Best action game ever made!
The game starts, you see Kratos. Better love his look (damn is he ever brutal looking) cause you'll be spending alot of time alongside Kratos as he is the character you'll play as. The game starts, you see Kratos standing on a ledge saying the Gods have abandonned him. He lets himself fall off the highest cliff there is in Olympus..and bam..there it goes. You don't know more than this when you start the game. I could certainly give out the story, but the way the story is told, telling you more details would totally and entirely spoil the game in its entirety. Anyway you didn't come here for the story, did you? Cause if so, you'll be disapointed as I won't say shit bout the story. You start the game not knowing shit so why should I tell people who haven't played it all the story that unfolds as you play the game? Anyway, that's as far as I'll go story side.
You have two blades (formely known as The Blades of Chaos) chained to your arms. You can swing em around, stab, twirl and what not. In all basics, your primary goal is to destroy and rip apart every enemy (or even any human standing in the way) you cross path with. Sure sometimes you don't need to do so to advance further, but they do give Red Orbs (experience points) to upgrade your different weapons and magics. There's also certain rooms (alot of em) where every exit is blocked by some sort of wall and to be able to proceed further you'll eventually need to kill every enemies..so as well kill everyone while your at it even if you don't need to. The game controls fairly well and is very simple to understand when it comes to congtrols and fights. You use the left analog stick to move your character, right analog to evade (roll away), the D-Pad is for changing through your magics and the square, triangle, x and circle buttons are to perform attacks. You can create combos and accumulate different kind of attacks and special attacks by upgrading your weapons. The game is very linear, you basicaly get from point A to point B for the entire game. Sounds boring? Belive me, there will be enough to tentalise your brain with splatters of blood throughout the stages. The overall difficulty isn't that bad, you can choose between the Mortal Mode (easy), Hero Mode (normal), Spartan Mode (hard) and if you beat the game on any of these difficulties, you unlock God Mode (extremly **** hard), along with another type of gameplay called Challenge of the Gods.
Now that the way to proceed is put down, let's talk about the fights a little bit.. ou can alsh enemies, stab em, poke em or even grab em. When you grab the enemies, that is when you truely see the brutality this game holds. Grabbing an enemy and ripping its body apart, pulling its head off, stabbing him to death, doing some crazy acrobatics to stab em deep and give em a pretty bloody death makes me feel like a serial killer totally emotionless. I love this game for that. That's what actions game should be. There are very few bosses, but they are all worthy of the Gods. For the bosses (and specific enemies later in the game) you will need to engage a mini-game (you don't really have to..but it deals a hell lot of damage to them and makes the fights fairly even) when a big O appears above the enemies head. You press O to engage the mini-game fight thing where you either have to press buttons as they pop up on screen or move the left analog stick the direction they show you to. You like button mashing? If you're going to get this game, I hope you do cause your circle button might be broke after playing God of War. For all the rest of the fights, it's really just a matter of spreading the blood of any creature in your way. Gotta say though, the fights taking place in the "mini-games" are quite amazing to see and quite exciting.
The game looks good. It looks amazing. The graphics are beautiful and you can clearly distinguished everything on its own. A Gorgon is a Gorgon, and an undead soldier is an undead soldier. None of the enemies are really alike and I really enjoyed this. Do I ever hate it when a game is filled with creatures that all look the same xept they get bigger as the game gets further. So far everything's good in this game. The environments are well chosen and add alot to the atmosphere of the game. Taking place in ancient greece, going through a sandtsormin desert searching for sorceress, solving puzzles in big ass ancient temples, evading the traps all while enemies attack you. Everything is very distinguishable and beautiful to the eye, specially with the blood splatters and skulls lying here and there. It never gets tiring to play this game despite being linear because of the different environments that keeps changing. Wait till you see Pandora's Temple..who would of thought a temple could stand there! I ain't going to spoil it fellas! I just enjoy teasing you.
The music is absolutly marvellous. I truely love it. It adds to the tension of the game, it just fits perfectly. It fits the theme of the game, the places, the kind of creatures, it really adds to the game. Though I never really got the time to concentrate on the music cause I was more concentrated onto how many enemies will I ever need to defeat again, It didn't annoy me once. It just felt part of the game in perfect chemistry. Sound effects are there too and are in perfect chemistry as well. I liek the voice overs, they seem to have chosen the good people to do it. Its just..all good!
Now, you might want to replay this game a couple of times. The game contains many unlockable features. It contains a complete Making of God of War, secret infos to be unlocked, videos commenting on all the art concepts, creatures concepts, stages concepts and even deleted stages and 3D models of every enemies that was scrapped. On top of that, you can unlock Challenge of the Gods which consist of 10 challenges given to you by the Gods to pass. Let me tell you this ain't easy at all, but then you can unlock stuff by beating all 10 challenges. You can unlock extra costumes as well and other stuff I have forgotten. Basicaly, this game has alot more to offer to compensate for the short gameplay (around 10hours on your first playthrough without any guides) but this doesn't bother me to start with since back in the days there weren't a single game going for over 5 hours..hence why they didn't need ways to save your game. Don't worry though! You can save your game in God of War, not to be mistaken. So therefore, you will play whichever Mode you want, unlock God Mode, and then you'll eventually want to play God Mode to unlock the rest of the extras.
So I found this review to be simple and direct. Didn't think it would end up with that many lines actually. To say I had no idea what to tell bout this game when I started writting the Review Deck. God of War is a must own for every type of gamers (excluding those who dislike violence and gore) but I wouldn't myself reccomend it for kids. I know the debate lately bout games being too violent and I agree that parents should monitor what they kids play to a certain extent. In other words, don't buy a M rated game to your 10 years old kid. God of War contains extreme violence and gore, alot of blood a hell lot of it and sexual themes (not that I am against it, but I really don't want to spoil the "sexual" aspect of the game cause that's just the shit Really not reccomended for people who are easily offended by those kind of things or any young kids gaming out there. But for any mature gamer, any gamer needing some big action time to let the killer inside has his share at life, get this game right now. You won't regret it.
Simple, Bloody, Short but golden hours of play, beautiful, this game is a must Own on my list. The only reason I ain't giving it a complete 10 is for the lack of bosses. More bosses would of made this game a complete masterpiece.
