Goldeneye Possibly the greatest FPS?

User Rating: 9 | GoldenEye 007 N64
Games that are based on movies suck. I don't know anyone in the gaming community who would ever disagree with this--its an unwritten law of videogaming. Sure, I can go off on a tangent about how my rescent playthrough of Pirates of the Carribean had more Evan Stone than Errol Flynn (God I hope you kids understand that), but I believe that it is a little much. I am actually going to go in a different direction and prove myself wrong.

Goldeneye was possibly the greatest first person shooter of all time on a console game (until Halo came along, but that's another story). With a solid singleplayer and adaptive controls, the play was excellent. The use of the Nintendo 64's joystick to move made for precision turns and shooting. The controller was laid out in a configuration that made sense. The "Z" button was for shooting. As a result of this, it is to date the only button I have ever referred to as the "trigger button".

The game's multiplayer was relatively diverse for a game of its time--with several modes of play and tons of weapon selections.

Seriously, I am almost stunned about how excellent of a game this beast is. The first time I picked it up (was it 10 years ago?) I played for hours with my friends. It was fun enough such that we would set the time limit off so that we would continue to play into infinity. In what other game cound you do this and not get bored?

The game is great for its time, graphically. Enemies are clearly discernable from the environment. Of course, you get the typical "fade-in" of trees and buildings (as you walk closer to them they magically appear) that is common for games of this time period, but this is not a fatal problem.

The game is just plain fun--and a defining moment in the history of the FPS.

I gave this game 9/10. It is an excellent game--there's a reason it is ranked as the 4th best Nintendo 64 game.
