Indy driving, old school style!

This game is more of a "see what your best time can be" game rather than a racing game. You focus on your car (with pretty impressive graphics considering the age) as your progress side scrolls left to right. Actually, except for up and down, your car does not move, the scenery and other cars move around you. There are four modes of play, each with different track lengths, and a couple with tunnels that you go through during the course of your race. "Race" is a term that should be used loosely when describing Grand Prix, however. There is no ranking, you don't see where you are in relation to other cars, and you will get to the finish line no matter what. Like I said above, it is all about your time. Despite the fact that it's not really a racing game, however, it is a lot of fun. You can get the car moving pretty fast, and the graphics are good. You can see your tires actually rotate, and when you smack into another car the screen lights up with impressive sound effects. And watch out for the various oil stains that can make you slip and slow you down. These things were very impressive for those of us (like me) that had this when it originally came out in the early 1980s. Modern gamers may not get it, but older gamers will love it. It is a must in your Atari collection.
