Oh. My. God.
First of all, this is the game that really shows off what the PSP can do - and it's about bloody time. Yes, there have been some excellent titles on the system (Loco, Patapon, Tekken, WipeOut) but none have looked this saliva inducing, for something so small to produce something so graphically intense, it is genuinely incredible.
I meen, you may have heard the phrase "looks almost as good as a PS2 game" chucked about when some talk about some PSP titles, but in fact GOW PSP looks better than some PS2 and genuinely on par with God of War 1 on PS2, it's retina melting and truly stunning.
However, looks can come with a slight cost, like Michael Jackson and his nose, some times God of War does "drop off". The frame rate slogs big time sometimes when a lot is happening on screen, and normally that is quite frequently. It occasionally chudders down to the speed of a Lyons Golden Syrup, which doesn't affect the gameplay much but it is a big blow to what is essentially an almost perfect title.
The gameplay though is spot on. It works perfectly on the portable and the analogue stick doesn't irritate me as much as I thought it would, because lets face it that nub is a pain in the arse. Moving is easy and never grows too uncomfortable and as annoying as it sounds, rolling and dodging is mapped to L+R and the nub and soon become second nature.
Attacks still feel extremely brutal and are lavishly gorey in keeping with everything God of War, though not as intense on the small screen as compared to it's Big Brother, Chains of Olympus never fails to thrill. Though its on a smaller console, there is still big set pieces, big kills and massively detailed environaments - it is a true spectacle.
Overall, it's a game that doesn't disappoint, it's eccstacy of invigorating excitement is bloody astonishing but is slightly dampened by the wet flannel that is a chugging frame rate and if you're being incredibly picky, yes, some of the gameplay is recycled and may be old for veteran players. However, everything has translated incredibly well from PS2 to PSP and is an incredibly satisfying purchase for anybody who owns a PSP and is a definite contender for PSP Game of the Year.
