The 2010 remake does a great job at capturing the brilliance of the old game however it does fall short at some parts.
When one thinks of a modern FPS shooter one does not usually think "Oh I'll get it for the Wii" well this is exactly the point. This Goldeneye is not meant to be a modern FPS of the likes of Call of Duty or Battlefield, or any other the other many FPS games saturating the market today. To me, the impression I get from this Goldeneye is it's a shrine devoted to the awesomeness of the original and it is just there to entertain.
When I play this new Goldeneye I get the impression that the makers at Eurocom were massive fans of the original game and they knew the responsibility and difficulty involved in remaking that classic. I think what they have done is very clever and successful. They have updated the game in every way but still keep the iconic moments that keep it Goldeneye. For example; This new Goldneye is all about modern Bond so it has Daniel Craig as Bond, Judi Dench as M and the other MI6 guy called Tanner makes is 'appearence'. They have changed the look of the other characters such as Orumov, Xenia and Natalya. This is all very good because everything is changed in such a way that you don't know whats coming but when it happens it gives you that nostalgia feeling like "ohh yeah it was like this before.. but its slightly different." Most of the time the slight changes they make are as good as what happenes in the classic film but some, however, are really dissapointing and you feel a bit let down.
So into the main part of the game... the.. well.... game. The control system is fantastic and top marks for Eurocoms ingenuity. First of all using the motion controller and nunchuck is pretty good and you can customise it into a way that suits you but for me I loved using the classic Gamecube controller, It is fully compatable and feels great. The game gives you a 'lock-on' feature which allows your aim to lock onto on an ememy so that you can kill him very quickly. To be honest this system is a bit ridiculous because you can lock on when your aim is miles away so it takes away from the challenge somewhat but nevertheless, I still like this feature as I think it gives the game a cool fast paced, Bond style feel. The graphics are also very good for the Wii.
However this game has its annoyances. First of all the voice overs are just a shade above terrible and the soundtrack is forgettable. This really takes away from being fully immersed into the game and I think this is a big area where it lets us down. The missions are pretty much the same throughout teh game and after the first 10 minutes you've seen everythign the enemies have to offer. There is only 1 driving mission and only 1 boss fight which isn't handled by a quick-time event and even that is laughable. While watchnig a 'cut-scene' you might be tempted to put your controller down for a break but beware because alot of cutscenes have quick-time events in and they are some of the worst quick time events you've ever
seen and if you miss them - you're a dead man and you have to watch it all again! Also we have the standard poorly developed stealth aspect which consists of sneaking until you are caught, and then killing every single enemy before carrying on. I hate that!
Also coming in at around only 5 hours of story missions it falls a bit short and I think they are realying on you making the most of the time trials and multiplayer events, but for me that is no
excuse, 5 hours is just too short. The offline multiplayer is good but again I am dissapointed. Unlike nightfire you don't have AI bots. You do get a large array of characters and weapons and modes but I think Nightfire is a better multiplayer experience and this offline multiplayer will get boring fast.
The online Multiplayer is actually quite good if you are into that sort of thing and you might spend a few hours on that.
Putting things into consideration it is a great game that gives you a nostalgic feeling when playing it so i'm giving it 8/10. It lacks in some crucial areas but there is no doubt that this new Goldeneye is a lot of fun and I would highly reccomend playing it.
