Is it time for this god to be dethroned, or should we keep worshiping him? Find out in my review.....
Chains of Olympus plays just like all the other God of War games out there. Press a couple of buttons and waaaaaaalaaaaah, you perform a very stylish kill without the hassle, short and simple. You still have some platforming in the game, but as for the puzzle solving elements, they were nowhere to be seen. Or maybe they were so easy that I didn't even notice I was completing a puzzle, hmmmm… the world may never know just like that mystery with the number of licks it takes to reach the center of a tootsie pop. Anyways the combat in the game wasn't necessarily bad, but it did feel recycled. After playing GOW and GOW 2, the combat began to feel repetitive and dull when I played this game. The least they could have done was add a new combat technique or something in Chains of Olympus, but I guess the saying goes "there's no need to fix something that's not broken", does it go like that? I forgot…..oh and the infamous mini game makes it's return as well….you know…..if you want to see some "BOOM BOOM"!!! Hahahaha, I crack myself up.
God of War: Chains of Olympus is a remarkably beautiful game from top to bottom, at least in terms of a PSP game. The level design was nicely laid out, and the pacing of the actual levels was superb. The character models looked exceptional as always, but on the creative side there was something missing. The "epic" scale within the graphical design was sadly missing. In God of War, you got to climb an enormous temple that was chained on top of the titan Cronos (I think my jaw broke off when I first saw that), that image continues to resonate in my head even today. In God of War 2, you got to climb on the inside of a 50 ft living statue and tear it all down (now that's what I call epic). Chains of Olympus didn't really have any awe-inspiring moments, but the game is still beautiful.
Just like all God of War games out there, the musical score was outstanding, and the voice acting was top-notch as well. Hearing the screams of your victims was also a nice bonus, hehehehe. You know….if you're into that.
Overall: Chains of Olympus is probably the best purchase anyone could make out there for the PSP, and I can easily say that with my hand placed upon a stack of Game Informer magazines. If you own a PSP, have some money to burn, and are craving for blood, uhhhh I mean virtual blood, then go grab your copy today or Kratos will hunt you down and make you into chop suey.
