
The game is set in ancient Greece where you take control of a warrior named Kratos the last hope for the survival of Olympus. Kratos was once a general of the greek army who was feared throughout the land. However on one occasion Kratos' army was beaten and he pleaded to the god of war himself Aries to save him from his enemies in exchange of his life. Aries hears his call and disposes of Kratos' enemies in...well.. a pleasant way?? Kratos becomes Aries' mortal assasin, and instead of attaching a ball and chain to his foot to show this, Aries chains two huge blades to Kratos' wrists which are known as the blades of choas. For ten years Kratos serves Aries doing his bidding and in the process murders his wife and child which haunts Kratos' constantly. Kratos appeals to the gods to take away his nightmares, and in reply the gods tell Kratos they will forgive his sins if he kills Aries. You then begin your quest to defeat the god of war himself.
So basically you havn't really started playing yet and already your hooked with anticipation. What i like about this game is the way it dosn't give you some lame tutorial level to start you off. It throws you in at the deep end and chucks about 30 enemies at you, so when you start get ready to let them blades fly. The fighting in this game is great and dosn't really get repetative at all. This is because as you go through the game your constantly upgrading your weapons by collecting red orbs, which in turn makes your weapons more powerful and gives you more combos. As for the weapons, there is a great selection on offer. The gods give you a helping hand by giving you a magical weapon similar to their own power as you progress. You have a magic meter on screen which you fill up by collecting the blue orbs.
These are the magic weapons you collect on your quest through the game.
Poseidon's Rage: This is a multiple enemy attack which does some serious damage. When you fire it you hammer the circle button to cause maximum hits. The visuals are just amazing.
Medusa's Gaze: Prove worthy enough to harness the power of Madusa by erm... oh yeah.. killing Madusa and pulling of her head. When you use this weapon, Kratos holds out the head in front of him and the beam fires out. As you level this weapon up you will have the ability to do a 360 degree blast and freeze everything around you (very handy in a tight spot).
Zeus' Fury: Alows you to fire lightning bolts at enemies from distance, and when you level it up you can perform a charged shot.
Army of Hades: If you have alot of enemies around you just use this and the souls from the underworld will arise to your aid. Its a bit like the dead souls in Lord of the Rings, sooo cool.
And i've saved this one till last cause i think its just awesome. Once you get the Blade of Artemis get ready to dish out some serious carnage, and when you get it to the maximum level it becomes a masacure. This has to be one of the most devastating weapons i've ever seen in any game, ever.
The graphics in this game are just beautiful, and the landscapes and level design are just breathtaking. The artwork behind the characters and scenery are very impressive, you can tell that when they recruited for this project only the best were selected. The concepts of the game are just brought to life and it just looks so real, i actually felt that these creatures were dying. Blood shoots all over the place in a fashion which reminds me of Kill Bill: Vol 1 which can't be anything but very good now can it? Only this time we have colour. It just looks so impressive watching Kratos pull off these fantastic moves at just the press of a button.
The controls are very user friendly and are very easy to pick up and play. You can pull off the most impressive combos at just the press of three buttons. The camera is fixed, but don't let that put you off at all because it is very well done in sort of like a movie style, which just make the game even more stylish.
It wouldn't feel as real though if it wasn't backed up by the very impressive music score and sound effects. You know when the actions going to begin as the tempo increases and your pulse begins to go into hyperdrive at the aticipation of beheading a minotaur. It really makes alot of difference to the quality of a game when the sounds are of an exceptional level, it sets the mood for which the designers what to create and really makes you gei into it.
So ok your locked, stocked and ready to roll, but it's not just the fancy aray of weapons and interesting storyline that makes this game supurb, oh no. The breathtaking graphics and the fluid gameplay certainly are worthy reasons too, but still arn't the main reasons why either. The main reason why this game is different from the rest and is just unbelievable is because it takes hold of you and draws you in like samara does in the ring. Like i said earlier the game does an impressive job of making it feel real. When you've just battled a minotaur and perform the finish move by bashing the circle button and then watch Katos as he rams the blades of chaos into its throat.
The sheer thrill to play this game and the way it is soooooo addictive is the reason why this game is superb and you must add it to your colection.
If i had to say one way they could of improved it would be a co-op mode, but to be honest i don't care cause i think this game as i said on my classification, totally ROCKS!!!
