Lack of damage modelling really sticks out

User Rating: 7.5 | Gran Turismo 4 PS2
OK, first, just assume that everthing regarding this game is simply outstanding, and I will get down to the two major gripes, and add a third. 1. The tracks are not necessarily very 'readable'. In driving games, a very tricky part of designing tracks is to make sure there is enough visual information for the driver to predict the road ahead as they do in real life. This can be hard because while you can simulate perspective, you cannot truly reproduce human visual depth perception and speed sensation 100% in a video game. In Gran Turismo, more than any other driving game, it seems that there are parts of tracks where you have so little cuing that you wind up driving into walls because there just isnt the information there to clue you into your current momentum and the road ahead. Call it realism, thats fine, but there are definitely parts of this game that do not pretend in any way to be realistic (see next item), so if they are going to go with lack of realism, please lend it towards fun gameplay as well by making the tracks a little more readable. 2. Zero damage modelling. If there is anything more annoying then crashing into walls head on consistantly because of #1, it is that absolutely nothing happens to your car whatsoever and you continue to drive. This is even more annoying for the multiplayer behind you who navigated the corner just fine, only to see that your head-on did not apply much penalty to his mishap beyond bringing his car to a stop temporarily. 3. Locked items. I pick up games, I play them, I come back a month later - I really dont care about campaigns and unlocking crap. If I bought the game, I want to play any track and/or car at any time from the moment I unwrap it. This is one of those weird console things that I never get used to. My friend came over, we wanted to play rally, but there was only one rally track available. Im 35, I dont want to search for cheat codes on the internet or whatever just because a friend came over and we wanted to play a videogame and I hadnt spent 10 hours unlocking tracks in single player.
