Goldeneye is simply the best console FPS ever. It just did the whole shooter experience right and paved the way for the metal of honors and halos of today. In fact, I'll contend that if the N64 controller had 2 joysticks, Goldeneye would play very similarly to how Halo plays today. the graphics and sound for the time, especially on the N64 were amazing. There were also little suttleties (like shooting the solders hats off) to the game that just made the whole experience right. also, It's use of objectives is what some might contend to be a shooter first. up until that point, most shooters like doom, and duke nukem3D had you finding keys, opening doors, and simply fighting to survive. Goldeneye had the same thing, except you not only had to fight to survive, you also had to protect the girl, not kill any civilians, stop something from blowing up etc. Multi-player was also a big factor. Hours and hours of my youth were spent killing my friends in death-matches which were also done just right.
the game, even after 10 years still just feels right.
If you're a shooter fan, and you haven't played Goldeneye, you owe it to yourself. nuff said.
