This is a review of the God Mode setting in God of War. I thought this would be more helpful than writing a general review – if you want one of those check out the other 1200 player reviews on gamespot.

First the obvious: god mode is tough. This isn’t for the soft hearted, or the easily angered. The demons are relentless and your energy drops faster than Kratos from the cliffs.

Before you attempt God Mode resign yourself to this one undeniable fact: you are going to die, lots. Luckily the game is designed so that you won’t have to start very far back from where you died.

Though, the difficulty and dying does make the game tedious. Some sections took me close to an hour to beat. I just played it over and over again trying to figure out the best mode of attack, so I could finally beat the level. Then I would have to do it again at the next stage. I loved the challenge, but I did resent the repetitiveness.

One strategy I adopted was to utilize the glitches in the game. For example, in the room where you fight the Wraiths for the first time, there is a spot in the corner of the room (where all the pots are) where nobody will attack you. You can stand there and everyone will just hover around you. With this spot, you can wait for a good opportunity, attack, and then return to your “safety spot.”

You can do the same with doorways. If you go to the opening of a doorway, like at the bottom of stairs or the entrance of a room, the demons won’t leave the room they are in and you can attack them while they stand at the entrance. This may sound cheap, but it is an effective strategy, especially when your energy is low.

My one big complaint is about the glitches at the end of the game. If you are playing God Mode, you obviously beat the game once already. So it’s no surprise when I say the final battle has three stages. Well, I found a serious glitch. At the beginning of the second stage, when I pressed start the game froze completely. I had to reset the game and restart the first battle.

This also happens if you press start after you beat Ares for the third time. When I got control of Kratos, I pressed start to see my new weapon, and the game froze. I was so mad. (It took me 2 hours to beat all three stages. Again, I kept dying until I learned a proper strategy.) I hadn’t saved the game; I hadn’t even moved Kratos. As a result, I had to complete the three stages again. I was so angry.

I guess the moral of the story is: in God Mode, the glitches are both a gift and a curse from the gods. Now that I think about it, I wonder if the programmers put the glitches in the game on purpose? You know… to further illustrate the power of the gods.
